Dichotomies are so important, I feel like your explanation illustrates the why perfectly! IP: Logged |

These stories seem to be engulfed in hectic sexual violence against women. The word "rape" seems to be used very lightly in them and from counselling someone whom I know has gone through that ordeal,I can tell you that it is far from "casual". I can't also help thinking that they should all be taken only within the context of whom was writing them (men). As they put a lot of emphasis on the "beautiful" woman/virgin being violently "deflowered". And this was and still remains a pervasive fantasy for me. Masculinity in the days of old could have been seen in this light i.e brawn and muscle where men "took" what they wanted and women were "passive",subservient and meek to fight against such sexual invasiveness. When I read this story, I think of Hades & Persephone. Though the story has been edited by some accounts to make it seem like it was a misunderstood "love story", the tale still smells of male bravado snatching feminine innocence and violating it. This violence against women continues to this day i.e women are largely victims of rape, serial killings and violent murders so much so that its often imprinted in their psyche that this is the way of the world i.e"This is a man's world." I think these asteroids need a modern day update and for them to be examined in a more objective light then merely inferring what they were said to symbolize in days of old. Otherwise we may miss the whole story and become frightful of their fatalistic implications. IP: Logged |

I usually find your posts very clear but I'm not sure I understand what you mean here. You seem to disagree with what I wrote but what you detail actually agrees with it, it's confusing. Mostly, I have expressed myself around here about how poorly read I've been in this place (as well as the fact I have been raped, abused, bullied, and assaulted myself, so I don't really need you or anyone to tell me anything about rape based on your second hand experiences of it, I have plenty of vivid memories, not to mention emotional, mental, psychological and especially physical scarring from my own experiences) but I thought the ironic tone and humour of my post were heavily signalled enough with the smileys and ridiculous statements all over. For example: making the encounter seem so very minor was a direct caricature of how immense some people make it to be when within the context of the writing it's neither, for all the reasons you aptly pointed at (gender of the authors, general masculine context...). It's so not fair to discuss it as a social study when it was a plain and quite simplistic "shades of grey here" humorous line. I selfishly wrote this for myself because the word "abuse" is used so loosely and dangerously on this forum and I needed to take a wee on this notion to help myself not feel like some piece of Deedee Sorry if *I* was confusing IP: Logged |
