Okay..so I am here in Arizona and my Fiance found a great lead for a position with Univ of AZ in Tucson. It would be as an editor for the Biotechnology division's section of the newspaper.Well!!!! My background is in Biology and Chemistry and I spent the last 5 years in Biotech...designing ads, writing materials, journal articles...etc.. Writing has always been an important part of my life - so this seems like a natural fit..Ironically, when I was in HS I had entertained thoughts of becoming a journalist but went the scientific path instead. I have over 14 years in the field plus two degrees. BUT..after filling out the damn app the first time - their system crashes (OK...Merc retro anyone? Noooooo) Then I fill it out the second time and just list 7 years of job experience. Most company HR departments HATE long applications. LOL....little did I know that the Univ HR dept disqualified me based on "NOT ENOUGH EXPERIENCE" Being the trooper that I am.. I updated the resume, included a total of 11 years of experience and reapplied...NOOOO...they sent a message "YOU CANNOT APPLY MORE THAN ONCE FOR THE SAME JOB" I am Soooooooo frustrated. I put an e-mail into the HR department and I have my fiance printing out my packet (my printer was destroyed in the move). I'll send the packet into the contact name provided to me who actually oversees the department. I'll keep ya updated....

One of my first design jobs I applied for, wanted you to send a resume and ZEROX's of you artwork!!! ZEROX's!!! "Hi, My name is Mary, I can only design in black and white, I just spent $300.000 on an education, so you could look at crappy Zerox's of color work!" I finally did get the interview, but the ass had the nerve to say it didn't look like I did the work. (I was very nervous and uptight) My work looked like something Jackson Pollick did. So I had a two week trial probation period to prove it was my portfolio. How insulting, especially since the two jobs I had before that one were for The Musaeum of Art, and the Museum of Natural History in Phila. Well, got the job, but not before a crash course in providing an accurate personality via. computer, and phone. I felt like telling the guy to go look at the billboard I did, It's next to the Phila. Art Museum, you know the one where they hang color art! On another track, I wish I had stayed in the field long enough to catch today's action designing skateboards! There is some cool board designs out there. Good luck, be assertive if you want the job. Most of the jobs I applied for I got because I nagged them to death, and made them think it was the only job for me, even if it wasn't. It didn't work on CBS though. I had 5 interviews with them! Turns out they decided to go animated, which I didn't have experience in. Would have been a real ego booster! Oh, well enough about meeee. We have to get toget together some time. Did you find Hastings? And the incense? Mary P.S. Are you a graphic designer as well as a writer?IP: Logged |

Aw Pid How frustrating! Hopefully they'll understand the situation. HR people are usually pretty good at thinking outside the box... it's pretty much part of their job description.Definitely keep us posted. Much love IP: Logged |

Well...how is this for bizarre?First my application gets dumped..then rejected. So I sent an e-mail to HR to which I received a response of: 'You are not qualified because you do not have a BS in English, Journalism or Editing OR 8 years of experience in working in English, Journalism or Editing" Hmmm.... how odd, because the qualifications really listed a strong Biotech / Scientific background with at least some strong English, writing or journalism skills all totaling 8 years. Then I e-mailed back and said I must have misunderstood (see, it is much easier for a Science person with a writing background to write about science than a Journalism person without Science to write about Science). They e-mailed back "Sorry for our earlier e-mail. We reviewed your qualifications and the employment advisor has decided to forward your application / resume to the head of the department for review!!!! I will keep you all POSTED!!!
