A Blessing From a Friend of Mine:"Corri - Congratulations, may your children all be as easily amused as you are." <-- The statue that sparked that comment...c'mon! It's of a Boll Weevil! IP: Logged |

The boll weevil (the bug that the lady's holding) devastated cotton crops in this part of Alabama back at the turn of the century...but they decided that it was a good thing, since cotton's quite hard on the soil and they had become much too much dependent on it. Instead of cotton, farmers in this area decided to focus on peanuts (which replenish the soil), and this is now one of the top peanut-growing regions in the country. To thank the pesky bug, a statue in honor of the boll weevil was erected in Enterprise, AL....and my friend was amazed at how easily amused by that statue (in the county adjacent mine) I am... My retort was: "C'mon! It's a statue of a Boll Weevil! How is that not GREAT?" I just wanted to share a picture of that fabulous monument...I mean, how often are you going to see a statue of a bug? That just cracked me up, Proxieme. You can't imagine how long it's been since I have thought about Boll Weevils. As LionEye said, there aren't any in Canada."When I was a little bitty baby My mama would rock me in the cradle in them old cotton fields back home..." Who wouldn't laugh at a statue of a Boll Weevil? IP: Logged |
