With the advent of the Internet, communication at the speed of light, vast libraries crammed full of historical documents and commentaries, all of which are capable of laying bare the history of the 20th Century; one would reasonably believe no one who values liberty would have anything whatsoever to do with "Progressives".

Even the name(s) by which they call themselves are a lie.

They call themselves "intellectuals" but when you see and hear what they write and say, you realize there's a vast wasteland between their ears.

They call themselves Liberals but they're not "liberal".

They call themselves Democrats but there's nothing democratic in their actions.

They call themselves Progressives but they take their marching orders straight out of the ass of Karl Marx and Engels who wrote the Communist Manifesto in the mid 19th Century. That's not "progressive". That's backward looking and "regressive".

So now, we have a new crop of "Progressives" who have lied their way into political office; just as Franklin Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson lied their way into office; Woodrow Wilson with the help of fellow "Progressive" Theodore Roosevelt.

What is the number one lesson history teaches about "Progressives"?

After lying their way into political offices, "Progressives" rapidly lay waste to the nation's economy.

Woodrow Wilson's economic policies caused the depression of 1920...the one you never heard of.

Franklin Roosevelt's economic policies, along with those of Herbert Hoover deepened a normal business cycle recession into the "Great Depression" and prolonged it for the better part of 8 years.

Now, we have another "Progressive" in the White House and more "Progressives" in the Congress, not to mention the other "Progressives" appointed by O'Bomber to high level positions in the White House and government.

And what are these "Progressives" doing?

They have turned another normal business cycle recession into a near "depression". They've attempted to nationalize the private sector and bring private enterprise under government control and management. They've come close to destroying the value of the US Dollar and bond rating companies are warning the AAA Bond Rating enjoyed by the US..since almost forever...may have to be downgraded.

Ludwig von Mises..1881-1973, would have recognized these "Progressives" immediately. He saw the history of "Progressives" unfold with the "Progressive" administrations of Woodrow Wilson and Franklin Roosevelt and lived through the damage they caused to America.

"Mises wrote, "...the educated strata are more gullible than the less educated. The most enthusiastic supporters of Marxism, Nazism, and Fascism were the intellectuals, not the boors." Indeed, Marx, Lenin, et al., were intellectuals, and the leaders of socialism have been relatively well-to-do educated folks like Bill Ayers, not salt-of-the-earth blue-collar folks."

Mises continued this insight with a penetrating passage that is uncannily relevant today:

"The champions of socialism call themselves progressives, but they recommend a system which is characterized by rigid observance of routine and by a resistance to every kind of improvement. They call themselves liberals, but they are intent upon abolishing liberty. They call themselves democrats, but they yearn for dictatorship. They call themselves revolutionaries, but they want to make the government omnipotent. They promise the blessings of the Garden of Eden, but they plan to transform the world into a gigantic post office."

Yes, Ludwig von Mises had seen it all before and would have recognized the current crop of "Progressives" immediately and the damage they are doing to the United States.

In their minds, they are legends of intellectual thought, the elite.

But, in the real world where the rubber meets the road, they are an intellectual wasteland and they don't measure up to even "normal" in any way.

So, what of those who spout Marxist, Leninist, Maoist, "Progressive" Socialist drivel; the "useful idiots", as Lenin dubbed them?

Is it possible they believe that by spouting drivel some of the so called "intellectual elitism" will rub off on them; and they will be recognized as "Progressive" too?

Kind of reminds me of a line from the song "Manana"

"My brother took his suitcase and he went away to school

My father said he only learned to be a silly fool"

What's your beef with Theodore Roosevelt? He did create the national park system...of course it was cause he liked to hunt, however it is nice to go and visit them.

Seriously though, I'm interested in hearing what your dislike is.

Please, with a nice Martini on top?

Now I've been in some very nice post offices, and the people who work there, are quite pleasant. The one here in Ames, has some lovely murals painted on the walls. One could get hungry after a while though, stamps are not very filling, and the paste, ick, such a bad taste in your mouth.

PS ~ I'll add a Cuban Cigar too!

My beef with Theodore Roosevelt is that...

1. He was a Progressive who started the practice of grabbing land for the federal government..without any Constitutional authority whatsoever. Read the US Constitution...then read the 9th and 10th Amendments.

This map details the percentage of state territory owned by the federal government. The top 10 list of states with the highest percentage of federally owned land looks like this:

1.Nevada 84.5%
2.Alaska 69.1%
3.Utah 57.4%
4.Oregon 53.1%
5.Idaho 50.2%
6.Arizona 48.1%
7.California 45.3%
8.Wyoming 42.3%
9.New Mexico 41.8%
10.Colorado 36.6%

Notable is that all these states are in the West (except Alaska, which strictly speaking is also a western state, albeit northwestern). Also notable is the contrast between the highest and the lowest percentages of federal land ownership. The US government owns a whopping 84.5% of Nevada, but only a puny 0.4% of Rhode Island and Connecticut. The lowest-percentage states are mainly in the East, but some are also in the Midwest and in the South:

1.Connecticut 0.4%
2.Rhode Island 0.4%
3.Iowa 0.8%
4.New York 0.8%
5.Maine 1.1%
6.Kansas 1.2%
7.Nebraska 1.4%
8.Alabama 1.6%
9.Ohio 1.7%
10.Illinois 1.8%

Even the 10th place is still below the two percent mark. One territory is not specified on the map: Washington D.C. It could be argued that this is the only main administrative division of US territory to be fully owned by the federal government. It could, but that would be wrong – and upsetting to those private citizens who own part of the nation’s capital in the form of their real estate. It would be more correct to state that the District of Columbia by default falls under the direct tutelage of the Federal Government.

Yes, parks are nice...great even but for the federal government to set aside vast areas..like 84% of Nevada is absurd in the extreme.

2. Theodore Roosevelt..Progressive, split the vote specifically to get fellow Progressive Woodrow Wilson elected president.

Wilson gave America the Federal Reserve System, Prohibition and the income tax. Woodrow Wilson put about 70,000 American citizens in prison for disagreeing with him...violation of their 1st Amendment rights and lied to America about not entering World War I. Almost immediately after Wilson was elected, America entered the war in Europe.

I've been in some nice post offices too...like the one in Seminole, Florida..with about 10 service windows..with one window open and people lined up all the way back into the "NICE" lobby, waiting to get to the front of the line.

Most of us don't think it's NICE waiting in lines like that....when we can see lots of other postal employees moving in slow motion and apparently consumed with other "work" much more important than waiting on the people who pay their salaries.

Now AD, I'll take that Martini...neither shaken or stirred and make it a Vodka Martini. A Martini glass chilled in the freezer, 2 drops of extra dry Vermouth followed by 2 oz. of Stoli Vodka..you'll find in the freezer..poured into the glass, topped off with 2 extra large green olives.

Oh yeah, and make that cigar a Montecristo Series C Toro.

#1. Ok I'll agree that it wasn't a good idea to start with the Federal Land Grabs, however, I would like to point out, that it had been going on for quite some time, all of those Indian treaties, weren't exactly above board when they got land "removed" from them. Good intentions pave the way to Hades and all that. I do think the park system is a National Treasure, and people come from all over the world to see them. So can we give him the benefit of the doubt, inspite of the grabbing? I do happen to live in one of the lower Fed. park states, Iowa, and my personal opinion that most of the spectacular land happens to be in the Western portion of the country. Who hasn't looked in awe at the Rocky Mountains, or the seemingly endless space of the Grand Canyon?

#2

quote:
split the vote specifically

Have you read up on this? I've not heard that, however, I'm a product of the public school system of the 80's so, they might have left that out by the time I got there. I don't remember reading about it in college either, though it may have slipped my mind.

I'll agree with you on the Fed. That was naughty. Prohibition didn't work then, and it still doesn't work. Waste of money and time, IMO. The income tax...I know it's not constitutional, though doesn't a majority of our taxes go for the defense section of the budget?

#3 Post Offices. Maybe on the day you were there, there was a horrible postal emergency, and most of the employees were working to clean up the toxic ink spill, or preventing the packages from escaping It's hard work defending yourself from hostile postal packages you know!

Now I'd like a nice micro-brewed stout please

I think the federal parks are national treasures too.

I just don't think grabbing off half or more of the lands in the West contributes to "national parks" or their enjoyment.

I also don't think most of the lands taken from native Americans were turned into national parks. They were mostly opened for settlement...as settlers moved west.

Theodore Roosevelt had been a Republican President. It would be a mistake to believe Roosevelt didn't run on the "Bull Moose" party ticket to do anything other than split the Republican vote and elect Woodrow Wilson. Much as Ross Perot ran as an independent, split the Republican vote and got Bill Clinton elected in 1992.

The majority of the federal budget is devoted to non discretionary social welfare programs...about 60% of the total.

The defense and security related budget for 2010 is about 20% of the total budget and is considered "discretionary" spending.

"Toxic ink spills" is a problem the US Postal Service is going to have to get on top of...pronto.

So we can agree then, that Teddy Roosevelt needs to be spanked for having sour grapes about the whole nominating process...

We should write up a proposal for the toxic ink spills problem of the US Postal service. Maybe Congress could get busy volunteering, as they aren't too busy anyhow.

I'm not convinced Roosevelt wanted to be nominated or elected president again. I think he wanted fellow "Progressive" Woodrow Wilson elected and split the Republican vote to make it happen.

I wouldn't drop a suggestion about Post Office toxic ink spills in the suggestion box just yet AD . That might trigger a visit from Homeland Security and the FBI. In fact, they're probably reading this right now and checking IP addresses.

I'm going to have to put on my tinfoil hat now. Do you have yours handy? I will mail you one if you don't. GASP...The Post Office! I see it all now, it's a HUGE conspiracy to make sure the Postal employees have more free time!!! Diabolical That must have been the reason there was only one window open at your post office!

I see what you mean but I think protection afforded by tinfoil hats is only a rumor started by THEM.

Notice, this poor citizen resister and seeker of the truth put on her tinfoil hat and and it lead THEM right to her.

Well, I don't want to mess with the Postal Police. Those guys play rough. They can come out to your place, remove your mailbox, shut your mail off, put your name into their computers with a delete error code which links to all the government data bases AND Poof, you're wiped and disappear like you never existed.

You might have to let your imagination run wild to really tick off the Post Office Police.

You could protest in front of your main Post Office with a sign saying..."DOWN WITH SNAIL MAIL"

Or, a sign saying..."DANGER, POST OFFICES USE TOXIC INK"

Or, a sign saying..."PEPPER SPRAY POSTAL WORKERS...NOT MAN'S BEST FRIENDS"

Or, a sign saying..."US POSTAL WORKERS=GOVERNMENT PAID LOAFERS"

Or, a sign saying..."US POSTAL STAMPS ARE TOXIC TO HUMAN HEALTH"

Or, you could find a vacant lot in your city; then find the address of every branch post office in your city AND put in changes of addresses for all those branch post offices redirecting THEIR mail to the vacant lot. Just be sure to mount a mail box at the curb with the correct address of the vacant lot.

Any of those actions is sure to pi$$ off the Post Office Police exceedingly and perhaps get you wiped.

I agree with AD katatonic.

Just appoint yourself "Supervisor of Mail Sorting Operations" and when you sign those changes of addresses; be sure to use your new title.

You do sort your own mail don't you katatonic?....some to the trash can, some to the bill stack, some to be read immediately and some to various files.

OK, on the US Postal Service...

Hey katatonic,

the Post Office Police might not only wipe you but they can also condemn your property.

lucky for me i don't have any property then! in fact i am apparently already incognito without trying since i received no census form despite recent change of address docs... my local po is famous for losing things. i don't think they need my help!

funny though, an old schoolmate/artist who moved to new mexico to paint also worked for the post office for 25 years and now is "retired" on a handsome pension which i admit to envying her, but not at the price she paid...25 years in the p.o. yeuchh!!

Yes, somewhere there must be a pile of "lost mail" tall enough to reach the Moon.

I wonder if lost socks and underwear go to the same place as lost mail?

Perhaps this stuff gets shuffled off into an alternate universe. I can see the startled look on the face of jwhop2 as he opens his sock drawer and finds a single black sock...and jwhop2 doesn't wear black socks.

I'm often startled myself when one of my socks disappears somewhere between the clothes hamper and the dryer.
