ps. Pixel, I K-Now you can do it! The question really is when? Best of Luck...

sesame~ The time is now. I am ready. But it is hard. Today it has been okay though.
I Posted inPhilly's thread in free-for-all, with my name in the title, and explained sort of what Eleanore said.. about the habits. TOTALLY!!! That is the problem I am having.. but it is a challenge.. and I am facing it. I have been changing and preparing these last few weeks... talking myself into it, altering my habits.. getting tea instead of coffee, walking different ways, putting off that cigarette... thinking of what I could do instead. It has been a progression. I am definately ready.
Thank you for your words, everyone.

*I will have to watch the video another time, I am afraid.. I am not ready to see that yet.*

I just followed a link to a video diary of a woman attempting to quit smoking:
http://www.maryquits.com/skins/maryquits/home.aspx?bhcp=1

I'm saving it for my mother, should she ever decide to try again (she managed years ago, then started again) and thought it might interest pixie or others. I checked out the first couple of day's video, and it shows her smoking, just a warning ~ it's her prep time (the first seven days). She also has a written journal on there, along with "tips of the day". I couldn't get the journal to show at first; try clicking the right hand side of the box and it should appear.

Best of luck

I struggle with this as well. It affects my running horribly though! I can run miles and miles, only I wheeze a little which is really embarassing!

Why is it that all the most beautiful, witty, charming, interesting, people are smokers? Yeah I'm in that nasty boat myself. What kills me is the knee-jerk reaction of wanting one, like when I started reading this string I hadn't had one for a while but instantly wanted one, couldn't find my pack or my lighter, went running around desperately trying to find them for 10 minutes (my bartender girlfriend noticed how whenever a non-smoking ad came up on TV every smoker there would light up simultaneously!) Or how one day I'd been out for hours (practically licking the astrays!) Finally made it to the store, got home, got busy, later noticed it had been 3 hours + I'd never even opened that pack! Something about the reassurance they were there!!

Addiction is certainly a nasty, strange beast!!! well at least it's got me thinking!!

Hey Pixie: Theres a lot of posts here so I don't know if anyone has mentioned this technique, BUT you are on the right track with changing your habits.

According to my fancy schmancy behavior modification teacher, the best way to stop smoking is to cut out the cues that cause you to smoke, coffee etc. She claims that cold turkey is impossible and that the most effective strategy is to quit cold turkey in ONE setting, and then maintain quitting there.

Just don't smoke in the car, or don't smoke when you have coffee, or dont' smoke after 10 pm. Set a small goal for yourself and stick to it! If you can succeed in one small area you may be able to succeed in another area.

Another great strategy is public posting of resulsts. Keep a big poster in the living room or kitchen where your family and guests can all see your progress. Document how far you've come, and also when you mess up! The public commitment will keep you earnest!

A final tactic is to make a behavioral contract with your husband. A behavior contract can be unilateral or bilateral.
A unilateral contract will make it so that if you stop smoking for 1 day, or in 1 area, you will get a reward. A bilateral contract will be more like, if I don't smoke my husband will do something I want him to do. If you do the unilateral one, your husband has to be your contract manager, to enforce the reward of you not smoking. You could also do punishments (ie no nookie for you) for messing up. Make sure that the punishments and rewards are contigent, that is they are quickly and consistently applied after you mess up/succeed.

This sounds like a lot but these three techniques have shown to be very statistically successful, good luck!=)
