Nope. I'm purely tech-support and noooo one's on campus today.*cries* Juni - Yeah, it's not been that bad. I've done a lot of...reading. And all you have to do to get in on the easy money is know how to hook up LCD projectors. IP: Logged |

Hey Prox, can I ask you a techie question? I don't know how computer-techie you are, but I keep getting an windows error box whenever I sign out of an internet explorer window. The box says Qttask up in the left corner of the box with the windows 4 color square emlbem beside it, and the text in the box says "this program has performed and illegal operation and will be shut down. If the problem persists contant the vendor" But sometimes it says "shut down all programs and restart your computer" at the bottom of the message instead of the "contact vendor" one. Then when I click the "close" button in the message box, the stupid message box wont' close. It won't go away, no matter how many times I click the close button. But it still lets me do everything on my computer. Like, right now, I'm typing this post and submitting it while that message box is still up, but I dragged it out of the visable screen range so I can ignore it. But do you have any clue why it's doing that?IP: Logged |

hey I used to be in the tech support area meeself. I can relate about the boredom issue..I did tech support for a financial website, wherein I helped people make sure their browsers were set up properly..I had to work on Thanksgiving last year and lemme tell you..that was totally pointless. No one in the call center got a single call all day long. I got lots of websurfing in working there. *sigh* I do miss the easy money now and again.Anyhow..I was thinking maybe I could help with the problem, lioneye. If the virus scan didn't turn up anything, then my questions would be.. What version of windows and what version of Internet Explorer do you have? (To find version of IE- At the top of your browser, go to the help menu..the last item on the menu should be 'about internet explorer'. Click on that and the screen that pops up should tell you the version.) I ask these things because I'm thinking that perhaps, if you don't have it already and you have Win98 or newer, then you could upgrade your IE to version 6 and that may solve the problem. On the job, I found people with this issue often have just a slightly corrupted IE 5.0 or 5.5 and the upgrade solved it. Of course you could also try using Netscape..it's a free download and I've found some people really like it alot better then Internet Exploder. Just some thoughts, hope they help. IP: Logged |

Then after a period of time, the darn thing REconnects to the server How can I stop the automatic reconnection? I`m on dial up & it keeps the phone line tied up when it does it Thanks any help here is welcome. juniperb ------------------ If having a soul means being able to feel love and loyalty and gratitude, then animals are better off than a lot of humans. ~James Herriot IP: Logged |

What's a good virus scan program? Where can I download it?Harpyre, I've got Windows 98 and IE version 6. I was hoping your solution would solve it, but no luck. It's not quite that simple. IP: Logged |

Harpyr! (I know nothing about browsers...my tech support skills are actually pretty limited to campus equipment.)Lioneye - Hrm. I get a free copy of Norton, being a student; but here're some pages that lists some free ones: http://freebies.about.com/cs/freeantivirus/index.htm?terms=anti-virus http://www.thefreesite.com/Free_Software/Anti_virus_freeware/ http://www.freebyte.com/antivirus/ The fact that it wants you to restart waved my virus flag, but that doesn't mean that that's necessarily it. Many viruses/worms disguise their effects as system processes, but this could just be an error message that I haven't run across yet.

Ok, I downloaded and ran Norton/Symantics free 15 day trial virus scan/protection program, and I'm happy to announce a clean bill of health for my PC. No viruses detected WHEW!! But I'm thinking the QTTask is something to do with the Quick Time program. Why is it running in the background anyway? Shouldn't it only open when I want to open a file with it? So, what I did for now is just control/alt delete, then selected QTTask in the window, and closed it. So far no error message. Should I delete Quick Time? Could it be corrupted?P.S.Thanks for the links, and the suggestion Prox!! lHarpyre, you too. IP: Logged |

I'm better w/ hardware... but, I'll talk to my cousin. He does comp support @ the Pentagon and'll have an answer.Juniperb - I'll ask my cousin on that one, too. It sounds like it's just your connection settings; you probably have 'em set to "Automatically Connect". IP: Logged |

Quoth my cuz: "I don't know how computer-techie you are, but I keep getting an windows error box whenever I sign out of an internet explorer window. The box says Qttask up in the left corner of the box with the windows 4 color square emlbem beside it, and the text in the box says "this program has performed and illegal operation and will be shut down. Like, right now, I'm typing this post and submitting it while that message box is still up, but I dragged it out of the visable screen range so I can ignore it. But do you have any clue why it's doing that?" - qttask refers to quicktime, a program developed by apple that lets you view movie files that are in quicktime format. without seeing this person's computer in person, my best advice would be to have the person uninstall quicktime (start-->settings-->control panel-->add/remove programs), reboot, and reinstall it (if he/she needs it) from http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/. "When I disconnect from my server, I leave the computer on with moniter turned off. Then after a period of time, the darn thing REconnects to the server How can I stop the automatic reconnection? I`m on dial up & it keeps the phone line tied up when it does it" - most likely their connection settings are screwy. again, i'd need to see it in person. when they're in a browser window, have them go to tools-->internet options-->connections tab and make sure that "always dial my default connection" is selected. and have them make sure it's dialing the right number. then have them select the "settings" tab in the connections window, then select "properties" and/or "advanced" from the selections and have them make sure that the "redial attempt" option is either turned off or is configured to however they want (don't know what they want). that's my best guess considering i can't see the problem from here. Yaay Aries Cousins! P.S. Lioneye - You probably have (unbeknownst to you) Quicktime set for start-up with your PC. If so, check the little line of icons on the bottom right of the very bottom of your screen. If you see the Quicktime icon there, it's running. IP: Logged |

Hey Prox & Aries cuz thanks a bunch. I`ll give it a shot!!!! Lioneye, you can here to get a free scan: http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp (a free indepth scan.) Trend Micro is an excellent company. Why you ask? Because they have a great support system with real people, they don`t or get annoyed with me & my screw ups & weird questions. juniperb ------------------ If having a soul means being able to feel love and loyalty and gratitude, then animals are better off than a lot of humans. ~James Herriot IP: Logged |

House Call is the best on the market. It's free, and once scanned, it deletes even the nastiest viruses at the touch of a button. ------------------ "Never mentally imagine for another that which you would not want to experience for yourself, since the mental image you send out inevitably comes back to you." So, should I dump Norton and try House Call?Isn't it bad to download then delete stuff alot? Doesn't it wear out your pc's memory or something like that? Yup, the quicktime icon is displaying on the bottom tool bar. Stupid thing keeps freezing up when we're using MSN now. *Why?! WHY!!!???* IP: Logged |

Do you defrag, Lioneye? If you delete a lot of stuff or move it around (or even if you don't) defraging helps a lot. I think about it kind of like an oil change in your car. You don't see the problems that it prevents, but without it, the whole engine can go down.IP: Logged |

To go further, I highly recommend the purchace of their products. I`ve had it forever and never had a virus and I`ve been bombarded with the darn things. Currently they have PC Cillin 2004 and its upgradeable every year for a few bucks. It automatically updates their newest files and thats a timesaver as well as a protective measure. A wise investment!! juniperb PS nope, I have NO stock in the company ------------------ If having a soul means being able to feel love and loyalty and gratitude, then animals are better off than a lot of humans. ~James Herriot IP: Logged |

Must buy scrolly mouse, but I'm too cheap right now. (money going elsewhere)Can anyone give me a rundown of keyboard shortcut keys for the net? How do you access the File Edit View etc functions?
