Ok.....forgive me for sounding really stupid, but where is the animal killing in a pumpkin pie? Or any of the traditional Thanksgiving deserts? Perhaps, the eggs? Please enlighten.
Thanks

hello,

vegan means no animal products are consumed, used, or worn. the lifestyle does not entirely mean no killing.

traditional recipes for pumpkin pie have eggs, white sugar (usually whitened with animal bones), and evaporated milk.

i've hosted several holidays with vegan or vegetarian menus. most everyone likes the variety and creativity involved in the servings.

the holidays are celebrated in spirit for my friends and me, the food is the gesture of sharing. to each their own, as i do prefer to celebrate the essence of these special days. i do not believe these holidays are based on killing and eating animals, as this is bit too superficial of a meaning to me, but that is just my opinion.

love,

a.

Amy is right---there are lots of levels to being a vegetarian, and her definition of vegan is dead on. She's right about white sugar, too.

I'm a vegetarian who sometimes eats dairy, and on rare occassions eats seafood (but I always feel guilty!). My family and friends have always been kind enough to accomodate me.

scorpiogirl, I believe there is a thread in Health and Healing that has lots of links to vegan sites, including those with recipes, if you'd like to check it out.

I had pumpkin cheesecake once....MmmmmMMMMmmmmMMm.

There is an interesting cook book called, The Voluptous Vegan. I read that it's high-end gourmet. If you are daring and explorative, it sounds like a good pick.

Vegetarian Planet by Didi Emmons is very good too. I have this and have cooked numerous dishes from it. The Vegan Chocolate Almond cake is wuenderbar!

I also have The Enchanted Broccoli Forest by Mollie Katzen. The book has more old world receipes in it. I like it a lot, but found that there are more lacto-ovo vegetarian recipes. The vegan recipe I liked best was the Indian Pulao. Super yum with carrots, spices, coconut milk, raisins, and rice.

I'm on the Low carb diet (lost 35 lbs so far), and can't have pie, but even before that I didn't like Punpkin Pie.

I don't think those holidays mentioned are about the killing of animals, scorpiogirl. At all. Meat or no meat they are about getting together with family and or friends.

Lanny, which version do you follow? I've been lowcarbing almost a year now, pretty much atkins, but I can weasle in a carrot or two now and then. Great work on your loss!
I invented a chocolate cake that takes 5 Minutes total (made in the micro) that tastes just like real cake with the same texture...if you want it, let me know.

Nackie (who btw has also always found pumpkin pie disgusting)

Nackie, I would very much like the recipe for the cake. I'm not sure what version I'm on. Its a modified Atkins I guess. I limit my carb intake to 10 to 15 a day.

Its not hard to stay on the diet, its just boring at times. The more recipes that I can find for variety helps.

I've heard that it helps to eat regular on weekends, but stay low carb during the week. Know anything about that?

I have a couple of low carb snack recipes if anyone wants them, email me at LLLOG@yahoo.com.

Okay.....at the risk of sounding really dumb, again.....how are animal bones used in refining sugar? Please enlighten me.

What I meant when I said theese hollidays are based of killing and eating animals is the habit, tradition, we have in sweden.

The eastern, there's egg. the children's painting egg, then they eat it. There's also alot of fish food.

For Christmas the food is everything from the pig; ham, homemade sausage, ribs etc. and fisch again.

We don't have thanksgiving here but I've been told the turkey represent the first food the settlers get in the new country. Once again an old tradition.

I'm aware of the nice in meeting up with familly and friend, but most people in my surroundings eat meat. Even if I'm bringing special food with me, there's not the same.

Hi Lanny,
you take:
1 Tbsp butter

melt that in a small glass bowl, about 20-30 secs in the micro.

Add in:
1 egg
40 grams ground almonds (about 3 Tbsp? 4?)
a bit of vanilla
sweetner for about 4 tbsp sugar
1 tbsp cocoa powder
a really little bit of baking soda (not even 1/4 of a teaspon)
A good tbsp of heavy cream

Mix that all together in your glass bowl with the butter, and nuke for about 1-1.5 minutes of high--don't over cook it, it gets tough. I use a pyrex salad bowl and it gives me a little cake, 2-3 servings. Not much carbs in it, I think maybe 2-3 per serving. Has the same consistency as cake and tastes really good! No one believes it comes from the micro lol

Bon apetit!
Nackie

Well I am sorry for that scorpiogirl since you are so senstive to animals the holidays must be hard. Yes I enjoy eating turkey on thanksgiving, but no matter what I am eating, the holiday is truly symbolic of friends and family getting together...it has nothing to do with turkey.

Remember, what you look for you will see.
