This thread was begun at a time of blessed innocence, when population control was just a theory. Now that many environmental experts are openly calling for a cull on the population and there is evidence that this actually being carried out (via food shortages, weather manipulation and water poisoning etc.), people may begin to see why I question the wisdom of proclaiming immortality as a universal option.

Not sure if I believe in that conspiracy theory stuff about population control. But the Earth can accomodate about ten times its current human populace.

Our real problem is misallocation of resources.

Yes this concept is kind of cloudy to me too!
Are we talking about physical immortality or spirit immortality..?
As for me I consider physical immortality as a trait possesed by those whos image gets stamped in the lessons of history!which Both good and bad people can acquire!

When it comes to soul immortality! im of the opinion that it takes only a refined and purified soul to reach that stage!

so once the soul reaches that ultimate stage of immortality it can no longer be addressed as a soul! it dissolves into vaccum!

If physical immortality helps in reducing overpopulation then does soul immortality help in increasing over population??

well i think its a cycle..this era of human species will come to an end! doomsday is a must to allow other species to take birth!

rajji - usually maklhouf is referring to physical immortality...that's the very broad theme of this forum...
however, you raise an interesting point for me to ask you about - you don't believe that we are, at this moment, all immortal souls on a journey of discovery? what is your definition of the soul/spirit?

Emitres...personally i consider
Immortality as something which is the divine power given only to the hands of the creator.
everything that is born in universe has to die.Birth and death is a complementory cycle.Even stars and planets in the universe die. New planets and heavenly bodies replace the old ones.

When it comes to your question i do believe that we are souls and our life is nothing but a journey..however i do not consider us being immortal souls

Let us see the difference between a spirit and a soul.

ill try to explain below in detail about my perspective with regards to various sources..which coincides with my thoughts

The spirit is not synonomous with our soul nor is it the same as the Holy Spirit. We worship god with our spirit. The spirit of man is also likened to his heart.

Zechariah 12:1 states that 'the Lord....formed the spirit of man within him'

The spirit has three functions:

1. Conscience
2. Intuition
3. Communion

The conscience distinguishes right and wrong. Not through the influence of the knowledge stored in the mind, but is rather a spontaneous direct judgment of what god considers to be right and wrong.

Often reasoning will contradict our conscience. Reasoning what is right and what is wrong with the mind will lead to desception.

Intuition is not sensing with the mind. Intuition involves direct sensing independant of any outside influences. Its a sense of knowing without being able to reason that knowing with our minds.

The voice of the conscience and the voice of intuition is our guide through the rough seas of life.

Communion is worshipping god. The mind cannot worship god, because the mind can only worship that which it has reasoned to be reasonable.

Communion with god allows us to see with our spiritual eyes, the glory, the majesty and the goodness of god. It is with our spirit that we connect with god on a personal level. It is with this communion that we build a relationship with god.

The soul has three functions:

1. Volition
2. Intellect/Mind
3. Emotion

Volition is what we use to make descisions. Without it man would be a robot. With it we descide that we 'will' or 'we wont'.

The mind is what we use for thoughts, it is our intellect.

Emotion is what we like or dislike. Through it we express love or hate, feel joyful, angry, sad or happy.

A spirit that is infused with the holy spirit guides our volition, our mind and our emotions.

A spirit that is not infused with the holy spirit is guided by its soul. The will of a man, will override the will of his spirit. His soul will make descisions for his spirit. His soul will produce emotions that stiffle and hamper the spirit.

When the spirit is in control of the soul, then the spirit's conscience communicates what is right and what is wrong to the soul, which in turn directs the body to follow suit.

The spirit's intuitition communicates to his mind what it percieves, it moves the soul to action, which moves the body into action. The intuition of the spirit can tell the soul when there is something that needs to be said or done that is in accordance with gods will.

The spirits communion abilities makes the mind of man burst into songs of praise for god, it makes him hunger and thirst for god, it bears witness to the greatness of god. When the soul is inspired by the spirits communion it will bless, sing to , serve, feel united, honour and fear god.

When the soul is in control of the spirit, will instead numb the spirit. Resulting in a hard heart, a rebellious heart, a contradicting heart.

Guard your heart...for out of it springs all the issues of life. Guard your spirit.

AFrom a biblical perspective- it also considers soul is not immortal..

here is the link
http://mcdonaldroad.org/bible/study/im-soul.htm
http://www.sabbatarian.com/Content/Immortal.html
http://www.heavendwellers.com/hd_doctrine_of_immortal_soul.htm

"And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul." Genesis 2:7, K.J.V

Notice that man BECAME a living soul. It does not say that he RECEIVED a soul, but rather he BECAME a living soul. A human being therefore does not HAVE a soul, they ARE a soul. Two ingredients went into the creation of this living soul, the dust of the earth, and the breath of life. Stated as an equation, we could say,

DUST OF THE GROUND & BREATH OF LIFE = A LIVING SOUL

And finally some more food for thought...

When the body dies... it is this spirit that moves on from one life to another. For the spirit within...
the complete cosmic life cycle is one single journey of 8.4 million manifestations
(an earthly life cycle of 96.4 million years).
The crux of life is the liberation of this spirit from the cycle of birth and death.
The moment a human being gains enlightenment (kaivalya jnana) and finally salvation (moksha)...
the spirit regains its pure pristine original form. All dross within having removed... this spirit...
the soul atman within leaves for the kingdom of God (aka Vaikuntha in Hinduism)...
a point of no return! After gaining enlightenment and salvation...
every liberated spirit remains in the kingdom of God forever.
A point of no return! is the point of eternity!

Metropolitan Hierotheos says that man is different from the angels and animals because angels have a spirit and a soul but no body, and animals have a spirit and a body but no soul, only man has body, soul, and spirit.

“NO IMMORTALITY OF THE SOUL” SAYS THOMAS A. EDISON: In Fact, He Doesn’t Believe There Is a Soul — Human Beings Only an Aggregate of Cells and the Brain Only a Wonderful Machine, Says Wizard of Electricity!

hhmm... some interesting theories... i don't share your view that there is a difference between the soul and the spirit... i believe the words can and have been used interchangeably...
much of what you ascribe to "soul" activity i would suggest is actually brain activity which can operate through the soul and mind... the biggest issue i believe most of us have is our inability to connect our mind and soul, allowing them to work jointly for our betterment...
and i most definitely do not support the supposed scientific view represented in the link you provided - again, interesting thoughts but nothing i can agree with...
but i do thank you for explaining your view points and your beliefs...

that part of your message i understood maklhouf - i was mostly wondering why population control ( theoretical or not ) would cause you to question immortality as an option...

Anyone can choose immortality. But not everyone will. People are the servants to death. They almost worship it.

i think if you remove the word "almost" you would have it absolutely right... i find it astonishing that there are people in their early 30's creating "bucket lists"... wth?
and the constant chatter about growing older and making sure you have plans in place for when the time comes.... sigh
one of the reasons we want to move far far away from family - it's bloody depressing to listen to...

It is remarkable how many people seem to regard the purpose of life to be to produce children. Maybe people who want children should automatically be regarded as bad parents,

Wow, I've NEVER thought in these terms before!
I have NEVER wanted children, knew when I was tiny exactly what I wanted from life, an have been able to do it.
I have like 5 planets in Aquarius (OF COURSE! haha) and am totally comfortable and happy having a lifestyle that is outside the norm.
And I VERY strongly believe that sex is NOT a toy and there are huge negative consequences on every level for the misuse of sexual energy.
The encouragement toward supposed "consequence-free sex" is because it's very ensnaring and distracting. It's a great way to control people.

I agree so much.

I'm very strongly childfree myself and have known that I never want kids for many years. I get a lot of ignorant, condescending, stupid, and judgmental comments on it, but at the end of the day, it's my life and I'm the boss.

I also agree with you about there being huge consequences for misuse of sex and also have similar feelings about the societal glorification of "consequence-free sex". To me, there is nothing at all "liberating" or "free" about being a slave to your body. It's imprisoning.

I have to disagree on this one (yes, I know this person is 'unregistered').

I don't find it irresponsible for a woman to be able to drop off a newborn at a hospital or baby box and walk away, no questions asked. Better to do that than to put it in a dumpster or something, or to try to raise it and be an abusive/neglectful parent.

This may be a window into how I'm wired, (LOL!), but whenever I get any weirdness of any kind from anyone about anything, I just figure they are jealous!!! LOL again!!!
I don't get too much weirdness about my "blissfully childless by choice" status.
What I DO get is people telling me privately that they are envious of my freedom to pursue the glamourous life I always desired. I never miss an audition or a performing opportunity, and that's by my design.
Having kids is a BIG job and I think people should really want to do it, and know ahead of time what they are getting into.
Plus, don't wait too long; as I've taught a lot of dance classes, and there are way more kids with "issues" of various kinds now, and they ALL had an older mother!!!
Yeah, sex is dangerous; which is , of course, part of its appeal! (LOL!) The misuse of sex also AGES people at warp speed, just to name one consequence. (Questioning what society tells us to do, esp. under the guise of what is "cool," is always a good idea! =))
The "leave the kid at the hospital" thing is a double-edged sword to me. It IS better than the alternatives, but there will also be people for whom it is just more encouragement to be sexually irresponsible.
The whole culture now espouses this idea that life has no real consequences, and someone else will come and take care of people's problems for them. It's an interesting shift, but it's not correct!
The more I go, the more I see that everyone just sets up their lives with their choices, so I don't feel bad for people's consequences.
(Can you tell I'm ruled by Saturn?! LOL!!!)
