What does aspect to the ascendant mean and how do you determine it? I looked at the course but it doesn't say how you are supposed to know. Thank You

Hi Silverbells
Do you know how to get your free natal chart from www.astro.com
That site will calculate your chart for you and give you the aspects to the different planets in your chart.

Here's some info re aspects (just focus on the major aspects)

Major Aspects

Conjunction - This is when two planets are found at the same degree of the Zodiac - though anything up to 8° of a difference would do: for example, the Moon at 17° Sagittarius and Mars at 18°. This would be a very close conjunction. The energies of planets in conjunction act so closely in tandem that they virtually form a whole new hybrid planet. You never find one operating without the influence of the other. This can be a good or a bad thing, depending on the planets involved, and the aspects they form to other planets.

Opposition - This occurs when planets stare at each other from the exact opposite side of the chart wheel, 180° apart. Their energies pull in different directions and cause psychological splits and some quite bizarre and extreme shifts of behaviour. Not an easy thing to live with. 8° is the allowable orb.

Trine - Planets are in trine when they're about 120° apart. This is thought to be a helpful aspect, but more accurately it's an 'easy' aspect. The energies involved work together in peace and harmony in a kind of natural, un-self-conscious way, which isn't always a good thing. For example, a nice easy relationship between Pluto and Mars would pave the way for violent, self-obsessed manipulating and war mongering! Again, you can have an 8° orb.

Square - This is a 90° relationship. Planets in square indicate energies in serious tension. There's a compulsive quality about a square. One of the planets tends to compel the other one to act in an extreme way, causing all manner of problems. Overcoming these problems is a good way to find out about your faults and failings.

Sextile - This is a 60° aspect. The 'allowable orb' drops now from 8°, to about 4°. Planets in sextile indicate energies that, with a bit of imagination, can be made to work very well together and further your aims and intentions. Altogether, these are considered good aspects, or aspects of 'opportunity'.

Hope that helps you out. Let me know if you have any problems working out the aspects in your chart.

Here's the link to aspects to the ascendent that we've covered on this course....

Hi Cat! No I haven't. I looked at the chart drawing and it has numbers all over the place, in front of the planets's names after the planets's names. I don't know what they represent.

Hi Silverbells
If you post your birth data I'll take a look for you. In order to do that I'll need your day, month, year, time & place of birth. Plus can you actually write the month out rather than just putting the numbers as different countries write dates numerically in a different way - which can be confusing.

I've listed all your major aspects. Some of them are really too wide eg 9 degree conjunction. Check my earlier post above re the orb allowances. I personally would consider an 8 orb to be too wide and so would consider both your Moon and Jupiter to be unaspected.
A planet is considered as unaspected when it makes no major aspect to another planet in your chart. (The angles, asteriods and NN are not planets).
