Aspects to the MarsAll planets have their own unique energy harmonics and characteristics. When we talk about the effect of aspects, what we are talking about is how the two planetary energies associated with the two planets interact with each other. Some aspects are harmonious or aid each other’s energy (Conjunct, Sextile, and Trines), while others are inharmonious and in conflict with each other’s energy (Square and Oppose).
The following are some of the general energy characteristics associated with each planet:
Ascendant – one’s self-image, expression of the “Self” in the world
Sun – willpower and creative potential
Moon – the unconscious mind, automatic emotional responses, memories
Mercury – thinking, reasoning abilities, communications
Venus – artistic abilities, sense of harmony, growth through relationships
Mars – expressed energy, assertiveness
Jupiter – expansion, awareness, personal values
Saturn – patience, determination, restructuring one’s life for growth
Uranus – sudden unexpected changes, intuition, rebalancing
Neptune – clouds the vision and introduces new ideas, psychic abilities
Pluto – transformation, rebirth
North Node – cultural trends and fads, path of spiritual growth
Keep in mind that each of the meanings is only one part of the whole, and as such, are affected by other events in the chart. A chart must always be viewed as a Gestalt, not just a series of individual meanings.
The following aspect meanings are in part taken from by Frances Sakoian and Louis Akers’s book “The Astrologer’s Handbook”. Their work in my opinion is one of the best on understanding the natal chart. I highly recommend it for those just getting started in reading natal charts.
Ascendant
Conjunct – the Mars assertive energy is expressed in the individual’s personality. One thing that can be said about this aspect in a person’s chart is that the individual will be noticed in the world because of their activities. The Mars energy is often expressed in leadership capabilities, and the individual will take a leadership role in some way in their environment. They will often try to force others to their will through aggressive action. They generally have rugged constitutions and muscular bodies. The old saying that they will often walk right in where angels fear to tread is certainly true of these individuals. If Mercury and Saturn are strong in their charts, they will show some restraint and foresight.
Sextile – This aspect favors initiating action that inspires cooperation in public and private dealings. Generally their character is one of frankness, and direct and forceful self-expression.
Square – This mixture of energies usually results in an aggressive personality, both in their private and public relationships. Unfortunately, this often leads to relationship problems, and general unpopularity. This frustrates the individual, often resulting in angry scenes and a feeling of paranoia. If Mars or the Ascendant are heavily afflicted, the individual may turn out to be a bully, who tries to dominate others.
Trine – the two energies combine to produce a strong physical constitution with a strong willpower and decisiveness. Their sense of direction and strength inspire others to cooperate and follow them. Their lives are active and they accomplish a great deal through directed action.
Oppose – this produces an individual who is aggressive in their dealings with others. They are difficult to work with because it takes a great deal of energy on others part. All their relationships are emotionally packed, particularly their intimate ones. This often is the result of strong desires on one or the others part, desires which are often unrecognized by that person.

Jupiter
Conjunct – In this aspect, Mar’s energy is expressed as an abundance of energy and enthusiasm in projects that they consider important. They are not people who accept “No” as a viable response to their desires. Those in business with this aspect will be un-relentless in their efforts to be successful. They tend to be patriotic, and if Mars is poorly aspected can become fanatic in their endeavors.
Sextile – this aspect blends the two energies together in the individual’s work, self-expression, and efforts toward self-improvement. They generally have an optimistic outlook on life and do not easily acknowledge defeat. The’re generous, but always in a practical way. They are usually religious, and are often engaged in working for the betterment of others in need. Seldom, if ever, will you find a lazy person with this aspect.
Square – The two energies mix here resulting in a destructive tendency to use their power and social sanctions for self-aggrandizing and self-gratification. This aspect is often found in those who glorify war or fight so called holy wars to gain social approval of their violent tendencies. These individuals are often involved with the misuse and waste of other’s resources. They are also inclined toward religious fanaticism. While these individuals are usually socially outgoing, they are very unreliable or honorable in their dealings with others. Hypocrisy is often associated with their beliefs, and they seldom practice what they preach.
Trine – the mix of energies here give an ability to act with energy and enthusiasm. Their Jupiter humanitarian outlook finds a constructive outlet through Mars energy. They go beyond just being concerned for others, and actively work for those in need. They generally put their belief systems into direct action with an ardent enthusiasm. They gain wisdom and awareness through helping others. Many consider this aspect a sign of good karma, reward for contributions and actions in past lives.
Oppose – Mars energy combines with Jupiter here to produce extravagant tendencies, particularly in regard to money. While they may appear to be outgoing and friendly, often that is just a mask to cover their own desires. Their endeavors are often designed to promote their own interest, not the others. They are often very opinionated in promoting their view of reality, or at least some aspect of it. They can be quite irritating in this regard. They can often be seen in the forefront of some great cause, accepting the rewards, but actually contributing very little. A restlessness and desire for new adventure marks this aspect. Many times they come off as “a legion in their own minds”.
Saturn
Conjunct – Saturn’s energy helps focus Mar’s energy resulting in the ability to perform hard work, and have endurance in the projects they engage in, and be courageous in their efforts. This aspect also favors military endeavors where caution and prudence are helpful. There is a tendency to suppress their anger until it spills over in a traumatic event. Saturn frustrates Mars need for immediate action, allowing anger to build up.
Sextile – the two energies mix best here where the individual is engaged in strenuous and disciplined work. Endurance and fortitude are characteristics of this aspect. The individual‘s energy is usually focused in a practical and efficient manner. Saturn restrains Mar’s impulsive energy, and Mar’s turns Saturn’s fearfulness to courage. The individual with this aspect usually lacks a great deal in the charm area, but can accomplish a great deal on anything he or she sets their sights on.
Square – the mix of the two energies produce a harsh and austere disposition, usually negative in their attitudes. They feel that others are blocking their way, and feel resentment towards them, particularly in their relationships. To these people, it seems that if something can go wrong, it will, and usually make their life a mess. Selfishness is a common characteristic of this individual. They only help others when they see direct benefits to themselves.
Trine – this aspect combines all of the favorable qualities of Saturn and Mars. It produces an ability for hard work and serious purposeful action. These individuals don’t waste their efforts on unproductive endeavors, preferring instead to focus their energy and willpower for maximum results. They are high ambitious and don’t mind working hard to achieve their goals. While the aspect confers great willpower, it also confers patience and wisdom in its application.
Oppose – this mixture often produces a resentful and oppressive nature. They feel resentful that others don’t see their natural superiority, and often react aggressively to what they consider disrespect for their abilities. Actually, they are quite insecure in their abilities and try to cover it up by being aggressive. They often have difficulties with those in authority, from parents to bosses at work. They feel that they shouldn’t have to listen to someone of less ability than their selves.
Uranus
Conjunct – In this aspect, Mar’s energy is allowed freedom to express themselves in sudden and surprising ways. There is a tendency to rebel against any constraints or attempts to control their activities and thoughts. They are constantly looking for stimulation in their lives, and generally find it by living on the edge of danger. They are often found in areas like racing, or some of the new extreme sports, as well as solders of fortune. They gain emotional satisfaction from pitting themselves against high odds and beating them.
Sextile – The result of the fiery Mar’s energy and Uranus’s sudden and unexpected energies is an individual who can make rapid and decisive decisions, and who has strong willpower and courage. They may make unique contributions in their life that will bring them fame and status. The only problem that they have is that their will is stronger than their physical ability at times, leading to injuries. They have forceful dispositions and know exactly what they want in life.
Square – This aspect produces reckless and dangerous action on the individual’s part. They are ruled by their impulsive natures, usually resulting in problems. They are prone towards disagreement with others. They love to live on the edge, to participate in extreme and dangerous activities. They are subject to sudden temper flare-ups, and must guard against their impulsiveness. They would do well to work on developing patience and being willing to cooperate with others. While they may engage in sudden eruptive behavior, they seldom lack the will to sustain any particular activity.
Trine – produces originality and resourcefulness towards their goals in life. They have good willpower and use it in a wise and decisive manner. They are not shackled to the past, but are willing to adapt and change when the situation warrants it. They normally are direct and outspoken in their approach to others. They make fine leaders, and often aspire to leadership positions. They believe in personal freedom and independence of action not only for themselves, but others as well.
Oppose – here the two energies mix in an explosive way producing individuals who are inclined to explosive outbursts. They are usually ill-tempered and irritable. The hate any type of discipline or routine. Their stubbornness and desire for personal freedom make them very difficult to deal with, and often create great problems for them in life. They can learn, but usually they take the hard way. They find it difficult to make or keep friends because of their desire to always have their own way. Often they confuse their desires with their wills, creating problems.
Neptune
Conjunct – In this aspect, Mar’s energy provides strong psychic abilities. They can draw upon this energy for various tasks, such as healing or engaging in occult activities. They seldom act in an open manner, preferring secrecy for their endeavors. If they can control and guide their awareness they are capable of achieving great spiritual awareness and insight. If they don’t control their awareness they are subject to making impulsive and ill conceived actions that often lead to turmoil in their life.
Sextile – This mix of planetary energies produces super physical energy that can be used for healing or work in the occult. They prefer to work quietly behind the scenes in order not to create resistance to their endeavors. They are great at developing strategies and carrying them out. They can also be found in areas where they use their bodies in subtle and imaginative ways to convey a message, such as actors. They are usually honest and trustworthy, and usually in good control of their emotions.
Square – The two energies merge here to generate peculiar emotional desires from deep in their unconsciousness. They tend to be a slave of the unconscious habit patterns, many of which are offensive to others. If they are unable to openly expresses their feelings, they are often subject to various forms of neurosis. If they express their feelings openly, they often do so in the form of alcoholism, drug, or sexual excess. At the best, they are often confused about their life, and how others react to them. They can however, if developed enough, display their emotions appropriately in artistic endeavors. They have the tendency to be self-deceptive, since they often don’t have a clue why they are behaving in the way that they are.
Trine – indicates energized psychic abilities that can be used productively in healing or occult endeavors. They have a sixth sense for danger in a situation, and will make adjustments to compensate for it in their activities. They prefer to act secretly in order to outmaneuver their adversaries, and achieve their goals with as little of resistance as possible. This aspect combines stamina with an acute perception. They usually process skills in physical activities, such as dancing and sports. They are extremely sensitive to their environment which helps them in their endeavors.
Oppose – this aspect indicates a subtle and hard-to-control desire nature. They are often unaware of the motivations behind their actions, which are often violent. Because most of their behavior is controlled by their unconscious desires, they can be very difficult to be around. They are often deceitful in their activities, and their behavior is usually reactive instead of proactive. They are sometimes controlled by unhealthy sexual desires that when acted upon, cause them difficulties and sometimes imprisonment. They of all people should stay clear of all drugs and alcohol, because at best they have minimal conscious control over their actions, and these substances would only reduce that. If they are involved with spiritual endeavors they can often become involved in fanatical movements and revolts. Such beliefs often allow them to carry out their desires without consequences.
Pluto
Conjunct – Pluto’s intense energy coupled with Mar’s assertive energy produces tremendous power in their actions. They are often able to tap into the universal energy for their endeavors. They have great endurance and force of will allowing them to accomplish feats far beyond other’s abilities. They have immense courage and will power and are unafraid of facing of just about anything. Depending upon which energy is stronger; Mar’s or Pluto’s, their energy can be constructive or destructive. If Mars is stronger, their motivation will often be personal gain, egotism, or greed. However if Pluto’s energy is stronger, they will be able to control and funnel their Mars energy into proper channels for the good of others.
Sextile – Mars and Pluto’s energy coupled together in a Sextile produces tremendous energy, courage, and will power. They tend to have the ability to draw upon natural forces to help in their endeavors, consciously and unconsciously, to bring about changes that are beneficial to their needs. Their inner and spiritual awareness is high and they often engage in physical activities to heighten their own level of awareness, such as hatha-yoga.
Square – here the two energies mix in a dangerous manner to produce an overly forceful nature, resulting in an individual who uses force first, instead of reason. If other chart factors are positive, this aspect can result in someone with great courage and willpower. They need to always look at what their motivations are for their actions, and make sure that it doesn’t spring from egotism. Those with less positive chart indicators, often display violent tempers and action. They often play out this temperament in their sexual activities. While their willpower is strong, their ability to focus it towards appropriate ends is not.
Trine – the two planetary energies combine here to produce a well-developed willpower and the ability to regenerate their personal life and all that they touch through decisive and constructive action. Their penetrating insight and realism combined with their willpower produces the power to act quickly and decisively. They will fight ruthlessly and give no quarter for those things that they believe in. They have the ability to recharge their energies through drawing on universal energy.
Oppose – here the two energies create a conflict between the individuals desires and actions. If they are highly evolved, this aspect can indicate a test on their ability to walk the spiritual path. He struggle will be between their personal desire and the needs of others. They usually gain real power and then are faced with how to use the power that they acquire wisely and for the good of all. Their ability to accept others as they are and not try to remake them fit their needs will determine the degree too which they grow and evolve.
North Node
Conjunct – The mix of energy in this aspect produces harmony and cooperation with others in their environment. The only problem is that just because everyone agrees on a course of action, doesn’t mean that it is the correct course of action. In such a circumstance, the Mar’s energy can go off half cocked and end in destruction.
Sextile – produces the ability to act in the right time to further their own goals and improve their status level in society. Their efforts to bring about constructive change will gain approval and support from their culture.
Square – indicates that the individual’s activities are often at odds with the rest of societies. They tend to express their aggressiveness in inappropriate ways and at inappropriate times. They may feel that if they didn’t have bad luck, they’d have no luck at all. It isn’t that their luck is bad, it’s the timing that’s off.
Trine – produces the ability to act in harmony within their culture and belief system. They are usually popular with others and often become leaders in their communities. This may take the form of a political office where they can be successful in dealing with social trends and institutions.
Oppose – this aspect can cause the individual to question their societies violent action towards others. They may pull away from their culture and become loners if they disagree too much with its actions.
