Are there any Greek-speakers or anyone who knows about Greek (the language). I was wondering if modern-day Greek speakers could speak and understand Ancient Greek, like English and Old English.

Hi Silverbells,

I speak fluent modern Greek. I'm half Greek born in Athens Greece Dec. 1959 I'm unsure of the time but think it was the early hours of the morning. Any readings or insights would be appreciated. I've had a REALLLY strange life and would like some explanations if poss.

Ancient Greek is very different apart from the odd words, almost impossible for me to understand. Language has a way of evolving you know. I also speak Portuguese which is Latin based but also has some Greek words in it which is most interesting.

I'm sure you'd find experts trained in ancient Greek somewhere on the web if you tried. Why were you asking?

Hi Gia the reason that I asked about the language is because I had begun to study Classical Greek and I wanted to know if it would have given me a better understanding to learn Modern Greek. Since you say that that they are so different, I suppose it has little importance unless I wanted to begin an immediate study in linguistics or something.

For your birth information, I'm really not versed in reading and interpreting a chart. If you would like your chart done there is a website: www.astro.com. You go to free charts and have yours done. Also, you could go to the astrology forum and ask for interpretations on your completed chart. I think that astrojunkie, and, Lanny do chart interpretations. But yes, go to the astrology forum and create a thread there for your question so that people can see what you want to know.

Silverbells.
Some words are the same. I did biblical study once and managed to understand more than I thought I would. I think perhaps a person who has been classically trained might find even more similiarities. It is my third language, basically picked up because of my father is Greek and also because we travelled back and forth on holiday trips as children. I think it's often dialect that throws me off too. I remember going to a classical play once and I understood only every fourth word. Sorry that I'm not able to give you better advice. I do think classically trained people do have an advantage though. Look at Latin and French, Spanish and even Portuguese. I found learning Portuguese a breeze cause of my Greek. I'm sure I did because of some Latin / Greek similarities.

Blessings.

No, that is a help. I met this guy in the bookstore who was telling me that Classical, Ecclesiastical and Modern are wildly different. I had decided to give Greek a rest though and then I thought that I should pick up Latin because it would be much easier because Latin and English share a lot of words and it sounded easy...man oh man.

Thank You, you are helpful.
