I'm very careful about getting too much sun--don't want wrinkles!! Vanity, I know, but so is tanning.I like my creamy skin, but sometimes would like my legs to have a bit of color when wearing shorts, skirts. Anyone know of any sunless tanners that actually work well, don't look orange or streak? And it seems that after you use them for a while, they make your skin look really nasty. I'm not interested in the expense of going to those new salons where they paint you. IP: Logged |

Hi Trillian, Well, I am fortunate in that I do have a base tan..hee hee..but since moving out East, I am not in the sun as much as I used to be and I feel a bit pale. So I bought that Banana Boat Sunless tan. I LOVE IT. I use the deepest tan and I have noticed that it blends well with my skin - and creates a nice golden brown. Normally my skin - when I am tan has a bit of red / gold in it - but this works just as well. I needed darker base because I am going to Arizona in June to spend time at my dad's at at Apache Lake - I didn't want to burn...and I do love having a nice dark tan - but I don't want to get wrinkles or cancer. Soooo vain..LOL One thing I noticed about ALL of the sunless tan creams - they do have a weird smell - just a hint of something icky. Anyone else notice that? IP: Logged |

Calgon just came out with one which smells wonderful! I don't know if you have this in America, but NeoStrata has one that smells very much like almonds. yum. Also a beautiful, streak free ( provided you rub it well enough) instant deep tan. Exfolliate first, for the best result. Apply it sparingly around thicker skin and the hairline, always extend it afterwards, to the top of your hands as well ( just a wee bit) so it doesn't end in a 'sleeve'. If you don't get the right colour immediately, re-apply. Instant sunless tanner/bronzers are the best, because you can see the results instantly, and they still develop more after.(two-four hours after) Invest in an application mitt. It not only saves your palms, but it makes the application velvety and perfect and streak free. Easier too., Plus, they are re-usable and you can throw them in the wash. Seriously.. from one who knows!!! Enjoy!Oh, Sally Hansen just came out with an instant, spray on bronzer for the legs.. not semi permanent at all, it is water resistent, but will wash off that same day. It is for those occasions when you want nicely coloured legs, but pantyhose won't do. Also, Rimmel has an instant one. IP: Logged |

I've heard raves about neutragena build a tan, but I tried it after exfoliating and still ended up streaky. Also, it came off when I sweat. yuck!IP: Logged |

You have to try an applicator mitt. They work great and improve the efficiency of any self-tan product. It is, after all, all in the appication. It's a good investment, simply because you can have it indefinately ..... sure, it's a little stained, but it has purpose. Just throw the thing in the wash.IP: Logged |

You can get a San Tropez tan from a salon, or you can order the products online and do it yourself at home. I got one done, and it made me very dark. You have to leave it on for 4 hours, it looks like you just took a bath in gravy, but then when you wash it off it's completely streak free, and gets darker if you keep moisturizing. It will last about 10 days if you don't scrub too hard in the shower. It's won't leave you orange, and if you have sensitive skin, like I do, it won't give you rashes or dry your skin out. That's the best one I can suggest...IP: Logged |

I find it odd that anyone would place such importance on the color of her skin, to the point of covering it with chemicals to unnaturally change it.IP: Logged |

Blah blah blah... you know what? To each their own. I find it odd that anyone would have an adverse opinion to something so superficial that they'd want to be all opinionated on a perfectly fine thread...... EVERYTHING is chemical. The active ingredient oxidizes with the air and clings to the dead skin cells on the surface of your skin. It doesn't enact permanent change..Oh well, I guess you'll grow old gracefully, with no even vegetable dyes for your hair, too.....? So maybe I am harsh.. well, I am hungovr and off to work. blah! So I am being overwrought as usual. *raspberry* IP: Logged |

The use of cosmetics is ancient. Nothing odd about it. Unnatural? Eh. It's 'unnatural' to cut hair, or bathe (the modern concept of cleanliness has not existed through time), or build websites...what's 'natural' about a website? In my book, everything that exists is sanctioned by its very existence. The Light, The Dark, and everything in between. They're all here as one. And if I wanna have dark skin for a day or two, why bother wasting time judging what's important to me? Vanity? So what. I love me with paint, and I love me without paint. And hey, maybe the desire for a different color of skin is one small step in healing a hurt...ya never know. I would submit that few of us want to live a 'natural' life. I like my car, and my blow dryer...I like being able to fly w/o wings to Europe...

Me too!! ( yours, not mine, .) I have been doing some exploration in the name of research not vanity. *ahem*So... Just thought I'd weigh in on L'Oreal's new instant tanner/bronzer.... WOWOWOW!!!! So far so good! It went on beautifully ( I chose the kind that had an instant bronze glow, complete with subtle sparkles ( hubby's not gonna like that when I tell him.. I use it on him too, as he has major broken capillaries on his back from sun damage...and I know better, so I don't let him bake himself anymore *makes whip sound*snicker*)ANYWAY...... So far, it smells heavenly, spread evenly, already a nice glow, and will develop in an hour.. I'll let you know in a few days, once I layer and buld up the tan, how I like it, but already, it is one of the best I have used. It is called L'Oreal "Sublime Bronze" , Comes in three formulas; Lotion, Bronzing Lotion, Gelee. Both medium and deep colour in each of the textures. The lotion would be apropos for dry/normal skin, as it hydrates(untinted though it develops soon after application). They all contain AHA's.. and you know from other threads, I am a fan. The gellee is tinted as well, more apropos for oilier skin types.. fast drying, non-streaking. The Tinted lotion ( the one I have on) is good for any skin type, really, and gives an instant glow, then it develops. The sparkles are subtle, and would give excellent leg baring shimmer underneath a sexy flared bottom skirt. Not too much, just enough. So far so good, but if you are curious, I will let you know. But go to your drugstore, and give it a sniff.. it is by far the BEST SMELLING self tanner ever!!!!

Well, if anyone is interested, I have used it twice.. the colour is nice, natural and believable, after two applications it is more noticable, still smells great, no streaking. (and I love the subtle sparkle.)I am super-impressed!!!!! I recommend this one, for sure. IP: Logged |

Unnatural? Hmmm, then I am the queen of Unnatural...hee heeI highlight my hair, I use the tan stuff -because I am lots paler now living on the East coast, I wear make-up, paint my finger and toe nails, I put on essential oil for fragrance and I love vanilla lotion. Well, if that is unnatural then so be it..I LOVE it!!! IP: Logged |

I must admit being black and living in So Cal , tanning comes very easliy (to easily one year I wore capries to a near by lake and I looked like I hadn't bathed-you know the 'dirty sock look' -until the tan faded in NOVEMBER) I must admit I found this thread a bit strange...although when it came to hair removal I was right there...Its amazing sometimes. If it is somehting you are in to there is not a problem if it is something that your not...it's easy to climb up the pedstal...thanks for knocking me down a bit Pixelpixie :big grin: Amber (Libra) IP: Logged |

I'm a pale ass Canadian with Dutch ancestry, and our summers get as hot as anywhere else.... I also have skincare knowledge, and I know how damaging the Sun can be, and that it takes ten years for any damage to really show up.. so all these beautiful ladies that go to the tanning salon, thinking it is safer, well, I will see them in ten years, asking for the best anti-aging cream, as the wrinkles just popped up 'out of nowhere'. I love colour.. and it does make you look younger/healthier. But I do enough damage to my skin already, without help from the sun... so bronzers are a great alternative, and I wear at least an SPF(broad spectrum) of fifteen. Even in winter. You have the advantage of having melanin protection naturally, so you will age more beautifully than I will.. but still, you should wear an SPF IP: Logged |

I couldn`t sleep last night w/te severe storms so I got up to eat brownies and cuddle with the critters. I turned on the tube & there was an infomercial for South Beach Tanning Towelette. Guaranteed to make you look slimmer, healthier and younger. I want a whole roll As a redhead, I burn easly at first then I settle into a nice nut brown tan. I carry it most of the year because I`m outside all the time. Sun reflecting off snow can burn/tan you too. I just let Mother Nature do it naturally. ------------------ If having a soul means being able to feel love and loyalty and gratitude, then animals are better off than a lot of humans. ~James Herriot IP: Logged |

I plan on trying that L'Oreal stuff, mainly cause I'm English/Irish/Scottish/Holland Dutch/French/Russian...therefore, very very naturally "fair" skinned. I burn pretty bad in the summer, then finally tan, but it takes way too long, and my mom and gram have both had some skin cancer. Eek. I'm not taking any unnecessary chances. So, it would probably be best to exfoliate, do the Veet treatment, THEN, tan, right? Sounds like pretty good planning. ------------------ -K "Most people love with restraint As if they were someday to hate We hated gently, carefully As if we were someday to love"-Venus Trines at Midnight IP: Logged |

Pixelpixie you are so right!Sunscreen is important for everyone. My Grandmother died from Melonoma. By the time they found it it was too late. Just beacuse you are a person of color (I prefer Black when speaking of myself...) doesn't mean it can't happen... IP: Logged |

Pixie, I am going to have to try that..I LOVE sparkles..hee hee Total Pieces...that's funny and sad about the sock thing. I tan extremely fast as well and have to be careful with what I am wearing. My tan lines usually last until December / January, so when I was working with ranchers I ended up with a wicked Farmers tan - I mean very bronzed arms and neck, but tan other regions..try wearing a bikini with that LOL>. Sooooo, I dedided to do the sunless tan in those light regions - turned a bit orange, got a bit sloppy and ended up with a three finger swatch across my bicep..that tanned even more..darker than everything else. Needless to say, some of friends teased me and said 'Hey babe, is that your Braves mark on your arm?" LOL...funny...haa haa.. I am more careful now. IP: Logged |

I mean a self tan applicator mitt. It is this velvety textured mitt... (The one I have is called 'Velvet-tan') It is smooth and goes on luxuriously, and evenly with no streaks. Especially useful with a fast drying formula. I love mine, and get really good results with it. I hope you find one (If not, let me know, and we'll exchange email info, I'll send you one.) It's worth it, I swear!!! IP: Logged |
