A California man was arrested and charged today with making telephone threats last month against Washington Rep. Jim McDermott.
Per NBC's Pete Williams, federal officials say Charles Haberman of Palm Springs, Calif., left two threatening phone messages at the Democratic congressman's Seattle office in early December. Haberman was upset about McDermott's votes against extending the so-called Bush tax cuts last month.
In a profanity-filled message, Haberman warned that if McDermott misspent "my money… I'll kill him. I'll kill his family," according to court documents.
Questioned by the FBI, Haberman said he had been drinking at the time and that he only was "trying to scare them before they spent money that didn't belong to them." According to AP, court documents say Haberman also previously threatened a congresswoman with the initials "C.P." A spokesman for Rep. Chellie Pingree, a Democrat from Maine, declined to comment, citing the ongoing investigation.
It's the second time since this weekend's tragic shootings in Arizona that someone has been arrested and charged with threatening a member of Congress. On Monday, a man was arrested for threatening Colorado Sen. Michael Bennet. But federal prosecutors handling the McDermott case insisted their decision to file charges today had nothing to do with the shooting of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords over the weekend.
