You've really never heard of a swamp yankee, Xelena? Hmm, I thought it was used all over New England. Gramps didn't make it up though, lots of people use the term down here. Mostly in the southern part of the state. Funny thing is we don't really have much in the way of swamps either. I'm not sure how the term originated. I'll investigate.

juniperb! this is a stupid question, but... do horses really give birth out their a$$es??? i mean, do they only have one hole? like chickens??? (i'm trying to think how to google that one!)

philbird - sounds like you'll appreciate this bit of lore. in the little town where i grew up there was a guy called Boob. they say he was so named because he breast fed 'til age thirteen!!!

tink - nope, really honest to honest i'd never heard swamp yankee before. but i'm interested to know what you find out - that lack of swamps things is a kicker!

XB, no but you can feel the swollen uterus thru the rectal canal.

Horses and other bovine do give vaginal birth. Watch to movie Seabiscuit" They show him being born, and it's a good flick.

TINK! i visited my dad this weekend and asked him if he knew what a swamp yankee was. he promptly went into story mode and spun a yarn quite like that in your link above! his family is from new york, and he's also a revolutionary war buff.
learn something new every day - thanks!

I knew it!

(Also a wee bit of a revolutionary war buff myself. Hats off to Dad.)

I will be passing thru your lovely New Hampshire next week on my way to Maine. I'll give you a friendly wave when I cross the state line.

Mass it is then.

What's better than an old timer with a bag of stories? Enjoy!

We're headed up to Bar Harbor to do a little hiking in Acadia. Mountains and the Sea - my favorite combo.
