Ancient civilisations had access to many powerful plants/drugs. They built the pyramids at Giza, Machu Picchu, Gobekli Tepi, etc, with techologies that we still don't understand.I think the difference is that our ancestors had respect for plants/drugs and they were mainly used for the purposes of problem-solving through changing their perception of things, but they were also used for relaxation, balancing the mind, body and spirit and connecting to their ancestors through spiritual ritual.
Nowadays, addicts are living lives that they want to escape from. People who end up addicted to a drug, usually have different motives from our ancestors and the shame that goes along with drug use is basically a gun loaded by the law and trigger pulled by the law-abiding society.
Shame and ****** living conditions are bigger problems than addiction and are part of the addiction cycle.
I support decriminalisation, but without improving social conditions first, I think it is a risk.
