Yes, I think the government should guarantee that everyone has some form of catastrophic healthcare. And everyone already has! I don't know anywhere in the US where an hospital will turn away or deny lifesaving care to someone who is injured in a car accident because they don't have insurance. More chronic diseases like cancer will be covered by medicare or medicaid if the person cannot afford care. I don't know anyone who is not receiving the cancer care they need. It might take a while and some social worker has to help with the papers, but all the people I know that have had cancer for the past 10-15 years are getting or did get medical care for their cancer, and they did not pay for their care out of their pocket.

I do believe that healthcare should not be left in the hands of for profit corporations. The economic imperatives of making a profit off people's health are unfortunately not good, as we have seen in the past, so this is where I think government's responsibility is best.HOWEVER, we should hold the government's performance in high standard, and not let it become a bloated bureaucracy, full of civil servants who are just punching their time clocks and doing the bare minimum while dreaming of easy retirements on the public dole. Also no government is going to give you health. You give yourself health by living a healthy lifestyle, eating healthy food most of the time and working out to keep your weight down. The idea that you are going to live your life willy nilly, eat whatever you want, smoke, drink, engage in risky sex all you want and expect the healthcare system to keep you healthy has got to stop! And this policy is due to President Reagan. Oh, the horror! IP: Logged |
