I've been sitting here listening to the radio as I peruse LindaLand tonight. New artist Gretchen Wilson's debut single "Redneck Woman" is number one on the country charts for the second week in a row. Though I do not agree with everything in the song (I do NOT leave my Christmas lights on my front porch all year long, thank you)so much of it rings true for me. I'm just wondering if there is anyone else here who considers themself a Redneck. And what is it that makes you a Redneck? LLL IP: Logged |

Born and bred a Redneck. And I love the song. Much of it is so true for me as well. ------------------ If having a soul means being able to feel love and loyalty and gratitude, then animals are better off than a lot of humans. ~James Herriot IP: Logged |

Yup Trillian, you do.I`m just me and don`t pretend to be anything else. I`m a redneck woman I ain`t no high class broad Like Gretchen, my cloths come from Wal Mart; a 200 hundred dollar dress don`t change me a whit. I prefer mudding to dancing, critters to boastful folks, and the unadulatrated joy of expressing mys-elf without the hindrence of what`s acceptable to fit in a specific nich I desire to fit into the Divines role for me, not what`s cool, hip or socially acceptable. AAAHHHH, Redneck. I was born a red neck! You name it, it was all in my town growing up! The bassett hounds with fleas, out-houses, Drunken guys with guns in their trucks. A tiny town of about 100 people. Junk yards and car parts in almost everyone's back yard. Scrapple, venesen, those wooden statues of women bending over their flower gardens, positioned so their butts are the only thing you can see. In my town the term redneck came from all the people having to farm their land. While farming, their necks would get red from the sun. Folled by lots of drinking. That turned their whole face red. Most of the people weren't educated. So there lots of cursing. Oh, chewing tobacco and hond rolled cigs too! Sausage, lots and lots of home made sausage! And the sweet smell of cow poop!. (once youv'e smelled it, there's no going back.) There is more but it would take a book for the rest. I have worked most of my adult life trying to speak properly, but every now and again I'll blurt out something like "Make out the lights" or "I'll learn you!" Truthfully, I would like to cuss every chance I get, but I have to be professional. If I'm passing a cow farm I must stick out my head and inhale the smell. Everything I am, and will be comes from the smell of cows on a hot summer's night. And Yes, lots' of "Trailer trash" I'm sure there is more. As recently as 1997 there was a KKK cross burning ceremony in my mom's front yard, because she had recently adopted four black children. Really scary, white hoods and everything. My Uncle chased them off the property with a shot-gun, and red truck. P.S. No Wal-Mart! Just hand-me-downs. I probably know more about cow poop than you know about metaphysics!. You guys think I'm nuts don't you?IP: Logged |

Yeah, but Xelena those aren't called rednecks though. Are they? I thought you had swamp yankees up there too. I'm confused now. We've definitely got swamp yankees down here.Anyways, yes I've been. Gorgeous. The waterfalls are lovely. Last one I went to I think was called Diana's Baths? Near Conway. God, I felt so awful when the Old Man in the Mountain fell. Surely that was a sign of the Apocalypse. philbird, that sounds like FUN

Oh, Philbird, I must say that it sounds like the people in your town were more white trash than Redneck, and, yes, there is a difference. But I understand how it can be confusing for people, especially with people like Jeff Foxworthy and his "You might be a Redneck if..." which is more white trash than Redneck humor. I feel sadness that you don't fell free to express the Redneck side of your self. Ah, the joys of being a Redneck. To most people who are not Rednecks we must seem so backwards, kind of like the Amish to us "English." But for me there is nothing better than doing things myself and seeing the product of my labor. Growing my own food, cooking from scratch rather than pre-packaged, frozen or tin canned, sewing my own clothes by hand, remodeling my bathroom with my dad rather than hiring a contractor, so on. I am too proud to ask for help, but have enough humility to accept help when it is offered, and am more than willing to do the same for my neighbor. There is a part of me that cannot understand how people in this world live 10 feet from someone else and do not even know that person's name. Irish Eyes is on her way home from Pennsylvania right now partly because she needed to get back to this "backwards" way of life for awhile. We're going to spend a couple of evenings sitting on the front porch with my sister, wine coolers and beers in hand, talking and laughing the entire night. She can't do that in Eastern PA. People think she's insane. I hope no one takes offense to what I have said here. I do not consider myself or my life better than other's because I live this way. I guess I have just finally learned to have a sense of humble pride for the way I was raised and where I'm from. And to all you Rednecks out there - "YEEHAW!!!" LLL

LLL, I can't stand what Jeff Foxworthy finds humorious. I find it insulting and degrading. He's writing for people who look down their noses at others. As a matter of fact the whole "Western Diner" "Mag" is insulting. (most of the time) I used to live in PA., Somewhere near Boyertown. There is a heavy Omish and german influence there. I have to disagree about the white trash thing, I don't believe they are into farming. Where did your sister travel to? I may know the town. A weird thing happened when I moved out here to AZ. One of the first people I met went to the same High School I did, she graduated a year before I did!. What is you definition of a red-neck? We all hung on the front porch with our neighbors. We were very tight and knew everything about them. Please explain red-neck, really. IP: Logged |

OK now, white trash we've got. plenty in fact. And, sadly, they are not involved in farming. I have now come to the conclusion that rednecks and swamp yankees are one and the same. This makes me happy because my great-great-great grandpa would never tell anyone where exactly in England he was born. He would always just insist that he was a swamp yankee. Sooooo...this means I have redneck blood!! YEEHAW right back at you LLL IP: Logged |

I'm originally from the U.K. and although I've lived in the States a few years now, this whole red neck thing confuses me.Do you define a red neck as a person who has not had the advantage or benefit of decent education, or coming from a certain area or class? Are they all farmers? Of course I've heard all the jokes before, but I'd really like to know the true definition of red neck. IP: Logged |

Hmmmm. I live in PA, lots of people of all 'classes' sit outside and drink beer, shooting the sh!t long into the night. Last summer I sat on the patio of multimillionaires doing just that, and sat on my own porch doing the same (mine being far from a million anything but stars in the sky).IP: Logged |

How to define Redneck? And the difference between Redneck and white trash? The term Redneck originally comes from the "red" necks of farmers and outdoorsman. In the simplest terms a Redneck is someone who makes their living from the land. Originally it also referred to lower class, uneducated people, because rich, educated folks would not spend enough time working outside to become red necked. Of course, as with everything else, the definition has changed. Now a Redneck is someone who may or may not make their living from the land, but they do take pride in what they do and are not afraid of hard work. A Redneck takes pride in doing things for him/her self. A lot of people may say "Well, then, I must be a Redneck." But there's more to it than just this. It's an attitude. Which turns out is a nice segue into the difference between Rednecks and white trash. Now, there may be regional differences in the definitions and distinctions, but where I'm from it comes down to a matter of respect. A Redneck respects him/her self, other people, and his/her surroundings. The best way to explain this is to tell you about my ex-in-laws. They were white trash. (Okay, it didn't help that they were alcoholic/addicts as well, but even without drugs and alcohol they were white trash.) Paul and Alice both made good wages, but you would never be able to tell just looking at them. Or their house. Dirty, unkempt, falling apart. Loud and crass, they treated people horribly, and their children even worse. The first time I took Butthead (the ex) home to meet my family he came away with the impression that we were loaded, when in truth, together my parents made less than his stepfather alone. Why did he think my family was rich? We took care of our belongings, surroundings, and each other. What we had was all we had and it had to last. Food on the table and a roof over our head was more important than anything we may have "wanted" but did not "need." If nothing else you could say that we respected our places in life whereas his family only looked for the bigger and better, but did not have the resources or drive to actually work for it.
Irish Eyes will be here tomorrow!!! My best friend for 15+ years. It's sad that she must live so far away. Bethleham, PA, is about 1500 miles from Central Missouri. I know for a fact she will be happy to be back home, even just for a few weeks. (And even though the weather is going to kill her. 95 degrees with 75% huimidity today.) There's too much joy inside me tonight. Blessings to all.

LLL I lived in the vicinity of Bethlehem! My mom and some sisters still live there. I moved to AZ. because I couldn't take the 75% humidity. It's about 90 here with 40% humidity. It's so much easier to breath.I just looked up red-neck in Webster. Can you believe it's in there? Take a look! IP: Logged |

Would you believe I can't find my Webster, but I did find a Doubleday. All I can say is a Yankee must have written that - and about 50 years ago too. That's the great thing about terms like Redneck, and Yankee. It depends on where and how you were rasied and your personal point of view as to whether it is a disparaging term or not. philbird - ever go cow-tipping? in the town where i grew up "redneck" meant you wore workboots as regular footwear, listened to country music and had a gun rack on the back of your truck. ummm, and perhaps a questionable number of teeth in your mouth tink - i had never heard "swamp yankee" until you said it - did your grandpa make that up or is it a rhode island thing? i dunno if we have swamp yankees up here - ain't much in the way of swamps... my dad has a canoe business in the White Mountains, so since i was a baby the old man on the mountain was a sign that we were "almost there". *sigh* IP: Logged |

Of course! Cow tipping, playing on farm equipment, stealing strawberries, pumpkin-gut tossing at cars during halloween. One time I hoped up on a tractor that belonged to an implement shop, played with the buttons, and the thing started up! I bailed and it ran into some other farm equipment. OOOPPPPPSSSSSS! There was a ton of folklore too. One story that circulated while I was a kid, was there was this guy, JOHNNY who would be seen standing in a window way of an old vacant two story shack. The older kids said he would stand in the window way and masterbate especially when young children were around. Mostly everyone avoided the area because of the rumors. But..... One Halloween, some neighbors and I were passing by the shack and low and behold, there was JOHNNY in the window, masterbating. (first we laughes our arses off, then ran like hell). No longer a rumor as far as we were concerned!!!!! Lots of other stuff too. We were mostly unsupervised because our parents had to work. Oh God, we were bad. Ever put your hand up a horses' ass?
