My father served his whole life in the military. I remember his collection of guns (and everything associated with gun ownership). I remember my father leaving the house to go up the road as guardsman to hold Peace in the nearby city that was besieged by destructive race-riots. Scary times-- my dad seemed to always disappear during times of emergencies!!
He was a marksman who had exceptional eyesight, and won medals/awards in national contests for his expertise on two types of rifles.
He tried to get me interested, but (maybe strangely), I was in no-way attracted to it at all... (I tried).
I heard an interesting exchange about a very GOOD reason that our Founders wanted to preserve the rights to free-speech #1 (and by extension, freedom of the press), and for the right to bear arms #2.
#1 was to protect ourselves against those making and enforcing laws, holding power-over, who want to quash or silence any voiced "opposition" -- could be to abuses, or for information-held that is key to fair representation.
#2 protects ourselves against those who would harm-- including, those who build armed-groups, armies, and organized rogue (crazed) individuals, who stockpile weapons/bullets, serious high-volume weapons for mass-murders, in order to perform "the will" of someone they wished strategically-placed into position of Sole Authority and Power-- in order to subjugate "our" nation to his(their) advantage, will and desires-- ultimately forming a single dictator-ruled government.
This is still considered a young and "experimental form" of government, which at its core is supposed to be OF the People, and FOR the People--- ALL of the People.
Through following the rule of law, and the carefully wisely designed Constitution, proposals must agree to be submitted to the slow winnowing-and-sifting of its EQUAL branches and systems, to ensure safety of "Checks and Balance" of power.
God Bless, Preserve, and Keep Safe OUR Nation.
