As a rule of thumb, not where vulnerable people can be affected but should have a right to be (government building, public transport, etc), or where it's dangerous (gas stations). But people are rarely okay with common sense. They want everyone to be like them (while saying "be yourself, as long as it's like me"). I recall one club with 2 buildings that solved the argument--or tried to--by making one that allowed smoking, and the other that didn't. But people are drekheads. People insisted on smoking in the non-smoking one while non-smokers still complained one allowed smoking despite having their own club to go to. Compromise and tolerance (given today's world, I feel it's necessary to point out tolerance has to be mutual, not the "tolerance for me, but not for thee" that is commonplace today, which isn't genuine tolerance) was unacceptable. The Other had to be dominated. I think deep down it's tribal. And that deep down, people are fascists who want only those like them in power and the rest gone or at least stepped upon. (Even the early democracies were nothing like today, often practicing slavery of outsiders, and so on.) That line of thought seems more in line with the Spider Line forum. IP: Logged |
