Barry Goldwater, a once revered conservative, continually warned about the Christian Right trying to hijack the Republican Party. And it turns out he was right. I remember about 10 years ago Jonah Goldberg once dismissed the Christian Right in contempt as a "fringe group" in the Republican base and yet a few weeks ago I read another article by him in which he sounded like one of those people he used to hold in contempt. And of course we saw just how cultish the party got after they won so much ground in 2010, which terrified those of us who don't want to see America become another Iran with a Christian paint job (btw, many in Iran believed the fundies couldn't get that far or last and yet they remain in nightmarish religious tyranny to this day, decades later, and for the first time I saw the possibility of that happening in America after seeing Republicans in action after 2010).

And I know it scared plenty of voters, even some registered Republicans, and I know that had to do with why they lost (not sure how big a factor it was, but definitely a factor). And as Barry Goldwater said while the Christian Right was still a fringe trying to hijack the RP:

"When you say 'radical right' today, I think of these moneymaking ventures by fellows like Pat Robertson and others who are trying to take the Republican party and make a religious organization out of it. If that ever happens, kiss politics goodbye." (from here)

Well said, Mr. Goldwater. If there ever was a Cassandra Award given out I'm sure he'd be nominated for it today.

HOW IRONIC!!!

Mitt Romney got 47% of the full Presidential votes as tallied from ALL 50 states (versus the electoral votes which determine the winner).
http://news.yahoo.com/mitt-romney-got-47-percent-175320929--abc-news-politics.html

"On the same day lawmakers count the electoral votes on Capitol Hill, officially certifying President Obama's victory in the Electoral College, the AP released a tabulation of official presidential votes from all 50 states.

As tabulated by the AP, Romney got 47.2 percent of the full presidential vote.

He did a bit better - 48.0 - if you just look at the two top candidates.

That number - 47 percent - resonates in the context of the race because of Romney's infamous " 47 percent " comments that seemed to have an effect on the race.

In hidden camera video clips, which were posted by Mother Jones, Romney was seen telling Florida telling donors that 47 percent of voters will chose Obama "no matter what" because they are people "who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it. That that's an entitlement. And the government should give it to them. And they will vote for this president no matter what…These are people who pay no income tax."

"My job is not to worry about those people," Romney says in the video. "I'll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives."

Later, in a Fox News interview, he said: "Well, clearly in a campaign, with hundreds if not thousands of speeches and question-and-answer sessions, now and then you're going to say something that doesn't come out right," Romney said. "In this case, I said something that's just completely wrong."

He added: "And I absolutely believe, however, that my life has shown that I care about 100 percent and that's been demonstrated throughout my life. And this whole campaign is about the 100 percent."
