I'm wondering how many of you out here in LindaLand don't watch or own a television.
I'm sure there's got to be a few.

My boyfriend and I don't watch TV. Although we do have one, only to watch the occasional movie.

I also grew up without watching too much of it. We had one, and sometimes we had basic cable. But most of the time, my brother and I would have to struggle to get in the local stations by making metal coathanger and tinfoil antennae contraptions. At the time we though it was unfair that all of our friends had cable and we did'nt. But looking back I think it was best that we were'nt in front of a TV all the time. And I find it interesting that my brother has also made the choice not to watch the tube.

Don't get me wrong I don't think I'm better than anyone else because of this choice and I'm not looking to start an argument on why television is good or bad. We all have our own opinions. I am interested in how many others are out there who have made this same choice. And I found an extremely informative website that some of you might find interesting.

I'm intersted in hearing your thoughts.

Instead of staring at the TV I now stare at a computer monitor.

I watcha little TV but seriously not much. i always forget when shows are on. Every now and then I really want to see something on SciFi, Discovery, the History Channel, the Learning Channel, etc.

That's pretty much the extent of it. Although I *****LOVE***** rendint dvd's. Have to have movies.

I like my TV.
And my computer, my phone, my blowdryer, my microwave...

I like life in the modern world.

i LOVE movies and i'd have a hard time functioning without my computer and top-notch internet service, but other than that i echo your sentiments, 26taurus.

i did grow up watching TV, but i'm more of a book person, so i don't miss it. i can't cough up the money for cable and, well, the old aluminum foil thing barely even works anymore, so why bother! when i visit my parents, i do occassionally enjoy the stations BloodRedMoon mentioned. that is, if i can get them to stop watching the cooking channel for five minutes! (oh, and i do love the Iron Chef!!!)

i don't hate TV, it's just not for me. my husband, however, is one of those who thinks it's evil. he has strong opinions . i find commercials artistic, he feels they are manipulative. i find sitcoms tedious, he thinks they're killing our brains. i ask him, "now, if everyone in the world were as ascetic as you, how boring would that be?"

i think some folks are more affected by Madison Ave than others. if turning off the TV helps you quiet your mind, that's great. if falling asleep in front of the TV helps you to relax, that's great, too. (hmmm, he sounds like the capricorn and i sound like the libra here!)

so yes, taurus, in answer to your question, i have made the same choice. though it was more of a winding road than an abrupt corner.

Great subject, although I'm not comfortable with the word "k*ll".

I watch TV only a couple nights a week. I don't want to offend anyone, but there is SO MUCH JUNK on T.V. I don't watch sit-coms excpet for "According to Jim". I don't know, I just like that show. Other than that, I watch Survivor religiously but that's about it. Once in awhile I watch Emeril, but he uses too much salt Of course I love Animal Planet and Discovery shows about animals.

I would rather READ and LEARN more. I would rather enjoy the sunlight and outdoors. I would rather play with my dog. I would rather stand outside and talk to the neighbors, go on a walk, go swimming, or just smell the flowers.

I recently finished 3 books by not watching TV. The Da Vinci Code, Mysterious Stranger, and The Birth of Venus. Now I am reading Creative Visualization.

I read the newspaper every day but I must admit you don't get all the news by that, some things that are on TV news aren't in the newspaper and vice=versa.

I feel I have been such a vocal proponent of my beliefs at this site that any of you could guess what my answer to this question will be. But here it is anyway:

I never watch television (advertising is the subtle art of psychologically manipulating the masses to a feeling of discontent).

I do watch movies -- some of them can be genuinely called art.

And for those that say they have traded in staring at the TV screen for staring at the computer screen -- at least the computer requires active participation from you. The brain is functioning rather than in a passive state.

I too would rather read, play on the computer, paint, draw, enjoy the nature I am surrounded by.

You took the words right out of my fingers, Paras.

Trillian - I use a blow dryer too.
So, yes feel free to kill my TV, but ..... step away from the blowdryer.

T.V. can be educational and entertaining. I love the Animal Planet, Discovery and National Geographic. I also catch some Gardening programs.

It constitutes from 3-5 hours of my time a week. A lot of cloths can get folded during this time so it`s not a total waste

Hey paras,
Do you own a microwave? Just curious. I don't, but I'm not some crazed anti-microwave / kill your microwave person.
I just don't think they are good for people.
You all must think I'm real nutty - someone who thinks we should all live like we are in the Dark Ages or something. I'm not. I'm just different. Okay I'm nutty.
But I manage to survive without one. Anyone else?
Yes, I'm a weirdo.

Microwaves are too convenient to resist. Although I do sometimes wonder if there are any negative effects on one's health from microwaved foods. If I ever get positive confirmation of this, I'll stop using one.

Hey paras,
You've started me on another thread I've posted "and kill your microwave too"
I think you find the info interesting to say the least.

By the way you mentioned you watched movies. I'm interested in some of your favorites.

We have a tv, my son and hubby would kill me if I got rid of it. But I hate the thing lol--I hide it in a tv-cupboard, and it's out of the way doing it's dust-catching alone without me having to look at it. I DO like to watch Discovery or the history channel, and my son is allowed to watch those two channels as much as he wants. He watches quite a bit of tv, about 1-1.5 hours a day, but it's all documentary, so I think that's ok. No cartoons, no mind-killing stuff. Hubby needs his half hour news, as well as a few movies a week, and the weekly murder-mystery series here. Otherwise the radio is always on, I need the noise in the background.

I only microwave frozen veggies, and warm up my son's chocolate milk in the morning.

My TV just collects dust...

If I ever use it, it's for things like movies and such, maybe, maybe the occasional vidio game. besides that, TV sucks. All it is, is commercials and more crap like that, More commercials.gross.
