June 18, 2004When it comes to wine, some consumers still equate quality with price. But at the 28th Annual International Eastern Wine Competition, a $1.99 bottle of California Wine, the 2002 Charles Shaw Shiraz, beat out 2,300 wines to win a prestigious double gold medal. I'm a great wine lover. I love wine especially the full bodied reds. I'm not at all surprised. I shall rush out and see if I can get a bottle. I'd love to try it. Some of our cheapies are often way better in quality, and they don't lack individual character either. We live in an area surrounded by vines of every type of grape you could imagine. We buy our wine from both large and small producers. The whole industry has gone full circle. Wine is been made in small co-operatives just as it was many years ago. The big boys hate it. Price does not always mean quality, nor does a particular label. We have friends who are such big wine snobs. I love serving them some of the cheaper wines, ones they would not normally even consider. I don't always bother to decant it either. They go out of their way not to look at cheaper wines, so they often don't even recognize the label. So folks, I say drink your wine and be alert, just see if you can taste the sun under which the vines ripened. Whether it's $1.99 or $100.00 Enjoy! Enjoy!! Enjoy!!!
