I received a package that said "Pitted Dates" and on the back of the package in small, small print it said "Caution: Machine pitted, may contain pits" I was pretty p.oed, because I hate sneaky advertising!

I liked the sneaky dog next door one. Those were good.Juni, I read that you have a plum tree? What kind are they? We have one. We don't know it's official type, but we think they are Italian prune plums. They are dark purple on the outside, and a peachy flesh color on the inside, small, and are best eaten not too soft, but just a little soft. So far my mother has made loads of plum jam, and cake, and we each made a pie. We are up to our elbows in plums. IP: Logged |

I have two plum trees, both a different type: self pollinating/fruitful. I live on the 45th parallel so our fruit trees are very cold hardy. They won`t be ripe for 2-3 weeks yet. We have an Italian Prune Plum too, so sweet and juicy they rarely make it to the preservation dept I have to fight the wild critters for them . As cold hardy as they are, I`m suprised they do as well in CA.
Also, a Blue Damson Plum which is rather tart and firm, perfect for jams, jellies and sauces. Don`t forget to make plum cobbler and plum bread pudding Right now I`m up to my ears in mullberrys. I`ve dried them, froze em, made jams, cobblers, cakes, pies and fresh on my cereals.Next I`m trying freezer jam as I`m out of ideas. Raspberries, blueberries and black caps are comming on fast, but the apples, pears, peachs and grapes will be delayed 2-3 weeks due to a late spring, so I have some breathing time . I know a long winded fruity tale but I love canning season! juniperb ------------------ If having a soul means being able to feel love and loyalty and gratitude, then animals are better off than a lot of humans. ~James Herriot IP: Logged |

Juniperb, I could not find this thread, I was going nuts trying to figure out where I asked you about plums! Finally I found it. Anyhow, our plum tree actually bloomed/fruited earlier than normal this year. We had warm weather in March, and off and on in April and May. The plums were ready in June, but they usually aren't ready until mid-July. So most of the plums have either fallen by now or been picked. My mother's dogs, the Dobermans whom we lost last year (1 to cancer, and 1 to cardio-myopathy), used to race to get the ones which had fallen on the ground. If you went to pick some, they would bark and both try to "catch" any falling that you might drop while picking. Oh, you are so lucky you have berries. I LOVE berries, especially BOYSENBERRIES. We used to pick them wild years ago, but either those wild bushes are gone or we forget when the right time is. Our apple tree is not quite ready yet either, nor our pear. The pears are all hard as a rock. Anyhow, thanks for the fruit chat IP: Logged |

Dearest Juni,I'd really like to know why my plum trees only have three plums on them this year. I have two plum trees which are rather large but I only have 6 plums. Three on each. I'm gloomy, plumless, and obviously, bloody clueless! Gia IP: Logged |

Nephys Not sure Gia. Every two or three years my yield is next to nothing too. That includes my apples, pears, berries ect. It may be climatic or possably like many of my flowering bushs. They bloom heavily every other year as a way to replenish the energy of the tree. My pear has a 1/2 dozen golden nuggets if I`m lucky, and last year, it yielded a good bushel. I`m going to be pearless I will ask the commercial growers tho because I`ve wondered too but attributed it to a rest period. I`m on overload with peachs tho. juniperb ------------------ If having a soul means being able to feel love and loyalty and gratitude, then animals are better off than a lot of humans. ~James Herriot IP: Logged |

Yum!I wished you lived next door. We'd have a great fruit stall guys. I have: X2 Plums Cherry Apple Peach Nectarine Orange Lemon I also have herbs, tomato, squash, and peppers. I'd like to do more however, time money and irrigation are all problems. We may need to dig a well. It takes quite a bit of looking after don't you agree? I am in the process of getting a different area ready to plant a fig tree and an olive tree. My sister has an olive farm in Sardinia. I love olives. My husband is keen to plant 18 small grape vines on a sliding slope. Not to make wine, no time for that!! Just normal table grapes to eat and give away to the birds. Gia

Juni,I noticed you made a plum thread but no one seems to be talking about plums. Do you make/bake anything with your fruits? Gia, Where in Calif. do you live? You mentioned getting grape vines on a sliding slope; the other day we took Jasmine (my dog) on a walk to Sleepy Hollow (you go over a hill that separates our town from S.H.) and a house right there had grape vines all perfectly lined up on a slanting hill! Wow sounds like you have a lot of great fruit trees and garden too!

Gia, I would so love to be able to grow lemons (and oranges)! You are blessed to be kissed with sunshine I have tried the minnie house variety but the woodstove keeps them too dry. I don`t have irrigation except me & my hose . Here the sun doesn`t really drain us too badly tho. I have: 2 plum 4 apple ( Grannys, Jonathans, Macintosh and Northern Spys) 1 Bing cherry (don`t care for tarts but friends do) 1 pear 1 peach 3 varieties of grapes, purple concord, a pink and a yellow. Which are laden this year blueberries, raspberries (red and yellow variety),black caps (wild variety) mullberries and wild currents. I think thats all I have more herbs than veggies but tomatoes, potatos, peas, carrots and beans are my favs and easy to can/store/freeze. This year I have kolarobi and oh are they crunchy and so good fresh out of the ground.
Not fond of olives but I have a Russian Olive tree for pure beauty. juniperb

Nephts, it`s all good. My plum is mellowing into a sweet little prune and keeping the life cycle moving I am a baking fool I love fresh cobblers, upside down cakes, muffins ( I even tried grapes in muffins, not recommended ) Pancakes with fresh fruit in the batter is one of my favs with fresh creamery butter and a fork. juniperb ------------------ If having a soul means being able to feel love and loyalty and gratitude, then animals are better off than a lot of humans. ~James Herriot IP: Logged |
