Something just occurred to me. I preferred "boy clothes" as a girl because it was okay if I stained or ripped them, unlike more expensive girl clothes. Now if you work at a place that doesn't pay much, I can see keeping up with fashion a problem. (Though the pockets of women's pants are downright insulting, even some cargo pants are absurd, and no coincidence, those who make such pants with mere token pockets also sell purses, and woe to those who don't buy one since I've known more than one homeless woman whose phone fell out of her pocket or lost other stuff because she was able to get free pants for women but not a purse.) That is, it takes money. And if you spend that extra then it can make other women you work with feel pressured to. (It's not just women...neighborhoods can become toxic as the Joneses try to keep up or surpass the others in how they maintain their yard, it's a means of social status.) So your wearing dresses was breaking an unspoken rule that caused others to discourage you from wearing them. But as it's an unspoken rule rather than codified rule they had to be passive aggressive and such with it, and they felt they either had to make you stop wearing dresses or they'd be obligated to start (which costs more money that they can't afford, or at least would rather spend elsewhere). At least it makes sense to me that way, because you are NOT a fashion rebel when it comes to the wider world outside your workspace (like even those office clothes I linked to in my first post on this thread that included business dresses). That makes sense. I get reactions at current job sometimes. The passive aggressive comments make me wonder. Is what I wear really that big of a threat?! Like I don't think me wearing slacks and a blouse is going to make my boss say everyone dress like Stawr now. But the reactions can be so aggressive, like am I really that powerful? I don't think I am. Overall I like my coworkers here much better. But once in a while I'll get a mood swing with my fashion choices. One teacher could comment at my choices but it came from a place of security, because she dressed like Ms. Frizzle. It was more of a "breakin my balls" kind of like how guys do, it's light hearted. Probably cause I got nothin on her, and that's okay. XD She's a Taurus Well my Gemini co-worker has the mood swings. One day I did wear heels it was the Christmas party. When I walked by her she would be talking to someone else and say "I wear shoes that are CoMfOrTaBlE" Obviously wanted me to hear. It was so annoying I stopped wearing them to work. I vented to two co-workers later who agreed that she shouldn't of said anything. And that Gemini teacher can be stuck up sometimes. She did this again when I wore slacks and a blouse. Which had me like REALLY!? Because this was me being tame at my previous jobs, that had rules like no jeans. Now teacher's can't wear slacks and blouses??? She has a great fashion sense btw and I like her style for her and have no issue with it. Another one of those comments like "I wear clothes that are comfortable" I finally just said. I don't spend money on clothes like this my sister and now future mother in law give them away to me.That seemed to put her more at ease. She will compliment me from time to time. I wore a baret(sp?) outside in the fall. Taurus teacher "broke my balls" and referenced the Prince song. I sang in the halls "Cranberry baret" since it was dark red. But then Pisces teacher said "teachers are not suppose to be fashionable" Like really that's all I have to do is put a baret on my head and I'm a fashion snob. It's that easy? I understand this teacher better. I think part of it is I am so much younger than the other teachers. No one treats you like an adult until you turn 30??? My assistant in my first year there tested the waters. "Don't you wish you could wear jeans and a T-shirt everyday?" I pretty much told her no. lol She dressed snazzy her self but she was more black leggings and a nice top kind of gal. I participate in dressing this way some days at work. My new assistant last year kind of freaked out on the first day of school. Cause I was wearing a skirt. She asked if her outfit was okay. I told her it was, and I assured her that I wear jeans and a t-shirt to work sometimes too. Overall she was good vibes. She dressed down compared to the rest of the staff overall including hair and no make up almost everyday. But it was nice that she didn't try to change while still following the code. Feminine clothes aren't always expensive though. I have a dress from 5 and Below. But I can see how people can connect feminine to expensive though. But its an illusion. My most expensive clothing item is a white sweater wrap. IP: Logged |

I haven’t dressed up in so long. My mum used to, all the time - she hardly ever wore jeans, but loved her leggings, when she was at home. IP: Logged |

No, and I'm one of the reasons why it's not always expensive. But those who compete are going to be, or soon will be. Men compete in similar ways, from cars to tech toys. Both men and women can be suckers for the latest phone that sucks. Schools have their own type of crazy. Whether it attracts the crazies or makes them crazy, I don't know (either is believable to me). Thankfully, your experiences sound completely alien to me (at least since I left public school, and that was done with a very different measuring stick, one by students and one by faculty, different from each other but neither like yours) and I haven't heard of anyone else describing that (though the opposite--as in pushing standard gender wear--still makes the news), and what all the stores sell tell me that your situation is localized.
