Sixth Arson Blaze Lights Up CountyAugust 14, 2004
By KELLY ADAMS, Columbian staff writer
The sixth in a string of arson fires near communications towers was set early Friday morning, said Senior Deputy Fire Marshal Richard Martin.
The blaze on the utility pole, which is near 11508 N.E. Fourth Plain Blvd., was reported at about 2 a.m. The fire did minimal damage to the pole, Martin said.
The fire was about 200 feet away from Monday's blaze at 11418 N.E. Fourth Plain Blvd., the fifth fire in the series. That fire was set inside a fenced enclosure containing heating and air conditioning equipment. A cell phone tower in the same lot was torched Aug. 2.
Also on Aug. 2, a cell phone tower was set on fire in Salmon Creek at 13412 N.E. 20th Ave. That same tower also was set ablaze Aug. 1.
On Aug. 6, a radio transmission tower owned by the Washington State Patrol was set ablaze at 11018 N.E. 51st Circle, near Highway 500 and Northeast 112th Avenue. The damage estimate for the WSP tower was set at $100,000. Damage estimates for the other towers were not available.
While reluctant to say the fires were all set by the same person, Martin said "there are some similarities."
The fires are being investigated by the Vancouver Fire Department, the Vancouver Police Department, the Washington State Patrol, the Clark County Fire Marshal's Office and the state Fire Marshal's Office.
Martin would not reveal how the blazes were set or if any suspects were identified. On Monday, officials said there was not any evidence that explosives were used to set the fires.
A reward of up to $10,000 is being offered for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the arsons. Anyone with information is asked to call 360-696-8148.
