Rick's toast to Ilsa, "Here's looking at you, kid", used four times, is not in the draft screenplays, but has been attributed to something Bogart said to Bergman as he taught her poker between takes.

It was voted the fifth most memorable line in cinema in AFI's 100 Years…100 Movie Quotes by the American Film Institute.

Six lines from Casablanca appeared in the AFI list, the most of any film (Gone with the Wind and The Wizard of Oz tied for second with three apiece). The other five are:

"Louis, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship."—20th

"Play it, Sam. Play 'As Time Goes By'."—28th

"Round up the usual suspects."—32nd

"We'll always have Paris."—43rd

"Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine."—67th

Anyway, in a round-a-bout way I guess what I'm trying to say is that I think, as a couple, Linda & Sam had that "Bogie & Bacall" vibe.

My favorite picture of him. He looks like he just stepped out of a GQ magazine. I believe the photo is of Sam contemplating life before he left for the war.

THE YEAR OF THE CAT - AL STEWART & PETER WOODS

On a morning from a Bogart movie
In a country where they turn back time

You go strolling through the crowd like Peter Lorre
Contemplating a crime

She comes out of the Sun in a silk dress running
Like a watercolour in the rain
Don't bother asking for explanations
She'll just tell you that she came
In the Year of the Cat

She doesn't give you time for questions
As she locks up your arm in hers
And you follow 'till your sense of which direction
Completely disappears

By the blue tiled walls near the market stalls
There's a hidden door she leads you to
These days, she says, I feel my life
Just like a river running through
The Year of the Cat

Well, she looks at you so cooly
And her eyes shine like the Moon in the sea
She comes in incense and patchouli
So you take her, to find what's waiting inside
The Year of the Cat

Well, morning comes and you're still with her
And the bus and the tourists are gone
And you've thrown away the choice and lost your ticket
So you have to stay on

But the drum-beat strains of the night remain
In the rhythm of the new-born day
You know sometime you're bound to lose her
But for now you're going to stay
In the Year of the Cat

By the way...The Old Grey Whistle Test is a phrase that was coined in Tin Pan Alley and it refers to a method of predicting the popularity of a song.

TIME PASSAGES - Al Stewart & Peter White

It was late in December, the sky turned to snow
All round the day was going down slow
Night like a river beginning to flow
I felt the beat of my mind go
Drifting into time passages
Years go falling in the fading light
Time passages
Buy me a ticket on the last train home tonight

Well I'm not the kind to live in the past
The years run too short and the days too fast
The things you lean on are the things that don't last
Well it's just now and then my line gets cast into these
Time passages
There's something back here that you left behind
Oh time passages
Buy me a ticket on the last train home tonight

Hear the echoes and feel yourself starting to turn
Don't know why you should feel
That there's something to learn
It's just a game that you play

Well the picture is changing
Now you're part of a crowd
They're laughing at something
And the music's loud

A girl comes towards you
You once used to know
You reach out your hand
But you're all alone, in these
Time passages
I know you're in there, you're just out of sight
Time passages
Buy me a ticket on the last train home tonight

TimePassages astrological software was one of the vendors at The River of Stars main conference.

Of course, I had to ask...but Henry Seltzer, the software developer, said Al Stewart's song was not the inspiration for the name of the software.

No, I have not tried using the program yet, but I have read a few of the program's interpretations. I know for certain I read the interpretation for Moon in Taurus.

A LONG WAY DOWN FROM STEPHANIE - AL STEWART

Maid, truly I see
Now it must be a long way down
And with love's burnt shore
Must all dalliance hither
Crumble and wither

Oh strange,
Methought it strange...
Thou couldst deprive me of my CROWN
Thou cast upon me as LINDEN bears fruit of bitter strain

And I would go forsooth to the dragon's tooth
If thus a chance were gained
To resurrect that part of your wanton heart
To whose grave my own is chained

And hold, ere thou dost go
Were not thy moments gilded too?
And in honesty didst thou not measure for measure
Countenance pleasure?

Cold wert thou so cold
Lest thy mind be frozen too
And will not Spring be reborn

But might the Sun for the frost here
That all be not lost herein

And I would rather, zounds
It were hell's own hounds
Whose foul breath upon my face
Did portent my doom
Than to bear the gloom
Of a world stripped of thy grace

And so in truth I know
Yes it will be a long way down
And if go thou must
Ere we should meet accidental
Prithee be gentle
And though distant now
Perchance the hand of time may soothe

And though lost at six
If I should live to be SEVEN I might forget Stephanie

Dearest steward,
A long way down
Ere we didst meet accidental
And though distant now
Methought it strange
Whereon a Prince wast Crowned
Betwixt First avenue
SEVENth street
Entry
Thou didst perchance meet Stephanie

Our name has number Power...

STEPHANIE
345851515=37

from Star Signs

37
This number has a distinct potency of its
own. It's associated with an extremely
sensitive nature--good and fortunate
friendships--a strong magnetism with the
public, often in the area of the Arts--and
productive partnerships of all kinds. It
places an emphasis on love and romance, and
sometimes too much emphasis on sexuality.
Attitudes toward sex may be unconventional
(but this aspect may not be present). There
is a pronounced need for HARMONY in
relationships. Happiness and success are
more easily attained when in partnerships
with another rather than when operating
alone as a single individual.

which then equals

The Wheel of Fortune

10 is symbolized by Isis and Osiris. A
number of rise and fall, according to
personal desire. The name will be known for
good or evil, depending on the action
chosen. 10 is capable of arousing the
extreme responses of love or hate--respect
or fear. There is no middle ground between
honor or dishonor. Every event is self-
determined. 10 is the symbol of LOve and
LIght, which create all that can be
imagined, and also contains the code:
Image 10 Ordain. Image it, and it shall be.
Ordain it, and it will materialize. The
power for manifesting creative concepts into
reality is inherent, but must be used with
wisdom, since the power for absolute
creation contains the polarity power for
absolute destruction. Self-discipline and
infinite compassion must accompany the gift
of the former to avoid the tragedy of the
latter. Discipline must precede Dominion.
Unfortunately, some 10 people fail to
realize their power potential, and
consequently harbor deep-seated feelings of
frustration, causing them to feel
unfulfilled, and to occasionally behave in a
somewhat proud and arrogant manner to cover
such unnecessary feelings of inferiority.

which then equals
1
The Number 1 vibrates to the Sun. It
represents creativity, protection, and
benevolence. 1 is the number of original
action, the initiating basis of all other
numbers.

TRACK #9 ~ Samuel, Oh How You've Changed

And Sam's name...

SAMUEL, OH HOW YOU'VE CHANGED - AL STEWART

Most of the better bred
Woollen toys have gone to bed
And the TEDDY BEAR is a-sleeping in the cupboard
And the wooden soldiers all
And the rubber bouncing ball
Are list'ning to the tales of Mother Hubbard

But the fairy lights are dark
On the Christmas tree as restlessly
I stand here forgotten and alone
I've been too long on the floor,
I can't stay here any more
So Jenny won't you please take me home.

Oh the statues that I see
Are made out of blackest ivory
But I pass them by never guessing of their meaning
And a million voices cry
As I walk across the sky
Though it's restless here, why it's only in-betweening

For the JOURNEY that I'm on
Is incomplete so to my feet
I must rise now and travel on alone
Ah, but if you've got some time to spend
In between now and the end
Oh Jenny won't you please take me home?

Now almost every word that I've said that you have heard
Hides another thought left unspoken

And if I may not reach it through the gutter of my speech
Then it best be left unsaid than lie unbroken
And if you wish to see, then from time to time
Look in my eyes
Oh the gold is not far beneath the stone
If that will not say, it doesn't matter anyway
Jenny won't you please take me home.

quote:

I'll Take You Home Again, Kathleen is a popular song written by Thomas P. Westendorf in 1875. In spite of its German-American origins, it is widely mistaken to be an Irish ballad. Westendorf, then teaching at the reform school known as the Indiana House of Refuge for Juvenile Offenders in Hendricks County, Ind., wrote it – apparently – for his wife (who was, however, named Jennie).

It's in the form of an "answer" to a popular ballad of the time, "Barney, Take Me Home Again," composed by Westendorf’s close friend, George W. Brown, writing under the nom de plume of George W. Persley.
