There are possibilities, both good and bad, of course, but overall I just can't worry about it because it's Texas. Those who take advantage of this probably already have one anyway. And chances are that whatever they're giving away is the kind I'd just sell to get a rebate anyway.

And I spent a few months running with criminals in Houston (not far from Oak Forest) and I know they DO make many burglars think twice when they know a home (and plenty of people worth robbing) can be armed, and if the criminal is shot the cops will pat the defender on the back for it (whereas if a criminal shoots someone, especially in the case of death, then it's death row for them when they're caught). Texas outdoes Florida, even vigilantes have gotten off by juries refusing to convict. Heck, recently a guy got off for shooting a prostitute to death for leaving with his money without (so he says) providing him with the illegal service (and therefore had his property and under Texas law you can usually get away with shooting someone for that).

Now if they started a program like that around HERE (Southern California) I'd worry about a bunch of ignoramuses getting hold of them who have no experience with gun handling, storage, and impulse control (and attribute god-like powers to them and thus make them fascinating, even magical, encouraging to walk around like those idiots on TV who hold guns wrong with the attitude, "I have a gun, I'm BIG, bow down to me!"). But I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be allowed out here anyway, however.

here's a link to the
Armed Citizens Project...

PixieJane,
You bring up some very good points!

Ami Anne,
I'm leaning your way on this one!

They do a criminal check.
You get a shotgun and training..

If everyone was armed, would people
ever try to break in?

I don't think our government will
go along with arming all it's citizens..

I live in Manchester, NH
and crime has increased here
so much.
It's scary!

I live in a rural area where one already knows the others are armed. Maybe not with a concealed hand gun but at minimum, a rifle or shot gun.

B&E`s are basically non existent around here. In my lifetime, I can recall one rape case and the last outright murder was 1958.

Perhaps less people means less crime or more armed people means less crime...

Then again, maybe we are just peaceable souls

I hate to be near guns or touch guns but I am an avid supporter of gun rights.

When Hitler disarmed Germans, he told them they would be safe.

If Obama gets your guns, you better know that your last defense against tyranny will be gone

People can laugh and say it is extreme but history repeats itself and those who won't learn it's lessons are doomed to repeat them
