Most of you already know this, but I just thought I'd share some info on soft drinks. I'm not saying we should quit them completely, but just to cut back. Carbonated beverages cause erosion of tooth enamel. This isn't the same as decay. Erosion is like melting away layers of enamel, so that (over time) teeth become weak and brittle. It is also no accident that soft drink consumption has increased in the US, and so has obesity. Phosphoric acid increases the acidity in the body, and the body has to use fat to insulate and protect healthy cells. Phosphoric acid is deadly to the human body. We need a proportionate amount of calcium, magnesium, and phosphorous to have healthy bones. The problem is that many processed foods are high in phosphorous. We get more than enough. Soft drinks are so high in phosphoric acid that only ten ounces raise the pH levels through the roof. If high pH is maintained for very long, the human body shuts down (in other words, we die). So, in order to compensate, the body leeches calcium from the bones to neutralize the acidity created by cola. Not a good thing. I love cola myself, but it would be a very good thing for us to cut down. High pH levels manifest in many serious illnesses (some would say all sickness can be traced to the acidity of the body), but the main thing that's most common is acne. ------------------ "Never mentally imagine for another that which you would not want to experience for yourself, since the mental image you send out inevitably comes back to you." Good information, Randall, thank you!I hardly ever drink carbonated beverages, so thankfully I will not have to worry about my calcium from that perspective. But I do drink a LOT of coffee. Since you seem pretty knowledgeable about health in general, Randall, can you tell me anything about the effects of coffee on the body? IP: Logged |

thanks, randall, for the great info! so how does that argument go over down in georgia? i have a cousin from alabama and they used to drink coke for breakfast! i used to use the old tooth dissolving argument myself, until i ran across an "urban legends" page that refuted it (while doing research for a response to jw in GU ) - i'd also be really surprised if Big Gulps didn't have any connection to the soaring rates of early onset diabetes in this country. so, carbonated beverages... does that include, say, Perrier or Pelegrino? No, it's the phosphoric acid in colas that cause the erosion. As far as I know, only colas have phosphoric acid, not other pops (fanta, sprite etc), but beware of the sugar!!Pelegrino and Perrier are naturally lightly carbonated (meaning, the water source actually has natural carbonation in it), it's not added after filling. yeah I drink that sugar water maybe once in a blue moon. It's freaky to think that some people drink this stuff at every meal of every day. *shudder*And the fact that it's marketed to children is utterly repugnant. I don't think anything that isn't healthy should be allowed to be marketed to children. ------------------ It is an old habit with theologians to beat the living with the bones of the dead. :::Robert G. Yeah, beware the sugar, but even worse, beware the aspartame. Lots of threads and debates about that stuff in H& H. And let's not forget that soda is loaded with sodium. Despite advertising, it's impossible for soda to quench your thirst. No, it's designed to be insidious--it will increase your thirst, so you will in turn drink more. Very rare that I drink a soda. Water, vegetable and fresh fruit juices...and...um...adult beverages. IP: Logged |

I agree one shouldn't drink any soda's at all, even diet ones, which are probably worse. Who wants to drink chemicals? Coke supposedly has 16 teaspoons of sugar in one can. My soda-replacement drink of choice is Crystal Geyser Juice Squeeze. It has *NO* sugar, real fruit juice, and carbonation. It is very yummy, especially the passion fruit and mango. IP: Logged |

Me too... can't we all agree to have an open relationship? If it means I can have him, I'd happily take turns. Not a pop drinker myself. I prefer hot drinks, even in the heat. ( Like a cat, can never be warm enough!)IP: Logged |

Just to add some facts here. Did you know that a can of coke sinks in water while a can of diet coke floats? All because of the sugar in coke. Interesting hey?IP: Logged |

ok, I will concede there is something really yummy about the combination of pizza and soda. That's when my rare indulgence of the soda thing usually happens. My preferred soda for those occasions is usually Blue Sky ginger ale, though. I don't feel so guilty about supporting some vile corporation like Coke then. ------------------ It is an old habit with theologians to beat the living with the bones of the dead. :::Robert G. I agree - Coffee is an open relationship - we can ALL share him..hee heeI like Pizza and beer together Oh yeah, and I also love dipping French fries into a chocolate shake and kosher pickles on a peanut butter sandwich. LOL...no, I am not pregnant. You think that is odd? Mr. Tuarus was telling me that one of this favorites sandwiches was peanut butter, mayonaise and banana - and if he has bacon he adds that too? Is that a Southern thing? He is from North Carolina. LOL IP: Logged |
