The Obama administration plans to suspend or cancel hundreds of millions of dollars in aid to Pakistan, amid concerns over whether that money is being well spent in the fight against militant groups inside the country's borders. White House Chief of Staff Bill Daley confirmed Sunday that about $800 million in U.S. military aid to Pakistan could now be in jeopardy, saying that while the U.S.-Pakistan relationship has not "failed" the two countries have a lot to work out. http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2011/07/10/us-reportedly-looking-to-suspend-millions-in-military-aid-to-pakistan/ Jwhop IP: Logged |

While I see the dichotomy the US has had in keeping Pakistan an ally, I quite glad to see the funding stop... if indeed it does. quote: Defense Secretary Leon Panetta nevertheless urged the public not to jump to conclusions about Pakistan with regard to bin Laden.
Hmmmm, sure sounds like they have a few conclusions if they are pulling funding. Knocking off their own journalist and booting more than 100 Special Forces trainers out of the country didn`t help their case either.

I think we ALL would agree on this. Interesting how Mehmood Durrani says: quote: It would be damaging to the relationship if Washington held back on these funds, said Pakistan's former ambassador to the United States, retired major-general Mehmood Durrani said, reflecting a widespread view in Pakistan that it was fighting America's war, and Washington must pay for it.
yet the article goes on to say: quote: Pakistan says it is doing all it can to fight militants, including a deadly militancy at home which has left thousands dead.

Pakistan's ex-president criticizes loss of US aid By MICHAEL GRACZYK - Associated Press | AP – 10 hrs ago HOUSTON (AP) — Former Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf said Monday that the Obama administration's suspension of $800 million in U.S. aid to the Pakistani military is not in the interest of either nation and could hamper anti-terrorism efforts.
"For two years, I can for sure, with 100 While Americans were angered at the possibility Pakistan was providing bin Laden cover, Pakistanis were enraged over what they saw as American violation of their sovereignty in the raid on bin Laden.
On Sunday, Daley acknowledged much the same, saying the decision to suspend military aid resulted from the increasing estrangement between the U.S. and its sometimes unreliable partner in the fight against terrorism. "Obviously there's still a lot of pain that the political system in Pakistan is feeling by virtue of the raid that we did to get Osama bin Laden," Daley said. The U.S. long has been unhappy with Pakistan's evident lack of enthusiasm for carrying the fight against terrorists to its tribal areas, as well as its covert support for the Taliban and anti-Indian extremist groups. A senior U.S. official has confirmed the aid suspension came in response to the Pakistani army's decision to significantly reduce the number of visas for U.S. military trainers. http://news.yahoo.com/pakistans-ex-president-criticizes-loss-us-aid-011124876.html Ten years is a long time and their sovereignty had been considered so I have no sympathy for their outcrys now.

Let's not forget Pakistan has more than a hundred nuclear weapons and missiles on which to mount and deliver them. The government of Pakistan is under increasing pressure from Taliban and al-Qaeda members who are attempting to overthrow the government. Could I see a show of hands from those who have no problem with the Taliban and/or al-Qaeda winding up in control of a government which has nuclear weapons? lalalinda IP: Logged | |
