http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2011/02/110223-nuclear-war-winter-global-warming-environment-science-climate-change/ Regional war could spark "unprecedented climate change," experts predict..
Charles Q. Choi for National Geographic News Published February 22, 2011 Even a regional nuclear war could spark "unprecedented" global cooling and reduce rainfall for years, according to U.S. government computer models. Widespread famine and disease would likely follow, experts speculate. During the Cold War a nuclear exchange between superpowers—such as the one feared for years between the United States and the former Soviet Union—was predicted to cause a "nuclear winter." In that scenario hundreds of nuclear explosions spark huge fires, whose smoke, dust, and ash blot out the sun for weeks amid a backdrop of dangerous radiation levels. Much of humanity eventually dies of starvation and disease. Jwhop IP: Logged |

Well, since global warming has already reversed itself, I suggest we skip a regional nuclear war. Then, we can permit Algore to declare victory in the man made global warming war, throw all of O'Bomber's energy Cap and Tax plans in the trashcan, forgo O'Bomber's plans for $6 per gallon gas, drill baby drill for our own energy...and get America rolling again. lalalinda

Gore will never do that, Jwhop. His company sells carbon credits. ------------------ "Never mentally imagine for another that which you would not want to experience for yourself, since the mental image you send out inevitably comes back to you." Rebecca Clark IP: Logged |

hahaha, I see your point Randall! Maybe we could turn Algore on to a Fuller Brush route...or Tupperware. Hell, anything useful would be a step in the right direction. IP: Logged |

"Atomic Bomb and the Weather One of the rumors of the atomic bomb was that it had the ability to change weather patterns, and how the patterns work. This rumor started to spread after the New Mexico atomic bombing test. People thought that violent thunderstorms could be created and that the atomic bomb had the ability to create or destroy a hurricane, or create heat or cold waves (Holzman 1). However, the day that the atomic bomb was tested there was a lot of rain and gusts of wind that occurred on that day. The scientists thought that it was a miracle that the test bomb was not struck by a bolt of lightening, if that had happened the all the efforts of the Manhattan project would have blown up in one huge flash. For storms to be formed there must be updrafts from the lowest to the highest of atmospheric levels, the moving of these updrafts form fronts, which travel over mountains. An atomic bomb however, releases its energy at once, heating the air and traveling through the atmosphere like a “bubble.” The condensed nuclei do not have the ability to form rain clouds and cannot form precipitation. Further proof that the atomic bomb does not have the ability to change the weather patterns is that a common warm front with a summer shower produces the energy rate of “at least three atomic bombs per second” (Holzman 2). The violent storm that Hiroshima experienced the night after the atomic bomb dropped was actually caused by the flash fires that broke out. Two hours after the fires broke out it began to rain. Similar events have been observed over large rainforests (Holzman 2). "IP: Logged |

We are not talking about controlling the weather, i.e. lightning or rain. We are referring to a nuclear winter, which is pure science.IP: Logged |

i realize that. the excerpt mentions that some attributed the rains to the bomb but that was erroneous.i was just wondering if there were any noticeable changes in japans weather after TWO atomic bombs in short succession, don't remember hearing anything about it and can't find anything online either. the quote was the closest i could find! but it does seem that the storm caused by the fires is part of the typical projected scenario, the fires causing smoke and ash that blot out the sun, or in this case provoked a massive storm... Yes, water vapor in the atmosphere condense on dust particles until it's heavy enough to fall out of the sky as rain.So katatonic...thermonuclear holocaust; are you for it..or against it?

Seems like a nuclear winter would fulfill two of the extreme far left's agendas--reverse so-called global warming and thin out the population.------------------ "Never mentally imagine for another that which you would not want to experience for yourself, since the mental image you send out inevitably comes back to you." yes and it seems like nuclear winter could transpire due to natural disasters like this week in japan. one more reason to dump nuclear power altogether let alone for military purposes!IP: Logged |

Actually, the more polluting the economy is, the more Gore gets to sell carbon credits. Gore wins. Economy wins. Bankers get fat paychecks. Common guy on the street gets shafted as usual. And then we can start securitizing the carbon credits and sell them like CDOs, get the rating agencies to rate them AAA, while we create new federal agency jobs to regulate carbon credits. Sounds like a good bargain for Gore, Washington and the bankers. Strange bedfellows indeed. IP: Logged |

The "nuclear winter" has arrived, in China, where the air is too thick to breathe and crops are failing due to poor light and polluted water...from fossil fuels, not nukes. The glorious prospect of unregulated industry. IP: Logged |

Both China and India protest vehemently about the Western interference with regard to environmental concerns. Those nations firmly believe that they have a right to develop their economies and that the West is a bunch of hypocrites for prohibiting their economic development after attaining developed status. India is particularly fond of pointining out that the developing economies of China and India produce ***much less*** carbon emissions ***per capital*** than the Western world, and it is the West that should curb its carbon emissions through increased regulation in favor of less regulation on emissions in the developing world.IP: Logged |

That's not a nuclear winter. That's just smog. quote: Originally posted by Catalina: The "nuclear winter" has arrived, in China, where the air is too thick to breathe and crops are failing due to poor light and polluted water...from fossil fuels, not nukes. The glorious prospect of unregulated industry.

Isn't that basically what nuclear winter is/was? On a massive scale...anyway the effect is the same...we don't need nukes to kill ourselves, just unregulated (unfettered) business IP: Logged |

No, because it is not as severe as a "real"(projected) nuclear winter ... it just shows you don't need global freezing to cripple crops and kill people, just a lot of coal, oil and smog.IP: Logged |

Oh dear and all along the man made global warming twits have been telling us that burning fossil fuels...oil and coal is what causes global warming. Now you come along and say burning fossil fuels causes global cooling. You leftists need to get your stories straight. IP: Logged |
