I will give you some context with which to consider what I have to say on the matter: the year is 2023, nearly 2024. Back in August of 2018, my daughter was diagnosed with ADHD and concurrently, major depressive disorder - DUE TO a late, as in she was 14, ADHD diagnosis. We cycled through many drugs for her mood disorder and as of this writing, she has had 6 cycles of DBT, where she is admitted into a private hospital for 1/2 a day each time. I suspect my husband has ADHD as well. It did not help that he married me, who has Asperger’s. Among my mother’s grandchildren, 2 have officially diagnosed ADHD, 2 have officially diagnosed ASD, 1 has suspect ADHD and 1 has suspect ADHD. That’s a total of 6 out of 7 grandchildren. Among my daughter’s closest friends, there are 3 more with ADHD. All of them have been coming to my house for the past 7 years. One of my closest friends and her son also has ADHD. That’s more context for you. Heck, I could run a whole focus group based off the number of people I know with ADHD. 🤔 Now I don’t care whether you subscribe to medication or “unicorn magical dust” but I do know what I’m saying when I tell you that medication is 1) necessary (watch Dr. Russell Barkley, renown ADHD expert, on his YouTube lectures, pause at the part of SHORTENED LIFESPANS and causes) 2) only half the story (the other half is coping strategies and behaviour modification) through PLENTY of therapy. The worse thing a parent can be is in denial.🙏 ADHD has 5 mutated genes, ditto ASD. They have 7 mutated genes in common. The issues will not go anywhere if we go the unicorn dust route. As members of society, we OWE it to society to raise functional contributing members. While the children are in school, we have to be mindful that ALL children are there to get an education. ALL CHILDREN. We cannot let our “special snowflake” derail lessons simply by being badly behaved. Whether this means teachers incentivise children to cooperate or penalise them for poor behaviour…or parents medicate those children into a “manageable state” (being mindful of the other 20 something children who can’t get an education because these “special snowflakes” are misbehaving!) - the goal is for teachers to be able to deliver lessons to an ENTIRE class. I know of ADHD who refuse to go to school, run away during school times, will not hand in assignments…every single time the talk is about what teachers can do better. Parents, you need to remember that you have chosen to bring this child into existence. The onus is on you to raise this child well. It is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY until the child is functional. The teacher is only a facilitator or his or her education. The teacher cannot replace a lack of parenting. IP: Logged |
