When an old man died in the geriatric ward of a nursing home in an Australian country town, it was believed that he had nothing left of any value.😞
Later, when the nurses were going through his meager possessions, They found this poem. Its quality and content so impressed the staff that copies were made and distributed to every nurse in the hospital.
💙
One nurse took her copy to Melbourne. The old man's sole bequest to posterity has since appeared in the Christmas editions of magazines around the country and appearing in mags for Mental Health. A slide presentation has also been made based on his simple, but eloquent, poem.
💙
And this old man, with nothing left to give to the world, is now the author of this 'anonymous' poem winging across the Internet.
💙
quote:
Cranky Old Man

What do you see nurses? . . .. . .What do you see?
What are you thinking .. . when you're looking at me?
A cranky old man, . . . . . .not very wise,
Uncertain of habit .. . . . . . . .. with faraway eyes?
Who dribbles his food .. . ... . . and makes no reply.
When you say in a loud voice . .'I do wish you'd try!'
Who seems not to notice . . .the things that you do.
And forever is losing . . . . . .. . . A sock or shoe?
Who, resisting or not . . . ... lets you do as you will,
With bathing and feeding . . . .The long day to fill?
Is that what you're thinking?. .Is that what you see?
Then open your eyes, nurse .you're not looking at me.
I'll tell you who I am . . . . .. As I sit here so still,
As I do at your bidding, .. . . . as I eat at your will.
I'm a small child of Ten . .with a father and mother,
Brothers and sisters .. . . .. . who love one another
A young boy of Sixteen . . . .. with wings on his feet
Dreaming that soon now . . .. . . a lover he'll meet.
A groom soon at Twenty . . . ..my heart gives a leap.
Remembering, the vows .. .. .that I promised to keep.
At Twenty-Five, now . . . . .I have young of my own.
Who need me to guide . . . And a secure happy home.
A man of Thirty . .. . . . . My young now grown fast,
Bound to each other . . .. With ties that should last.
At Forty, my young sons .. .have grown and are gone,
But my woman is beside me . . to see I don't mourn.
At Fifty, once more, .. ...Babies play 'round my knee,
Again, we know children . . . . My loved one and me.
Dark days are upon me . . . . My wife is now dead.
I look at the future ... . . . . I shudder with dread.
For my young are all rearing .. . . young of their own.
And I think of the years . . . And the love that I've known.
I'm now an old man . . . . . . .. and nature is cruel.
It's jest to make old age . . . . . . . look like a fool.
The body, it crumbles .. .. . grace and vigour, depart.
There is now a stone . . . where I once had a heart.
But inside this old carcass . A young man still dwells,
And now and again . . . . . my battered heart swells
I remember the joys . . . . .. . I remember the pain.
And I'm loving and living . . . . . . . life over again.
I think of the years, all too few . . .. gone too fast.
And accept the stark fact . . . that nothing can last.
So open your eyes, people .. . . . .. . . open and see.
Not a cranky old man .
Look closer . . . . see .. .. . .. .... . ME!!

Edit to add💙
I feel much as the cranky old man.
Without a serious miracle my time is running out.😞
Please be kind to old folks💙
I can say that because I am an old cranky person too.
Not everyone is lucky enough to agree gracefully.
To often the pain agony and despair drag us
screaming then limping to an existence that
Is just a waiting for the clock to run out.
I hope reincarnation is real.
One of my old signature lines bespeaks of such a reality.💕😎

therefore I am immortal

Value your health your lives and be kind to
Suffering folks who are on a way that is not always their own doing.
Life and death are the same coin of being human.

Yeah I feel like the cranky old man😢
People do not like communicating
with gravely ill folks
especially when it may be terminal😢👽
Being so disabled since 1989
and now
fighting for my life
because of multiple very rare cancers,
I feel like I am becoming invisible👽😢👽
The support groups are all a joke
with all the wah wah boo hoos whining
people who are going to survive
and or have already.
It is creepy but I swear people in
such groups actually
become jealous of people sicker
than they are👽😢
They treat it all as a contest
to show off
and complain how bad they are and all
and ignore those who genuinely
are worse off then most of them🤬👽
And the damn t=shirts and tattoos
broadcasting to all how they
are warriors and and weirdly creepily
act as if they are
proud of having cancers and such👽👽👽
If I were to cover my body with
tattoos of all that I afflicted with,
I would be totally covered in tattoos😳👽
Well anyhow it is a
very lonely path to be on😢
And it is often near beyond hard
to not give up😢
Been planning suicide
if this all cannot be cured.☠️💀👻
Have not found a vampire to help solve my problem yet😎
I refuse to die in a hospital
or away from home if I can
prevent that nightmare.
If the time comes I want to
be preferably outside and
not trapped inside anywhere💙
I wish our state had
legal euthenasia 💙
Wish me good luck that the chemo
and radiation and more surgeries
will be able to save my life💙💖😎
Scared lost in agony often exhausted
weak and more bad things😢👽
Losing about a pound a day
and cannot stop it👽
It is very bad to be this way😢🤮

Yeah, I'm getting over covid, and hoping I won't end up in the hospital anyway. I've just read about a man who caught it two weeks ago, and just had his foot amputated.

I'm sick, too. I'm hoping my dad won't get it. I am freaked out over things in my life, and it's just likely going to get worse. So good luck to all of us.

Sorry you are sick💙😢

We caught Covid in January 2020
before it became news👽
Caught it from the biitch excuse
for a doctor
who refused to be my PCP any longer
when her gross negect led to my
having multiple rare cancers that
she said I did not need checked for
and that all was okay👽🤬
She just guessed and never examined me
not took me seriously 🤬
and laughed as usual and said
I was fat and needed to lose weight
so losing about 100 pounds
without trying in a very short time
and 3 years of daily vomiting caused
her even more reasons to laugh and
say shiite like well don't
eat so much🤬👽🤬
So because of her neglect and
medical blunders like her giving
me drugs that ruptured my
archilles tendons and
torn parts of them and
so we once to then I cannot walk
hardly at all🤬😢
And other crap,
I am kind of in medical limbos here👽🤬😢

COVID😳😢🤬👽
It was horrible to say the least😢
102 to 103 fevers with heavy sweating
and chills.👽😢
The hospitals refused treatment
unless one. actually could
not breathe😳🤬👽

We made sure to get vaccinated
since then
4 shots for both me and my husband.
With us both fighting medically
for our lives vaccinations are
things we dare not neglect getting.
A common cold could kill when
folks are severely
immunocompromised as we both are😳😢

Good thing too that we are
each 4X vaccinated now because
our anti-vaccers neighbors
who trespass have aLl been infected.🤬😳
Some very bad some just plaguing
everyone else🤬👽
So within like 10 to 75 feet f
rom our bedroom window for example
are at least lately,
25 people who do not care who
they infect🤬👽

We can hear them coughing and
HHabe seen them they spit loogies
into your yard even right
under our windows😢
Well one of them does.
Nasty hag who has also stolen at
least 3 of our Walmart grocery
deliveries🤬
Our Christmas feast one🤬
and oddly out anneversary feast one🤬
and then my husband's birthday feast🤬

As to the main crap going on in my
nightmarish life👽👽👽

I get different diagnosises and outcome projections from the
gynocological oncologists👽👽🤬

So the guesses are my odds of
surviving are not very high👽😢🤬
Projections range from 6 months
to 2 years with weekly chemo
plus extra toxic added every 3 weeks.
Then like 6 months radiation if
I survive the chemo.
Then extremely dangerous pelvic
and adominal just to below the lungs
surgeries.
Yep gutted 👽😢
I do not know whether I should
keep trying or not👽😢
Scared and lost and angry about
the DES given to mothers like
mine that causes the horrible
cancers I now have.🤬😢

I am going to keep trying until I win
or if it looks like I am not winning
then I shall continue considering
the best and legal way of planning out
my suicide 💙
or go to a state that has legal
euthenasia maybe💙

Weird part is the first jerk doctor,
a world famous one supposedly,
pretty much said I would be dead
before June this year's👽👽👽
________________________________
Apologies for the griping rant💙
I am not in a good place of late👽😢

Anyhow getting vaccinated is the only protection even if you avoid people.

I hope you 💙recover soon💙 and that
no one else gets infected from those who have it💙😢

Pardon any typos or weird autofills 💙

Still feeling like the cranky old man😭👽💙
However I am still continuing to keep on
fighting
and to survive these 5 rare cancers and live for many more years😎❤️
Yes I am still disabled and suffer from dozens of mostly rare syndromes and more but I have not given up yet😎
The hardest part is how people often ignore gravely ill folks and even get upset or downright angry at them for many reasons all of which is not the ill person's fault👽😭🤬
We who suffers terrible disabling and often agonizing conditions 😭
are still alive and simply ask that folks
treat us with respect and try to put themselves in our shoes and think about how would they want to be treated by well folks💙💙💙

Rant over 💙

By the way
Note
Try and st a moment and listen to us tell our
stories of our lives
take a moment and ask questions
we are not trying to bore you and if you do take the time to get to know us as people who were once not seriously ill and or dying
you could find real gems in our words and our
tellings of our life experiences💙😎
When I was younger like she 14,
I have friends as old as 102 years old💙😎
And at ages 4 to 9 would go visit the Summer neighbors in our little wooded retreat for retired scientists and other fascinating folks
many not from America😳😎
I would listen for hours to them and try to help them do things😎❤️
I learned so very much from those wonderful folks😎❤️

Please pardon any typos or strange autofills 👽
