i usually don't drink i find i have a hard enough time holding onto reality without it. But everynow and again i forget myself and indulge. I usually only drink when i am around others who drink, because i am shy and self concious, but with a little help from a few rum and cokes i am more open. I find it fun every once in awhile. It will only become a problem if you let yourself let it become a problem.

Thanks for all of your varied responses to this topic everybody. It was really great to read all of your different views on all of this.

I asked about it because for certain reasons, I have really not had very much opportunity to take part in social drinking, although I have experimented with a few liquors in private on my own at home though.

I am on the fence on this question for the most part.

Usually, I like to know that I am totally alert and straight in my mind. I also like to know that is the case with anyone whom I am spending time with as well. So, that wish of mine for total clearheadedness on all of our parts sort of eliminates alcohol as a possibility to make use of for the obvious reasons which you can think of, lol.

But then again after all of that, I do wonder if I'm just being too strict in that line of thinking and making too big of a deal out of drinking to "loosen up" though.

So, it helps to hear all of your thoughts about why you feel that people really do use alcohol and things.

Thanks so much again for all of your great input about this question!

PlayfulPondering...do only what feels right to you. Do not succumb to any pressure.

I drink because I love the taste of a fine red wine, or the kick of a good margarita. Sometimes, yeah, you loosen up. But that doesn't mean I advocate it for anyone else.

If being totally alert is your highest priority, then you have already made your choice.

Years ago, i would have a few too many drinks, being a rebellious teenager, also in my twenties.

In my "adult" (what a hoot that is) years, drinking is not for me. If if could go bad, it would at my house. How lucky i am that i cannot drink alone -- believe me, i have tried. I could count on one hand how many drinks i have had this year -- that bottle of rum is waiting for rum balls this Christmas tho (some will laff when i tell ya i have had it for over 2 years now and it's more than half full)

All my life i have been around alcoholics, except my Mother. Both fathers, all 3 brothers, the husband (was a closet drunk i found out too late), most "boyfriends" and most "girlfriends."

Recently, a so called friend(visited from out of state) did not even drop by to see me as she loves her vodka and knows i don't care to drink -- I still see how high up the ladder of importance it is to some. Sad event.

I found this, and thought it would be of interest to Paras.
Okay, so the topic is ever-debatable, and I don't mean to beat a dead horse, I just thought he might like to read how similar/disimilar we all are.

After a wicked day of shearing llamas, being kicked & banged about, I`m washing the dust out of my throat and soothing some very jangled nerves with an icey vodka and squirt I earned this one today

pixie, you little pot-stirrer you! A woman after my own heart!

Juni, when I sit down later to do some editing, I'll pour myself a little whiskey with lemon and honey. On ice. Yum.

We're all colors in the rainbow of life.
Long live the difference.

I love wine.
I drink full bodied, ruby red, spicy, cherry, plummy, damson, intense wines. I love the taste and the aromas. A good glass of wine fills my senses like a wonderful symphony ...Mmmmm Yummy!

Truly the nectar of the Gods....

I hope I've not given you the impression I over indulge. I certainly do not. That would just spoil the whole experience.

Gia, me too. I love wine, it's almost always my drink of choice. Good red wines. I'm not a fan of white. Earlier in the week a friend brought me some wine from her trip to Germany, very light blush. It's nice...but...gimme the deep dark reds.

A nice little wine buzz is an awesome thing, but no, I don't like to be drunk either.

I'm not allowed alcoholic drinks, with the exception of spirits - so drink Baileys because the cream in the liqueur results in the least "liverish" effect. I always regret it afterwards though, even after only a couple of glasses, the next morning I feel like ****, and as though I have killed a couple of million brain cells. It does make me a bit more relaxed when I am REALLY depressed (which fortunately doesn't happen very often), but, I'm afraid, doesn't address the problem. However, in making me more relaxed, it probably prevents me from doing some incredibly stupid things. That is usually my sole reason for drinking. I never drink otherwise, don't feel the need.

I think alcohol is fine in moderation. Two nights ago some friends and I enjoyed a really fruity, delicious German Riesling. I love red & white. I love beer too, a good dirty martini now and then, maybe a gin & tonic with lime in the heat of summer...and to top it off a delicious glass of port at the end of a good meal.

One thing I don't like are spirits. I LOVE the way they look (scotch, cognac, brandy etc.), but absolutely hate the taste. Ok, whiskey I can stomach once in a while.

I don't drink anymore ,use to in my early teens. Parents and their friends very big problems with boozes, bad news. Almost every weekend we have friends out here in the countryside and have many nites with big barbecue, bombfire, plenty of eats, and yes my friends drink and have a great time out here.We didn't have anyone out here that can't hold their own and if we did ,I would tell them not to come again. They always stay the nite, if not camp with tents. We have some very happy campers! The only time I don't like them drinking is when their out on a ran with the Quads. Too each their own!

i think red wine is wonderful too.

but after having read the works of Linda Goodman i no longer drink alcohol of any kind.

she taught me the true spiritual reality of non-substance use and non-meat eating. her truth rings so clear.

i do occasionally drink non-alcoholic beer and wine.

well, actually, although i avoid herbal tinctures, such as echinacea, made with alcohol, i did concede to using Bach flower essences, made with brandy. the doses are such small amounts though, i don't know if it actually counts as consuming alcohol, although i should mention that i do take them. i would like to find the essences made with vegetable glycerine instead of alcohol.

I don't drink often, as both of my biological parents were/are alcoholics.. and a lot of others in my family too.

I do enjoy a nice glass of wine or two from time to time. I also enjoy going out to the club with my girls and drinking Cosmos. A couple drinks, some pool, a dance floor... that's a recipe for a good time!

But.. yeah.. I try to keep drinking to a minimum. There are other things I'd rather do than get drunk

People drink it for many reasons, and none of them good. Ethyl alcohol has no positive effect on a human being whatsoever. The dizzy "good" feeling that accompanies small dosages of it is absolutely nothing compared to the harm it does one's body -- and even worse, one's Spirit. No, I do not condemn those who have a glass of wine after dinner; in fact, I don't condemn those who drink more than that, either. But I truly feel sorry for them, because they laugh off the seriousness of what they're doing. Even a few drinks can alter someone's personality enough that they will do or say things they regret. No one is immune to it.

So, for myself, who once loved to chug a fifth of Southern Comfort, personally, I don't drink any alcohol at all. I say, if someone really can't resist the desire for an artificial hit of feeling-good-ness, smoke a joint. Least harmful drug on the planet, and no hangover either.

What I have just written is based on many years of direct experience with alcohol, both in myself and in other people.

My thoughts, mmmkay?
