Sorry, Ellynlvx. I know you were hoping for a cute St. Bernard... ...however, St. Francis of Assisi is the Saint commonly associated with Love-Lies-Bleeding. quote: Francis of Assisi had exceptional spiritual insight, he identified with Christ’s suffering, and his words and deeds were tangible expressions of his love for God and all creation — the basis for his patronage of ecologists.Much like the positive qualities of the flower, Love-Lies-Bleeding, St. Francis was able to move beyond his personal pain and suffering. He turned his anguish into compassion for others. Love-Lies-Bleeding was named for its unusual, cascading red flowers that droop almost to the ground during the summer. This plant can grow to four or five feet high. Another name for this early American flower garden plant is Tassel. The plant likes sunny areas and grows in sandy to medium loam and peat soil. Some species of this plant are cultivated for edible grain, and are considered to be highly nutritious. This plant is strong, able to survive many different soil conditions. It is much like the strength that Saint Francis had when he endured his imprisonment during the Perugian war, and the many years he spent living in poverty. The comparison that I find most striking is the name of this glorious plant “Love-Lies-Bleeding” and the connection it has to Saint Francis’ stigmata. The plant was named because of it’s brightly colored, drooping red flowers. Almost as if the plant itself is spilling forth its life’s energy. Saint Francis experienced bleeding wounds from his hands, feet and sides, which never left him for his last two years of his. Love-Lies-Bleeding helps an individual to move beyond personal pain, and to seek out a greater, spiritual awareness. This awareness allows the soul to change pain and suffering into compassion. However, it has been known that some who take this flower essence will sometimes experience physical or emotional pain. But, the difference in the pain felt after, in comparison to the pain felt prior to taking Love-Lies-Bleeding, is much different. A person who is experiencing a particular illness or disability will often reach out to those with similar ailments. This is what Saint Francis did during his twenty years of living a life of poverty and humility. He showed much compassion for the poor and those less fortunate. “The deepest teaching of Love-Lies-Bleeding is centered around the meaning of compassion and sacrifice. This realization within the soul is often called Christ consciousness — the capacity to suffer or to bleed not for ourselves but for all of humanity, and for the redemption of the Earth itself.” (Quotation from: Kaminski, Patricia and Katz, Richard, Flower Essence Repertory, Nevada City, CA: The Flower Essence Society,1994). Saint Francis loved life. He loved helping those less fortunate, and he loved all of God’s creation. He, too, suffered the wounds of Christ, but it was not for himself, it was for those who would be left on Earth. He was a very compassionate man, and this was the basis of naming him the patron saint of ecologists. http://www.flowersociety.org/articles/loveliesbleeding.pdf
Prayer for the Funeral of the Flowers... Prayer of St Francis: Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace. where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; and where there is sadness, joy. Oh, Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console, to be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen. Oh shoot...I already got us all a St. Bernard for Christmas. Love me, love my dog If you love someone, you must love all that belongs to them. ST. BERNARD quotes this proverb in Latin, Qui me amat, amat et canem meum. ~Brewers Dictionary of Phrase and Fable quote:
In the Catholic religion, August 20 is the Feast Day of Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, a medieval French monk who died on that date in 1153 A.D. I’m not a Catholic. But as a dog lover and a quote lover, I’m a big fan of St. Bernard, because he’s the guy who immortalized a saying that’s now best known in the modernized form “Love me, love my dog.”The older versions of this saying, cited by many books and websites, are “Who loves me, loves my dog” and “He who loves me, also loves my dog.” Those are the more traditional and more grammatically correct translations of something Bernard said in a sermon he once gave on another Catholic feast day — the Feast of St. Michael the Archangel, celebrated annually on September 29. St. Bernard’s famous dog quote from that sermon was originally recorded in Latin as “Qui me amat, amat et canem meum.” (Back then, it was common for monks to use Latin for their written records and to deliver sermons in Latin to other monks.) The full sentence this quote comes from is “Dicitur certe vulgari proverbio: Qui me amat, amat et canem meum” — which translates as “It is said truly in a common proverb: who loves me, also loves my dog.” This makes it clear that Bernard was quoting an existing proverb. He didn’t actually coin it himself. But his use became famous and helped popularize the saying.
Contrary to what some people assume, St. Bernard of Clairvaux is not the Catholic saint associated with Saint Bernard dogs. They were named after Saint Bernard of Menthon (a.k.a. Bernard of Montjoux), a different Catholic monk who died in 1008 A.D. That St. Bernard established a monastery and hospice high up in the Alps. Over the centuries, the monks who lived there became famous for their efforts to rescue lost and injured travelers and for the large herding dogs they bred and trained to assist in their search and rescue missions. Since the 1700s, those dogs have been called Saint Bernards. It’s not clear whether St. Bernard of Menthon or St. Bernard of Clairvaux were especially fond of dogs themselves. St. Bernard of Menthon is the patron saint of skiing, not dogs or dog lovers. And, the breed of dogs named in his honor was developed by his followers after his death. St. Bernard of Clairvaux is the patron saint of bees, beekeepers and candle-makers, apparently because Pope Pius VIII nicknamed him the “Honey-Sweet Doctor” for his honey-sweet style of preaching and writing. And, for the record, the topic of the sermon by St. Bernard of Clairvaux that includes the words now paraphrased as “Love me, love my dog” wasn’t actually about canines. It was about angels and their love for humanity. Bernard’s brief reference to dogs in the sermon was part of a metaphorical point he was making. If you read (or use an online translator to decipher) the Latin transcription of his sermon, you find that he was comparing the relationship between dogs and people to the relationship between humans and Jesus. “The holy angels...love us, in fact, because Jesus Christ loved us,” Bernard said in Paragraph 3 of the sermon. “It is said truly in a common proverb: who loves me, also loves my dog...We are the little dogs of the Lord...yes, like small dogs that want to feed on the crumbs that fall from the table of our masters.”
In case you’re wondering, there is a Catholic patron saint of dogs. His name is Saint Roch and his feast day is August 16. According to legend, in the 13th century, Roch became gravely ill after ministering to plague victims and went off into the woods to die. His life was saved by a dog from a nearby home. The dog accidentally found Roch, then brought him food to eat every day and licked his sores until he recovered. I particularly like that legend because it fits my view that the creatures appropriately called “man’s best friend” are among the true saints of this world. http://www.thisdayinquotes.com/2011/08/love-me-love-my-dog.html

And I'll bet you are wondering what do St. Francis of Assisi and St. Bernard have in common? quote:
Christmas carolsIn the ninth and tenth centuries, the Christmas "Sequence" or "Prose" was introduced in North European monasteries, developing under St. Bernard of Clairvaux into a sequence of rhymed stanzas. In the twelfth century the Parisian monk Adam of St. Victor began to derive music from popular songs, introducing something closer to the traditional Christmas carol. In the thirteenth century, in France, Germany, and particularly, Italy, under the influence of St. Francis of Assisi a strong tradition of popular Christmas songs in the native language developed. Christmas carols in English first appear in a 1426 work of John Awdlay, a Shropshire chaplain, who lists twenty five "caroles of Cristemas", probably sung by groups of 'wassailers', who went from house to house...
quote:
LINDA GOODMAN'S - FORGOTTEN MELODIESThe reason for those stirring symphonies, operas, works like "The Messiah," the eternally uplifting music of Christmas carols and certain old church hymns being channeled was to guide material-minded humans along the path of gradual illumination, in a subtle, subliminal sense, through these very high frequency vibrations of sound. Thus far they've been successful in at least somewhat soothing savage humans, who need soothing more than the so-called "savage beasts." This form of enlightenment began during the Dark Ages, thanks to the sacred music of the Catholic Church, and increased during the lifetimes of men like Mozart, Albinoni, Bach, Brahms, Mendelssohn, Tchaikovsky, Puccini, Sibelius and a long list of others. The evolvement of Earthlings through the "music of the masters" was aided by the "art of the masters," as the Higher Powers used the artistic genius of painters like Rubens, Michelangelo, Rembrandt and Leonardo da Vinci to channel the harmonies of color and form into the human mind, along with the harmonies of sound, through music. Chording into the symphony of enlightenment came the poets, beginning with Shakespeare, and even earlier with Greek and Roman drama, who have been similarly channeled to shine the Light of the harmony of the rhythm and rhyming of words into the darkness on Earth. Without these harmonic impressions on the ethers manifesting into the forms and patterns of music, art and poetry, the scientific and technological "advances" made by man would have long ago destroyed all life on this planet...

BODHI in Buddhism is the understanding possessed by a Buddha regarding the nature of things. It is traditionally translated into English with the word enlightenment and literally means awakened. Bodhi is knowledge of the causal mechanism by which beings incarnate into material form and experience suffering.
BUDDHA'S AWAKENING In the suttapitaka, the Buddhist canon as preserved in the Theravada-tradition, a number of texts can be found in which the Buddha tells about his own awakening. In the Vanapattha Sutta the Buddha describes life in the jungle, and the attainment of awakening. After destroying the disturbances of the mind, and the concentration of the mind, he attained three knowledges (vidhya): 1. Insight into his past lives 2. Insight into the workings of Karma and Reincarnation 3. Insight into the Four Noble Truths ------------------ Got the Wings of Heaven on my Shoes. I'm a dancin man and I just can't lose. Correct, Randall ! I like this page: http://srimahabodhi.org/disanayaka.htm Here's a little snippet of the article on the page above, What Buddhists believe about the Bodhi Tree by Prof. J. B. Disanayaka... quote:
The bodhi tree forms an integral part of Buddhist ritual because of its association with the life of the Buddha and thus of its magic. Buddhists believe that this tree possesses magical powers which no other tree in the world possesses. The term bodhi is used by Buddhists to denote two distinct meanings: in a narrow sense, it denotes the ficus religiosa tree under which the last of the Buddhas, Siddhartha Gautama attained Enlightenment; in a broad sense, it denotes any tree under which a Buddha has attained Enlightenment. The birth, the growth and the death of a bodhi tree, according to Buddhist mythology and folklore, is steeped in mystery and magic. A bodhi tree is born, Buddhists believe, on the same day as that which marks the birth of the Buddha himself, who will sit under that tree in his quest for Enlightenment. However, it does not die on the day the Buddha passes away. Instead it remains till the very end of the kalpa, a mythological period of time that is almost beyond measure. At the end of the period, called kalpanta, the world will be destroyed in one of three ways: by the kalpanta varsha, the Rain; by the kalpanta vahni, the Fire; and by the kalpanta vata, the Wind. The last place on the earth that would be thus destroyed would be the site of the bodhi tree. ... The bodhi tree, being a symbol of the Buddha, is endowed with another power: the power to predict the future.

* LINDA GOODMAN'S STAR SIGNS ~ PHYSICAL IMMORTALITY *The situation echoes once more the ancient adage quoted, of necessity, so often in this book:When the student is ready, the teacher will appear... Until the dawning of the golden Age of Aquarius, only a rare few dreamed of physical immortality - eternal life in the same, but continually improved and transfigured flesh body. Others have believed in it only as a possibility for a few initiated Masters, the founders of the world's religions (some of them). Today, however, those who ponder such a possibility for themselves are increasing in number. More people are beginning to realize that physical immortality is actually the foundation of genuine religion. Yes, physical immortality-eternal life in the material sense-was the original cornerstone of all religions, worn away by the ravages of illusionary time, and replaced by false deathist dogma and doctrines. The Christian Bible says accurately that "God hath put eternity into the heart of man." And into the heart of woman too. Yet today's religions, and even the new occult movements, continue to sell the "glory of death" concept. During recent years there have been various attempts to break the stern and dreary deathist philosophy by portraying the experience of death as almost a fun thing, floating around like a BALLOON in the ethers , and gazing down on the discarded cocoon of the flesh body-or flying dreamily in and out and around the Moon or Pluto on a glittering silver cord, in what is intimated to be a kind of practice session for death. The "silver cord" is actually seen by the Third Eye as sparkling silver, possessing an unlimited stretch capacity, and is not only a visible cord-but also an audible (to the inner ear) musicalchord of extremely high frequency. In one of the incidents dramatized in the television mini-series Out on a Limb, actress Shirley MacLaine remarked that her own astral trip on her silver cord ended the instant she imaged "limitation," when she wondered if her silver cord would stretch far enough for her to actually touch the Moon she saw herself approaching. True. A thought of any kind of limitation instantly blows the fuse in all attempted magic, including the magical reality of physical immortality. All these attempts to erase the dread of death are admirably motivated. They're saying, in effect, "Don't be afraid. Dying is a marvelous trip. You'll love it!" But such images are impotent to defeat and permanently destroy death. They succeed only in making it a shade more palatable, and they certainly don't do anything to comfort the bereaved, those grief-stricken loved ones left behind when the dead go flying off into the cosmos on their silver cords. These silver-cord-astral-trips may occur during sleep, or in trance, under the proper conditions, but they are not "mini-deaths," and are not "dress rehearsals" for an inevitable and final "crossing over." By the way, it's interesting and meaningful to contemplate the similarity between the silver cord attached to the body while astral traveling (or dying) . . . the umbilical cord of the newborn infant, attached to its mother . . . and the cord attached between the mother ship (space capsule) and an astronaut landing on the Moon. The three experiences are closely related. Today's religious leaders on the stages of church, synagogue and television who are so cheerfully selling death as pie-in-the-sky, somewhere out there in the-great-by-and-by, having failed dismally to manifest the third and fourth lines of the Lord's Prayer: Thy Kingdom come, Thywill be done . . . on Earth, as itis in Heaven. They have not been successful in creating Heaven on Earth, and they never will be, the way they've been going about it. Religions rely upon the goodness of their various founding Immortals to bring about such a miracle. But it's not the Immortals who seeded their spiritual doctrines who cause the wars, sicknesses, disasters, personal misery and "man's inhumanity to man" (and animals) on Earth. These evils are caused by mortals, playing carelessly with their Free Will Tinker Toys. And the only way to end this hell on Earth (which, in case you haven't yet noticed, has always been its geographical location) is to turn all of Earth's mortals into immortals, because the process will not only "wipe away all tears from their eyes," as John prognosticated in Revelations, but will also remove all desire to be evil from their hearts and minds. "And there shall be no more death." The truth is that all mortals were once immortals. Even you. You only need to both remember and realize this for the battle to be won, the victory to be yours. Victory is the thought transformation resulting from comprehending that physical immortality-perpetual longevity, sans illness and aging- eternal, healthy, youthful life in your living flesh is not a fantasy, but a practical and attainable possibility. The Hindu Hatha Yoga Masters in India who have already achieved it (and there are more of them than you've ever dreamed) claim that at least half if not more of the people alive in the 1980s may learn how to live forever in continually increasing health and youthfulness, by simply the knowing of this truth, which will, in turn, bestow mastery over the physical body. Naturally, there are certain disciplines to follow, but the first step is a releasing of your religion-seeded loyalty to death. That takes immense effort, admittedly, but it's certainly worth a try, isn't it? You have nothing to lose and a lot to gain. And believe it or not, dying takes much more effort. Why? Because physical immortality is natural-and death is unnatural. Therefore, people need to exert so much (subconscious) effort to die that it causes illness and pain. Ask yourself if you choose to remain among the masses of humanity who have subjected themselves as slaves to a deathist theology that condemns them into finally sacrificing their bodies to dust-or to the extinguishing fire of cremation. To worship the grave, if you'll pardon the pun about such a serious issue, is a grave offense against both truth and happiness. The High Priests of deathist philosophy are the Life Insurance companies, who keep telling you that "the life span is . . ." and everyone accepts this illusionary number as gospel. In the time of Francis of Assisi, the imaginary "life span" was not much past forty, which is why they married at twelve and thirteen. In the time of Moses, it was around six hundred years, during the Civil War about fifty-five or sixty. Now they dictate that the arbitrary "life span," based, one presumes, on the age of people who have died each decade, is eighty. Obediently, then, in submissive follow-the-leader fashion, men and women check that illusionary double number on the calendar, and when they're getting close, make out their wills and wait to die. Someone once said that thoughts are angels, and some thoughts are, like this one: You are alive now, and so obviously your current and true life urges are stronger than your programmed death urges. As long as you continue to strengthen your life urges, and ignore your programmed death urges, you'll go on living. Read this thought over and over until you completely comprehend what it's saying. You die because you believe you must, and you believe it because your computer brain has been falsely programmed that it's a necessity. Not only has your brain been programmed, your mind and soul have both been subjected to mass hypnosis from parents, relatives, friends, radio, television, newspapers and magazines. You die because you're reacting and predictably responding to post-hypnotic suggestion. Your mind and soul have submitted to it (the soul more reluctantly)-but your Spirit (Overself, Higher Angel of your S-elf, the you-of-you) knows better. Ask the wise Guru of your own S-elf, and He or She will level with you about the myth of dying. Just the belief in death is enough to kill you, even without accident or disease. This is what medical people call "dying of nothing specific except old age." All deaths are suicides, do you realize that? Every single one. The only distinction is that, with some people, suicide is a subconscious choice-and with others it's a conscious choice......

However, if you're ever motioned to pull over by an officer of the law who accuses you of running a Red Light, confess immediately and contritely that you did run the light (if you did) -- or tell him courteously and add earnestly that you don't believe you're guilty (if you didn't run the light). It wouldn't be wise to explain to him that you can't be held fully responsible for following your subconscious urgings just because the people who created traffic lights were metaphysically color blind, unless you want a swift ticket and perhaps also a sanity hearing or sobriety test (unless the officer is a Pisces). You may be personally enlightened, but that doesn't mean the whole world is equally as illuminated, in particular the Police Department. * LINDA GOODMAN'S STAR SIGNS - FORGOTTEN RAINBOWS * IP: Logged |
