Foul-mouthed people are also the most honest, study finds Henry Bodkin 18 January 2017 Gordon Ramsay Gordon Ramsay, known for his swearing, gets his point across Credit: Rex
Temperate language has traditionally been considered a social virtue, but new research suggests that people who refrain from swearing are often the most devious and dishonest. Those fond of effing and blinding, by contrast, are likely to be the most honest in any given group, according to academics at the University of Cambridge. The study describes how 276 participants were asked to list their favourite swear words in order to gauge how fond they were of turning the air blue. They were then given a survey asking them to agree or disagree with statements such as “I never lie” and “all my habits are good” to assess their propensity for dishonesty. The researchers found that the most honest in the group were also the biggest swearers. “At least people who swear are telling you what they really think” Dr David Stillwell Dr David Stillwell, one of the study's authors, said the correlation may stem from the constraints imposed by social convention. “If you’re trying to follow the social norms rather than saying what you think, you are saying what people want to hear,” he said. “In that respect you are not being very honest. “We did not look at extreme dishonesty such as fraud, so from that experiment it’s an open question as to whether there would be a link.” However, he said the findings corroborate research in the US which links states with a high level of swearing to low levels of honesty-related crime. States such as New Jersey, where a lot of people use bad language, were found to rank highly on the State Integrity Index, whereas Utah and other places where bad language is a relative rarity saw higher levels of fraud or similar offences. People who regularly posted short, simple messages on Facebook were the least likely to swear, but also found to be more dishonest “At least people who swear are telling you what they really think,” said Dr Stillwell. “Although if people said what they think all the time, would that really be a good thing?” The researchers also examined the Facebook postings of 75,000 people, where a similar correlation was observed. People who regularly posted short, simple messages were the least likely to swear. Dr Sillwell said simple statements are already known to be associated with dishonesty, because liars find it hard to make up complicated sentences. However, more nuanced language, evidenced by words such as “but” and “however”, as well as use of pronouns which associate the speaker with his or her statement, are commonly agreed to indicate honesty. In the Facebook analysis, people who spoke in this style were also more likely to swear. The study was published in the journal Social Psychological and Personality Science. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/01/18/foul-mouthed-people-also-honest-study-finds/ IP: Logged |

Gordon Ramsay gets away with his temper tantrums because he is a brilliant professional. Exquisitely talented chef with extensive knowledge of everything food wise. He is not a statesman though, in which case his behavior wouldn't be accepted. No one wants to live to see the moment when your idol, Kim Jong Un is called a fat ass by your president (despite the fact that he is and he fully deserves to be called one, in his case). And no one wants this reality in which I can make a Twitter account and manipulate your president to call Kim a fat ass, which I and anyone else can perfectly do. Since I and everyone else knows what POTUS thinks at 3 am in the morning and knows what to say to cause a specific reaction of him. Wake up, man! In all cases, there are limits to what a public person can say, even a brilliant chef, brilliant artist or a celebrity. Think John Galliano. ------------------ I seem to have loved you in numberless forms...

How typical of you...to totally miss the point of the posted article and careen off into the wasteland of PC speech.Let me suggest you lay off the notion you know what diplomats say to each other when the microphones and video cameras are off. Btw, Gordon Ramsey is on the air...because people tune in to watch his show. Is Ramsey a great chef? Who the hell knows. Certainly you don't know...unless you've eaten something prepared BY RAMSEY and neither do I. But. in the 2 or 3 episodes I've seen of Hell's Kitchen, it's obvious Ramsey has clear standards of food prep and communicates clearly...if profanely. Whimpering little snowflakes wouldn't last 5 minutes in Ramsey's kitchen without melting down. IP: Logged |

As it happens, you are right about me not having tasted Ramsay yet, however watching, reading and trying his recipes and how he conducts them, and by this alone, I admire him profusely as a chef and I know he is a great chef. But I don't have to testify for him, the world has already honored him as a great chef. Ramsay is not just Hell's Kitchen, but dozens of restaurants worldwide and 16 stars, I don't have to give him the Michelin myself.Apart from that, your aspiration for malice, violence and vulgarity can't be hidden at this point. As for the rest of your message, it shows a refusal to face a reality that causes legitimate panic worldwide, which is astounding. You give the impression of someone who forces himself really hard to believe something that it just is not there, sorry.
Ignoring the devastating unprecedented reality to know and condition POTUS mind and behavior live? "Sad!" (this potus actually reads, retweets and deletes the tweets for him and about him from random people, on a daily basis, with a highly predictable pattern) Don't tempt me Joking aside, I am sure this experiment is already happening. ------------------ I seem to have loved you in numberless forms... Oh I get your article, don't worry, it's posted as an attempt for you to entertain your illusion that Donald Trump is an honest guy because vulgarity is refreshing. Not working Donald Trump is not an honest guy and vulgarity + violence are not refreshing. Plus, Donald Trump is not a "guy" and the US will never accept to be Hell's Kitchen. Jwhop, I am merely pointing out the fact that someone with a loose mouth and temper is both easy to control and unpredictable, hence unfit for some positions. ------------------ I seem to have loved you in numberless forms... Let's drink a smoothie (with some vodka, huh? vodka is trendy) for actual real men, not this model. There are internet jokes that go like this: "everyone, let's tweet on a daily basis to DJT: Mr President Trump, you are our hero for realizing the shortcomings in Obamacare yet being able to keep it, we are counting on you, no one could make such a smart move but you" etc. On the other hand, of course, others are most likely using this opportunity for other games. ------------------ I seem to have loved you in numberless forms... Ahahaha vulgarity is honesty? this move to save face failed miserably. On the other hand, I don't know if you just want to write long post or if you can't remember what you posted 3 seconds ago because you tend to randomly repeat phrases many times. This phrase quote: “At least people who swear are telling you what they really think,” said Dr Stillwell.
and this quote: People who regularly posted short, simple messages were the least likely to swear.
are repeated twice with only 3 to 5 phrases in between. Are you afraid writing short post would make you sound dishonest little Jwhop? sorry to say but this dragging an otherwise short content into long post just shows incompetency. Trying to read your post hurts.

hard to believe it's a grown-up behavior, let alone a POTUS. I wonder if his brain cells for feeling embarrassment are dead. IP: Logged |

Yes, may be in the "Corrupted by wall street" USA of donald Trump and his billionaire secretaries, life will be hard for genuine heartful people. But here, your president, and the brexit, will give the room, AND THE NECESSITY, for the EU to strenghten and affirm its own social model. YOUR anglo-saxon model with sub prime and co, and the 1% cheering to the population who voted them in and believed the promises made by a supposedly billionaire who loves attention and kissing his reflection in the mirror will never be an attractive model ANYWHERE in the world. Just wait to see the sad impact Trump will have on the image, on the credibilty, on the leadership of the USA overseas. IP: Logged | |
