I had to load a backpack and leave the premises for a long while the other day.
It was eye-opening to see what I valued most!

This was my very first book.
1. Alan Oken's Complete Astrology, c 1988.
Even today, IF there was only ONE book I could take, that's the one I would choose to bring with me. It's not only informational, but Mr. Oken is a very Soul-Lifting Inspirational writer (at least, to me-- I weep good tears when I read his descriptions.. oh my, ~silly me!! haha). *thumbsup*

*~
2. The New American Ephemeris for the 20th Century *1900-2000* at Midnight. Michelsen Memorial Edition, by Rique Pottenger.

3. The New American Ephemeris for the 20th Century *2000-2001* at Midnight. Michelsen Memorial Edition, by Rique Pottenger.

2 & 3 -- because I already know how to use those well, and can 'see' a lot there. Love to research the various years and generations. Has eclipse info in the tables. I observe things in the news, and 'see' the influences. It's all spelled out!

*~
4. Robert Hand, Planets in Transit.
A great read just for the philosophy and psychological insights-- whether you know your transits or not. After you print out your own chart, and learn the basics-- then use 2 & 3, and explore your chart and history using this book. It's also good for 'extrapolating' meanings of your natal aspects and chart configurations.
There's a great informative article introduction that leads off this book.

5. Demetra George & Dennis Bloch. Asteroid Goddesses: The Mythology, Psychology, and Astrology of the Re-emerging Feminine;
New Edition with Updates Ephemerides of 16 asteroids, *1930-2050*. 1986,2003.

*~
An astrology dictionary can also help.
I recommend this one.

6. The Arkana Dictionary of Astrology.
Fred Gettings, 1985,1990.
Is a very small paperback, good for taking in your purse/man-bag.
It's loaded with goodies...
You can have your nose in that book and stay interested for HOURS!

Would (personally) bring #1. and #6. on long-distance trips where you are without a lot of room to budge or move around.

*~

Bring small colored post-its and small scissors to create tabs.
Have pencil and eraser,
and a straight-edge {ruler} for help drawing straight lines.

Also!!
Erasable color-pencils {or regular color pencils} are great-aids-- drawing your own tiny astrological glyphs in the margins, and underline words in same-color for same-elements, in books #1. and #5.
.. Helps with visually organizing and digesting your study materials, providing you with a quick-visual TO certain paragraphs and pages.

Good Luck with your studies!
