Today in my astronomy class we learned about revolutions and rotations of planets and to me it sounded basically like rotation meant how long a planet stays in one sign while revolution means how long until a planet takes to make one trip around the zodiac.Example: The way I understand it, the rotation of Uranus would be approximately 7 years because Uranus stays in one sign for approximately 7 years (including it's time when it retrogrades back into another sign). The revolution of Uranus would be 84 years because it takes Uranus 84 years to make one full trip around the zodiac. Tomorrow for example, Uranus will enter Taurus permanently for about 7 years; the last time it was in Taurus was 1942 (it stayed in Taurus from 1932-1942 including when it retrograded back into Aries at the beginning of its stay in Taurus as it does whenever it enters a new sign). Is this a correct understanding of a revolution and rotation or am I only thinking of it astrologically? I've found myself trying to understand astronomy through the lens of astrology and I haven't failed myself yet. IP: Logged |

My understanding is that planets rotate around their own axis and revolve around another planet. So, Earth rotates (around its own axis) once a day and revolves (around the Sun) once a year. Whilst, Uranus rotates around its own axis once in every 17 hours and revolves around the sun once in every 84 years. IP: Logged |
