Hey jwhop- I absolutely agree with you. The left never seems to under stand nor support the Military. Instead, they want to cut it down to nothing and leave us vulnerable.

AG- Oops.. I read the wrong name and was thinking about Rumsfield....As far as Cheney, yes he did cut the Military budget and personnel- at a time when we were not at war nor getting attacked as we did under Clinton. He also reviewed the budget carefully and cut out programs that were voted in to purchase equipment that was not needed. That is quite different than cutting out programs geared towards Soldiers and Families while we are at war. Not to mention trying to push out higher ranking Soldiers to save money.

*** I should also add that under Cheney the number of Military personnel fell from 2.2 Million to 1.8 Million. Right now the Military is only at 1.4 Million.

As to Rumsfield- The BRAC decision, as far as cuts, has good and bad points. We did close many bases in Germany that were under manned and underfunded. We turned them back over to the Germans which has led to strong ties between the US Military and the German Military. However, we lost billions by upgrading those bases right before turning them over.

Some of the bases / posts in the US needed to be closed as we moved to a more consolidated Military. Yes, it did hurt the economy in some areas where they depended on the Military, sadly though, those same towns were not supportive of the US Military (here and abroad). In Germany they were downright disrespectful to Americans around Bad Kissingen and Wurzburg. Once we closed those bases and moved the Soldiers the same rude people were crying that we killed their economy.

Here in AZ there was talk about closing Fort Huachuca but due to the fact that it is the Military Intelligence HQ and also trains troops from various branches (as well as aids in the UAV training for law enforcement / border patrol) they kept it open. Oh, and the wonderful people in this county also rallied congress and the DoD to keep it open.

Base closings and realignment are important when we are losing tons of money to keep them open when they are undermanned. It just makes sense to move things around in order to be more financially sound.
