Well Russia hasn't invaded Ukraine. so I don't think Russia is responsible. I am not aware of the whole issue, but from what I understand, the situation is the result of a chunk of the population that wants to get closer to the EU, and wants the négociations that had been started between Ukraine and the EU to carrry on, but they were interrupted by the current president. at least that i what I understand to be the problem. the president is from the other side of the country, from the side that wants to remain close to Russia... therefore a boycott, TO ME, doesn't seem the solution. the fact that the world watches as it unfolds is good enough to give strength to the Ukrainian people to choose for itself I believe.. I don't know.. IP: Logged |

Yes the Ukraine is independent, kind of...but Putin's attitudes towards gays, terrorists (many of whom are really more dissidents than terrorist) and the whole uneasy atmosphere is not encouraging...plus the US is purposeky thumbing their nose @ the gay thing by bringing extra gay power to the party! It seems crazy to me, all of it. IP: Logged |

The terrorism, regardless of the cause , is horrifying and that is what I have been worked up over. Throw in Putins anti human rights stance and it is a train wreck around the corner. The have warned the U.S. team to not wear American gear outside the village. Fear is they would become walking targets How sad when one can`t identify with the country they represent. ------------------ Christian, Jew, Muslim, Shaman, Zoroastrian, stone, ground, mountain, river, each has a secret way of being with the Mystery, unique and not to be judged. I agree with those who wonder why a thug like Putin could have pulled this off. But, then again I think of how politicized the IOC is, and, it really isn't that surprising. I don't condemn Russia/ or Russians themselves. It just seems a travesty of what the 'games' stand for. Maybe I need to keep the shiny side up, and remember how athletes always seem to circumvent the focus back to the purity of sport and athletic completion.Putting the focus on the thug in power gives him more importance than the entire nation. Fear of terrorist activity cannot rule our lives. @ Juni Who are the 'they' that warn of not wearing US emblem age? Walking targets to whom? IP: Logged |

Node, yep, Putin is the thug and like us, the Russian people just pay the piper. The State Dept. and Olympic Committee did the warnings... who is "they" seems unspecified. Olympians Warned About Wearing Team USA Gear in Sochi The U.S. Olympic Committee has cautioned athletes not to wear their USA gear outside official Sochi venues, as the Wall Street Journal first reported today. “This was based on discussions with the State Department,” agency spokeswoman Marie Harf told reporters at today’s daily press briefing. “Just being careful about where you wear U.S. logos or things like that — this isn’t unique to Russia, to be clear. We generally give this kind of guidance around big international events, particularly if there is some kind of threat like we’ve seen here,” Harf said. The senior administration official supported the USOC’s warning. “We’re not sure if they’re actually true or not, or how serious they are, but given those threats [reported in recent weeks], I think it’s reasonable,” the official said, citing experts who have said “soft targets” outside official Olympic venues are more vulnerable to terrorist attacks. The advice was given to athletes “by the security coordinator for the U.S. Olympic team,” the senior administration official said. http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/headlines/2014/01/olympians-warned-about-wearing-team-usa-gear-in-sochi/ or: Warning to U.S. athletes: No Olympic uniform outside Sochi venues Washington (CNN) -- American athletes are being warned not to wear their Olympic uniforms outside of the upcoming Winter Games in Sochi, Russia, where they will be under the watchful eye of U.S. security officials who will attend events with them, State Department officials said Friday. The news about the security steps being taken to safeguard the U.S. Olympic team follow revelations this week that Russian authorities were searching for a wanted terror suspect in and around the vicinity of the upcoming Games. It was just one of what a senior State Department official has described as an "uptick in threat reporting" in the lead-up the Olympics, scheduled for February 7-23. "Our expectation is that we will see more in the coming weeks," the official, speaking on background, told reporters during a briefing on Olympic security measures. http://www.cnn.com/2014/01/24/us/sochi-us-security/index.html

Are they talking about athletes in general, just US athletes, or Americans in Sochi? I would wager Russians and other Europeans will have no trouble identifying Americans whether they wear "colours" or not...if it's just athletes the Olympic comittee are worried about, it doesn't seem too big a concession to act like civilians when in the town. If all Americans are considered at risk low profile would mean pretty severely restricted movement...and cost the community a lot of the "side-effect" profits they are likely looking forward to. Sad situation for all. IP: Logged |

I don`t know about civilians but the warning was specific to athletes. One would "assume" all would be cautious when on the streets. I love the olympics and can`t wait for them to start. ------------------ Christian, Jew, Muslim, Shaman, Zoroastrian, stone, ground, mountain, river, each has a secret way of being with the Mystery, unique and not to be judged. The reports back home about acconmodations sound truly scary! Hotels half-finished, tspwater that looks like it came from West Virginia (!), shambles everywhere, basically...Good thing Russia is so wealthy and no longer Commie-nest, eh? Only a few people have profited from her vast new wealth, you say? It's an oligarchy, you say? How shocking... IP: Logged |

Shambles indeed. News pics showed a bathroom door that was broken down in a hotel room. Seems, when the doors are closed, it locks... with no key to get out. Olympic Bobsledder Johnny Quinn Breaks Down Door After Being Locked In Bathroom : U.S. Olympic bobsledder Johnny Quinn somehow found himself locked in his bathroom in the Sochi Athlete's Village on Saturday morning. What did he do? Well, let's just say he did his best Kool-Aid Man impression and busted through the door like it was wet cardboard. Which, judging by the stories we've heard about shoddy construction in Sochi, it might have been. http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2014/02/08/olympic-bobsledder-breaks-down-door_n_4750933.html ------------------ Christian, Jew, Muslim, Shaman, Zoroastrian, stone, ground, mountain, river, each has a secret way of being with the Mystery, unique and not to be judged.
