It`s like February and March reversed them selves on the calendar. 5 days til spring ------------------ Partial truth~the seeds of wisdom~can be found in many places...The seeds of wisdom are contained in all scriptures ever written… especially in art, music, and poetry and, above all, in Nature.

Most of the cherry blossoms froze Fortunately, I eat and preserve our local crops of blueberries & strawberries . They grow wild here and are basically free to eat. I can imagine what the fruit crop prices will be this year. ------------------ Partial truth~the seeds of wisdom~can be found in many places...The seeds of wisdom are contained in all scriptures ever written… especially in art, music, and poetry and, above all, in Nature.

I used to live where we had plum trees. When they drop on the ground, they are perfectly ripe. Not like in a grocery store.IP: Logged |

My little corner of the world has 4 varieties of apple, a plum, pear, bing cherry , 2 mulberry trees and 3 variety grape arbor. All of it is used either for us, family or free range for the chickens and dogs Wild apples and blueberries make the best pies tho! ------------------ Partial truth~the seeds of wisdom~can be found in many places...The seeds of wisdom are contained in all scriptures ever written… especially in art, music, and poetry and, above all, in Nature.

Agreed! I use to have pie bake offs with others and I always won!My pies were not pretty like the pies of the other entrants; but my pies and their crusts were taste perfections! Mine got eaten up fast! Oh man did it p!ss off the makers of the perfect eye pleasing pies! Dozens of their pies most with only a piece eaten, sat next to my empty tins. To me the taste of a pie matters far more than being a picture perfect pie.

Wild Elderberry, wild Huckleberry and wild Black Raspberry pies are awesome! Wild Crab Apples with walnuts or wild hickory nuts or wild beech nuts are very tasty! Hard to find those wild eats these days though. One of my grandmothers and an aunt, who lived in Waycross and Valdosta Georgia, use to make fabulous prickly pear/peach/pecan pies! Yummy!Persimmon, Quince, and thorn apple pies are also delicious! The thorn apple or rose hips work best as a flavor addition to the Persimmon, Quince, or even wild or crab apple pies. Now my mouth is watering just thinking of and remembering the exquisite taste of all those pies! IP: Logged |

Wild mulberry both red and white are very good in pies too! Too bad the damn deer and groundhogs usually eat them all and even eat the leaves off the trees or bushes. Groundhogs and squirrels and grackles make a mess of Mulberry trees and fruit. They poop all over the place just like the deer. Also groundhogs can climb a 40 foot tall tree with no problem. I finally cut my Mulberry trees down even though I love Mulberries, because they attracted too much vermin. Also when birds eat Mulberries their poop turns into purple and red goo and they stain the house roof and crap all over the car and any laundry or lawn/yard furniture. Ugh. Oh yeah after eating Mulberries grackles will sometimes get in the house down the chimney and get chased by our cats and then the stupid birds poop purple goo everywhere. More ugh.IP: Logged |

That sounds wonderful! I miss the wild apples that were once here in abundance. Wild white grapes are rare these days too. Love the plum pears! Choke cherries are good too but better in preserves than pies because of having to get the seeds out.

Oh yes! Super ripe plums of any kind or color are best when they are so ripe that they fall to the ground. But then up here you have to be fast and gather them up before the yellow jackets and other stinging/biting insects get to them and the vermin too, groundhogs, deer, and so forth. I knew a person who called an old fashioned type of brown/green plum, "a poo plum". Yeah, when very ripe the inside did look kind of like excrement; but the taste was sooooo good and plummy sweet! Cannot usually beat fresh off the tree as opposed to store bought fruits.IP: Logged |
