Charlie, just because this disease is scary doesn't mean an isolated case will transform Sweden into an outbreak zone. You should probably be more worried of catching a local variant of hemorragic fever such as Nephropathia epidemica (sorkfeber or myyräkuume) which is spread by rodents in Scandinavia. We actually lost a family member to this disease about 30 years ago, so the danger, though minimal, is real. With Ebola the risk should be much smaller. Right now a confirmed Ebola case is being treated in my city, and I even know some of the doctors at that hospital. They know exactly what precautions to take, as the disease is not unknown, and the patient will have a much better chance of recovery here than in the country where he got infected. Therefore, I am not worried for the safety of our city in the slightest. If you want to see what usually happens in the Western health care systems in an outbreak scenario, consider the example of the Marburg Virus (a relative of Ebola) which was named after the town where the first big outbreak took place in 1967. One of the doctors who worked to save the infected patients back then was my academic mentor. Much later, he once gave a vivid description of his experience: "First the animals died, them the animal caretakers, and finally some nurses got infected. Once we realized we were dealing with a lethal and unknown virus, every doctor in the hospital who still had a few vacation days left took leave immediately. I didn't have this option so I stayed. We worked with protective clothing and did what we could for the patients, but they mostly died under our hands. When we performed autopsies to see what had killed them there was severe necrosis almost everywhere. We had to put the bodies in zinc coffins to prevent the virus from spreading." The man who told me this lived for several more decades afterwards, by the way, despite being so closely involved in the outbreak, and the Marburg outbreak itself was contained very quickly even though they initially didn't even know what they were dealing with. Containing such a virus in some of the poorest countries of the world is a different matter altogether. For these regions I am very worried. IP: Logged |

^ lolololol, good to know. I feel so much better now. But on a serious note, I am extremely disappointed (but not surprised) with how the CDC is handling this. We need to impose restrictions on who can fly into the country (judge away) because all it takes is one person lying to set off a fire. TSA trying to act like they aren't part of the problem- they never ask enough or don't bother to ask the right questions which was proven by the doctor Ami mentioned above. IP: Logged |

TSA is a joke. A lot of the incidents they actually stopped were already in progress before they intervened. I suppose it's possible they prevented something or other by not letting it get that far, but I doubt it. The experiments (such as this one) testing their security have shown them to be incompetent and I can believe it as I had a friend who crossed the nation through several airports and back only to empty her purse upon her return to find live ammunition in her purse that she hadn't realized was in it! Lucky for her that several TSA checkpoints didn't catch it either.IP: Logged |

The whole thing is a joke and leads to the one thing that rules our sad sad world, M O N E Y! It's sad how naive the public is and believes every darn thing that their tv says. People need to educate themselves thoroughly. It's main purpose is to take focus off of the more important things going on. I mean come on look at the coincidental timing. We haven't even heard of this crap until what a few months ago? If it isn't killing millions then no need to be fearful! IP: Logged |

First of all, Jane. These people cough in public places and the material can spread up to 3 feet. Picture sitting in a restaurant. Is that touching their bodily fluids? You should listen to Gil Mobley. You can get him on U tube. He is a microbiologist. ------------------ Want To Ask Any Question About Bible Prophecy? Go For it. This sums up why I'm not worried about it: http://www.cracked.com/quick-fixes/why-americans-need-to-calm-f234025-down-about-ebola/ Even more relevant for the US is page 2: htt p://www.cracked.com/quick-fixes/why-americans-need-to-calm-f234025-down-about-ebola_p2/?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=fanpage&utm_campaign=new+article&wa_ibsrc=fanpage Yeah, it's done in a humorous way but check out the many links, they go to real articles, the CDC website, etc. For a very brief summary for those who can't be bothered to read that and the links then it's how you'd have to go out of your way to get it (and even then you might fail) with its spread extremely slow, the media (and many others) profit from keeping you glued to the screen in fear, the panic is far worse than the disease itself (such as false reports pinging when 1 case is found, feelings of doom people have as the media hits them with this over and over, and also a reminder of the SARS panic), Ebola can be easily contained by a country with modern health care system and money that the countries its bad in lack (and such a virus has never been known to mutate as it did in the movie Outbreak), and Ebola is the last one you should be worried about when the flu kills tens of thousands of Americans every year (while Ebola has killed about 5,000 in the world since Star Wars came out in the 70s) and there are even people today still catching bubonic plague (and notice how much worse the plague is in Africa than the US). However, if you CAN read "the end is nigh" articles without end but still can't read something like that just skip this entire thing. Don't worry, when this scare blows over another will eventually pick up and then the process will repeat. (Well technically, sooner or later, the people saying the sky is falling WILL be right COINCIDENTALLY but that could be anywhere between next month and next century or so.) IP: Logged |

You are very unlikely to contract this disease much as natural news is trying to scare you all. Since Texans seem incapable of rational behavior I suggest the state be quarantined till further notice. As IF... pity Perry refused expanded medicaid and the concomitant funding. They appear woefully underequipped and undereducated. IP: Logged |

^^That reminded me of something...one, this seems a popular sentiment in many parts of Texas (even in the dry counties): And so when you mentioned both Texas and Ebola like that I just remembered this: IP: Logged |
