Opponents of the the National Defense Authorization Act are celebrating after a judge ruled that the act is unconstitutional. District Judge Katherine Forrest favored a group of activists and journalists who claimed section 1021 could have Americans indefinitely detained without due process only on suspicion of having terrorist ties. For now, the NDAA is blocked and the US government has the option to appeal the ruling. David Seaman, journalist and host of The DL Show, joins us with his take on the ruling.Very informative video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c9V-eFXaV8k&feature=youtu.be IP: Logged |

obama signed this bill because, being passed by almost every vote in the house and senate, vetoing it would mean little, and hold up the basic reason for the bill, BUDGETTING FOR THE MILITARY, including feeding them and paying their wages...however in february, at the last minute he had to do so (when it couldn't be argued over and stall the military budget etc) he attached a rider to it saying it COULD NOT bestow unconsitutional powers on the military, the president, or anyone else (as in arrest and imprisonment without due course)... but NOW apparently there are tons of folk in congress who are saying this ACT they voted in - with a landslide - should be challenged. i am glad it is being challenged, though i think the rider stands as confirmation that detention without due course is NOT extended to americans..but i wonder what the dickens these congresspeople are playing at? amelia, i don't know whether he is a good guy weaving his way through an environment that treats him as a puppet, or a true puppet, or maybe even just a human being? but i reject the view that he is a radical commie white-hating foreigner completely. he is a man who THINKS about his experiences, and i understand a lot of his thoughts as expressed. for one, anyone who doesn't understand the pull in two directions experienced by a half-white man with brown skin, who is treated by most whites as a "black" man...will find his comments about unconscious white racism hard to understand. i happen to have a half-black grandson, you would be surprised at the assumptions people VOICE when they see him and his extremely white mother together on the street. that is just one tiny ingredient as an example. he is a politican, and as i said in november 08, i don't really trust politicians, nor anyone who WANTS to be president. however i am appalled at the shadows projected on this man. the NDAA was almost UNAMIMOUSLY passed. a presidential veto in such a case would have just underlined lack of power, not a good image to project when people look to you as a leader. i would love to see it repealed or amended but a lot more people need to signal that desire before congress will vote against itself! for instance, amelia, i do not buy pictures of obama reading a bestseller by a well-known american author as proof that he is in support of his "fellow muslim's" ideas...i argue more for obama here than i would elsewhere simply because there is so much knee-jerk rush-quoting and focussing on bashing ONE man - and there is so much more to the picture than that. when i talk with friends who think he's an outright genius or even that he's doing a great job, i express more reservations. i seek the truth, which usually lies somewhere in the middle of extremist poles..
