Omaha Zoo Testing DNA of Mystery Apes (...)The apes, which stand five to six feet tall and have feet nearly 14 inches long, were first documented last year by primatologist Shelly Williams in a forest in the northern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo (news - web sites). They have bodies similar to those of gorillas, but generally the facial characteristics of a chimpanzee. Williams said the animals sleep on the ground at night like gorillas, but eat a fruit-rich diet like chimpanzees. "I can't speculate yet as to what they are. Their behavior is so unusual. It's a puzzle. ... I feel like Dr. Doolittle in the land of Oz," said Williams, who has captured some video of the animals but no photographs. Because of their size and elusiveness, the apes have no predators — not even poachers hunt them, Williams said. With no fear of lions, leopards or hyenas, the large animals hoot at the moon as it rises and sets, which is extremely unusual for apes, she said.(...) http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=624&ncid=624&e=1&u=/ap/20 030922/ap_on_sc/mystery_apes

yep, maybe they evolved recently. Good, I hope they stay elusive. I hate hearing how gorillas, chimps and orangutans get caught in the crossfire of rebel fighting. I love apes and monkeys with a passion. LOL...really, I have a collection and usually but a new monkey on every business trip or vacation that I take. IP: Logged |

Tres Big Foot. Actually, they sound a lot like some of the pre-human species that were around after Austrolopithicus and before Homo habilus. P. robustus, perhaps? The "lion killer" thing difinitely makes them seem like hominids. Hmmmmm. Very interesting.IP: Logged |

It could so be one of the later hominoids - I mean, 6 feet tall w/ a face like a chimp...sounds vaguely familiar to me.I just love how our world consistently proves more odd than most people'd dream IP: Logged |

I wish they'd find a new continent or something. That would be so cool!!! IP: Logged |

I wish they'd decide to leave the apes alone.I'm not impressed with the poaching (killing) of mountain gorillas, et al. I'm no Luddite-type, but I have little confidence in humanity's ability to protect a species from itself. Thanks for the news, proxieme -- I may have this view but I'm glad you posted the article.
