I`m certain we all heard about the controversy and it appears people are in one corner or the other. No fence sitting here.
quote: Anger toward the mayor and marathon officials mounted throughout Friday after a New York Post cover depicted two massive generators devoted to powering the press tent in Manhattan, while many citizens on Staten Island and the outer reaches of Queens remained in the dark. Even runners themselves, who had traveled long distances to participate, felt deeply conflicted when they saw long lines for gas on Manhattan streets. The death toll from the storm has increased throughout the week as more bodies have been recovered in houses, and Staten Island officials called the emergency response a "disgrace."
http://sports.yahoo.com/news/new-york-city-marathon-canceled-after-severe-b acklash-from-public.html Should have the 400 known gennys and many port-a-potties, bottled ect. water go to devastated victims of Sandy or be used in the NYC Marathon?
Personally, once the devastation was known, it should have been canceled immediately. Do not pass go... But it`s politics and the dollar talking, right Mayor B? May the healing and recovery be swift and certain. ------------------ We dance around the ring and suppose, but the secret sits in the middle and Knows Robert Frost IP: Logged |

i think, juni, that bloomberg was in a "show must go on" mindset, thinking that anything to lift the emotional vibe of ny would help. i kind of understand that, but as one person said "if one first responder can't be in staten island because of the marathon, it will be a travesty" (paraphrase). so, yeah, definitely right to cancel it. and fairly marie-antoinette to think it would uplift the city. hopefully all the portapotties, water, whatever supplies and personnel that would have been at the marathon should be wending their way to people going without. i am relieved he saw sense! BUT while there is not really anyway to prepare for the demolishment of your home, this storm was well heralded. a radio host i was listening to sunday said his email box was full of people asking what they could do to prepare for it, and his answer was, basically, you're a little late. he has been urging disaster prep for years... most of the people i know either went to stay with relatives or seriously covered the bases before the storm hit. some of them are without power...but they have fires in their fireplaces and ice in their fridges! one woman i know who has been living in one of long island's famed mansions for 50 years no longer has a house. the place was built to last, too. she got it for a song but there will be no replacing it, a relic of the gilded age...which no amount of insurance will bring back. at least she got herself out of there before panic time. as my cousin(in nj) pointed out this is an object lesson in how dependent we are on electronics, fossil fuels, and urban services. time to reset the occupy wall street camp?? I think it should be canceled and people helped instead. That said, I think some people want to continue it as a symbolic expression that their spirit can't be broken and they'll stay the course no matter what. Some people are impressed with that attitude and so allowing the marathon to go on as scheduled is a testament to that. Obviously, I prefer adaptability and helping those who got knocked down first. it's been cancelled. i agree, PJ, about the spirit side of it. but the marathon siphons off power, police, medics, water, etc etc etc, all needed badly by displaced persons who couldn't get into the city if they wanted to! THEIR spirits need TLC and physical comfort.IP: Logged |

I agree and am glad he came to his senses. I do feel sorry for the participants who got rooked by the last minute change. Mayor B likened the marathon to the 9/11 "the show must go on" attitude. That was what, 6 weeks after the devastation of the Twin Towers? Enough time for a miniscule regrouping and no one was cold, hungry , homeless and without... ------------------ We dance around the ring and suppose, but the secret sits in the middle and Knows Robert Frost IP: Logged |

I suspect their spirits will be uplifted when they see the city pulling together to find aid to feed, cloth and offer assistance to their daily existence. Re the stately home . A shame and it is indeed irreplaceable. Such heartbreak on so many levels.------------------ We dance around the ring and suppose, but the secret sits in the middle and Knows Robert Frost IP: Logged |

I'm from New York City so I understand the mindset of wanting to pull through and do things like they've always done. It's the attitude, you know? "Screw you, Sandy! You can't keep NY down!" But, yeah, I'm glad they came to their senses and cancelled or postponed it. Take care of everyone first and then get back to the fun stuff. IP: Logged |
