"In the general election, this effect was comparatively minor," he concludes. But in areas with high racial search rates, the fact that Obama is African American worked against him, sometimes significantly.

and the pundits push this fear for all it's worth. he's not "one of us", he's muslim, he's this, that, socialist...anything but out and say he friggin ain't white and that's scary/not allowable.

I think the race issue is NOT a factor Kat, unless people want to USE it to unnerve other people and throw race at people to make them shut up. If most people don't like O'Bomber, it is because he stinks as a president. If race was a factor, he would NOT have been elected.

just because people say they are not racist when asked doesn't mean they aren't, and radism is not really a logical issue is it?

That will, always, exist, to some degree, while we are on the earth. If one is a minority, one must make peace with that fact. One can only be the best person one can be, so as to change individual hearts, with one's own actions.

Society wise, the fact that the US elected a black man shows a great deal. I am proud of that fact. However, for people to bring up race, now, is a CHEAP use of the whole issue as O'Bomber is not disliked on race. He is disliked on character,maturity and wisdom, on which he has precious little!

Two comments:

• The writer does not really define, in a concrete way, just exactly the criteria for "racially tinged".
  That might be splitting hairs. Most of us hoped that with the election of Obama, racism might be on the decline.
  Not true. What I have seen happening is racism broadening to include Latinos/Latinas, Afghanis, Pakistanis...essentially peoples with more pigment. That sounds facetious. But what I see, and hear, is hate/rage/disgust focused on peeps with a darker skin tone across the board. Are all caucasians, deep down, white supremacists? Unfortunately I think there is some truth in that statement.

• I am not surprised that the extended Appalachia's pocket of WV-Eastern OH- etc is supposedly pointy white hat central for racism. I am surprised that of the 10 states with the fewest racially charged searches Utah, New Mexico, Montana, and Wyoming were on the list. Maybe more of those people work physically for a living [?] and do not spend all day on a comp.

to call obama a black man is to miss the WHOLE point. there are people with more black blood, and lighter skin, walking around here and elsewhere in the world. what is the difference? entirely skin deep.

one of the scariest things about obama is he doesn't DO "darkie" or "descendant of darkie", does he? his father nor grandfather were never slaves. how dare he hold his head up when some people very loudly prove how much they don't like him and how much the colour of his skin brings up karmic fears of retribution.

generally, every 80 years or so, things get so sewn up and boxed in that we have a major recession like the one we're in, right on schedule as it happens. it takes a bit longer to climb out than your ordinary common recession, and many times war has been the end result, as in the revolution, civil war, world war 2, etc etc etc. is that where you want to see it go?

our government was very thoughtfully organized so NO ONE MAN could ruin everything, run everything, or be responsible for everything, right OR wrong. yet everyone wants to blame obama...why is that?

perhaps if people hadn't been so willing to "get over" systemic hatred in the 30s it might never have happened, and i know that is simplistic, but if we all just lie down and let "hate be everywhere" without a murmur, how are we any better than the germans in the 30s?

i come from jewish and irish catholic stock. both have known the power of hatred. i am shocked that someone who so identifies with judaism would just shrug.

Ami- I could break down the sickness in your "Node-y" reply but there are plenty of smart people who have read your compost
since Sept 2010 and don't need me to point out the obvious. Particularly after you have had a glass of wine or 3.

I do say, with the utmost sincerity, that with the well connected people on this site you might get a therapist referral.
Everyone can benefit from therapy at some point or another in their lives, and you are no exception. Therapy does not carry the
stigma that it once did. What is painfully obvious is that you actually get off on the public humiliation. You cater to
it. Not conducive to mental health. Maybe you have had an issue with one or both of your parents.

Get some therapy.
