Anyone who may know about this issue.

In my pasture, I found whats been tentatively identified as a 300 million year old piece of chain coral. Said to be from when MI was an ocean. Something I never knew and boggles my mind.

Anyhow, I wish to research it and am clueless where to start.

This coral is as big as my fist and perfectly preserved. An awesome piece which I wondered if was of any interest to geologists et al.

Along with it, I also found what appears to be an ax head or type of adze. The amatures can`t quite decide.

Thanks! juniperb

Hee hee

Thank You for posting this
It got me started on a search to find you a good explanatory site, and I found this neat place: www.paleoportal.org
which may have a couple of answers for you here: http://www.paleoportal.org/time_space/state.php?state_id=29&period_id=13
(I'm not sure if I have the right period for you there re: the coral, but it's a pretty easily navigatable place ... I think I'll be enjoying it for a while.)
edit: Oh, wait...general Michigan info: http://www.paleoportal.org/time_space/state.php?name=Michigan

FK'll be much more help, I'm sure, especially concerning the ax head.
I've the barest of bare knowledge of any kind of archaeology with only marginally more info re: paleoanthropology (barely more than can be gotten from popular science books)...which wouldn't be of any help with this question, anyway.
I've almost no knowledge of geology beyond the basics...though I did get a 101% for the year in the class back in HS (but that's just b/c I enjoy crawling around in caves and digging stuff up).

But, oh! Thank you again!
I've not looked into paleontology at all for a while, and I'd forgotten how much of a buzz it gives me
I'd even begun to forget how much I enjoy anthropology, et al when I actually get into 'em.

edit: Oh, and here's a handy geologic timescale just in case you were curious:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geologic_timescale

2nd edit: This blurb talks about cultures in Wisconsin and N. Michigan: http://www.suite101.com/print_article.cfm/17281/109376
Dunno how much help that'll be, though

And to anyone else interested:
You can look-up your own state's geologic history

Yes, stuff like this really does make me happy.

How about Blobby and Blobbette for the first two

The MI link was cool. I was intrigued by the warm sea covering us and being so close to the equater. Maybe I should have been a little geekier in H.S. & I would have known that.

Now off to the others as that one didn`t have any reference to chain coral.

While my curiosity isn`t satisfied yet, I found a pic of a similar one. Mine is more sharply defined .

Phylum Cnidaria
Order Tabulata
Genus Favosites (Honeycomb coral)
