I'm wondering how many Knowflakes here play musical instruments.

I play guitar. I bought an acoustic a few years ago - got a book and taught myself to play. I don't have the guitar anymore, but I plan to get a new one eventually.

Who else here plays something? Just curious.
.........maybe we could start a band! LOL

I used to play bass and guitar, as well as a little bit of keyboard (roommate's MiniMOOG), but haven't played anything in a while. Used to write a bunch of stuff, too. Maybe I'll get back into it.

This quote by Samuel Butler is just WRONG: "Life is like music; it must be composed by ear, feeling, and instinct, not by rule."

Serial music can be very effective. Composers like Schoenberg and Jarzombek have done some really wicked stuff, you know. Probably because they were never tied down by rule, ear, feeling or instinct.

I play drums - primarily a kit but I've done some percussion stuff as well with school and college bands. I can play a little guitar and bass, and I do a lot of remixing on my beloved PC.

hi bigfoot,
The quote says, "not by rule". Life, like music should be composed by ear, feeling, and instinct.......NOT by rule.

Music IS composed by ear, feeling and insinct - among other things.

When rules are set - limits are set. And there are no limits to music. Music is love, and you cannot set boundries on love.

Maybe you just read it wrong.
That's so cool that you play AND write.

I used to play the sax. I now own an organ and will try ro learn in the future. I also have an acoustic guitar and will get a classical one soon, though I don't know if I can play it well (B's sooo hard). Otherwise, I'm looking forward to buying a sax again (last one was stolen), then clarinet, then fulte. Last, maybe a trympet. I'm thinking my 30s will be an awesome decade for learning music, until then there's too much other stuff to do...

Hi 26taurus. I read it correctly, and have studied music enough to know that limits aren't a bad thing at all. Composing with limits is a discipline. See: 12 Tone Composition and Serialism. And when it comes down to it, composing by ear, feeling, and instinct can be limiting as well. In my opinion, it takes ear, feeling, instinct, as well as rule to make a good composition. Had Samuel Butler stayed alive long enough to study some of Schoenberg's Pantonal music, he probably would have changed his view.

Hey Bigfoot,
I see what youre saying. I just think when you set limits on something - anything - that is just stunting its growth. Yes, you can work WITHIN limits, become disciplined, and produce great things within the frame work. But I think it is better to grow, change, and discover new ways. Especially in the vast realm of music. "Don't live life by the rules." Maybe that's just the strong Aquarian influences in me!
Great thoughts!

I play keyboard, used to play a little guitar, drums, violin, viola, etc. etc. Now just have fun writing and recording folk-/Kate Bush-inspired songs.

26taurus-
You've got to have rules in music. For example: You've just written something that just happens to be in C Major. You play it for your keyboard player. He likes it. Your drummer notes that it's in 4/4. They learn it. When it comes time to rehearse, your drummer and keyboard player both turn out to be Discordians and begin playing in 7/8 time against your 4/4, and the keyboard player plays in C# Major instead of C Major. The result wouldn't be what you expected. What do you do?
