For example, if you ever wrote a story involving Star Trek characters then that's fanfic. Some even gets published while others were printed up and traded among fans (before the internet). Fans used to make some books about Kirk & Spock of Star Trek being lovers which was marked as "K/S" (Kirk/Spock) on the written work (I think this goes back to the 1970s before the internet was commonly used) and as a result same sex pairings are often called "slash" (for the slash between K/S), though some who are uncomfortable with male pairings will look for "femslash" to make sure it's a female pairing. Heterosexual pairings (and increasingly homosexual ones as well) are known as "ships" which is short for "relationship." Many like to say there's subtext in the series (what's hinted at and implied, often consciously but knowing it would never get past the censors if the writers were more open about it, such as between Xena & Gabrielle in Xena for a long while) and that it's at least somewhat tied to "canon" (that is, true to the spirit and story of the show). When a pairing is WTF (especially if a crossover, such as say Harry Potter and Sabrina Spellman) then it's called a "crack ship" (that is you had to be smoking crack to come up with that one). (There's also the "crack fic" which is a story concept one had to be on crack to come up with, though some of these are challenges made by someone else who tries to make it work...I've made fics like those, something so insane that someone else wanted to see and I had to make it, not because it was easy, but because it was hard.) And some fans get really passionate about their ships (they really, really want them to happen, their OTP, or One True Ship), or about the ships others come up with which just messes up the entire series for them and therefore offends them...and thus the shipping wars.
