THANKS ALL YA'LL!!!I wasn't around @ the time to get this (doing a Habitat for Humanity "Alternative Spring Break" in West Virginia...that is, building a house ), but thank you for all of your well wishes. It was absolutely awesome - and it worked out that Wed. (my b-day) was a half-day of work, so we went hiking @ Seneca Rocks and then out for dinner. The whole area's unbelievable; I've found the land that stalks my dreams...I was so happy just being there in the mountainous woods with rushing streams around me. And my teammates were all wonderful - no one could've asked for a better group to spend a week with. I'll look at this greatly-changed-inna-week website after I get some sleep; I'm beat. Peace to you ------------------ We shall not cease from exploration And the end of our exploring Will be to arrive where we started And to know the place for the first time. -T.S. Eliot

It was great! Now I can use a skill saw and a saws-all and can patch drywall - we were re-building a torn-up house, and I and a few others focused primarily on restoring a bathroom that was terribly rotted-out (we had to strip it down to just beams and then scab boards to most of 'em). We got to work with the person that will most likely get it (she's putting in "sweat equity" hours), and she was great and we gave her one of our ASB tees because we came to consider her our teammember. The only downstroke to the whole trip was that I got sick the last day (riding over mountains in a big blue van is not fun when you're ill), but I just got about 12 hours of sleep and am now feeling better ----- Add - OHOHOH!!! The best part of all - Some Georgetown students got their rented (rear-wheel drive) SUV stuck in the mud, and I and another girl went right down and saying, "Here, here - put these boards by your tires - they'll add traction," and "Hey ya'll - have you tried rocking it yet?" And they gave up, "Well, would you like to drive this?" I said, "Heck, yeah," and got them out in no time flat with a huge rooster tail of mud streaming behind. My lil' latent streak of class warfare got a kick out of that.

Oh, and ohmylawd, I found where Bretherens roost. My Mom's fam is/has been historically Bretheren (a liberal Anabaptist sect), and while there are a few scattered around here, they are all over the place up there. I got some really neat pics of cool little churches.Heeey - maybe that's why I'm such a peacenik: it must be in the blood. Oh, oh, oh - and I met a few others that from that area that said, "Oh, yeah - I have Blackfoot in my family," and my fam's always said that, but I thought that it must be a mistake b/c, you know, Blackfoot Native American's are from the Northern Plains, but this has got me thinking: Maybe it's just a widely-held mistake of names, or maybe this guy that I know is right: a lot of the peeps that were sent East for "school" as the west was colonized/conquered settled in the mountains b/c they were both nearby and out of the way (which seems more and more likely since my family also says that it has Crow in it, and a few up in WV that I talked to said that they have Soiux (sp?) blood). Another post rife with questions to follow in the not-too-distant future... IP: Logged |
