Hurricane Dennis slammed ashore on the northern Gulf coast of Florida Sunday afternoon, uprooting trees and downing power lines with top sustained winds of 120 mph. The Category 4 storm lost power as it moved inland and, as of 5:00 pm local time, was downgraded to a Category 2 hurricane with wind speeds up to 105 mph. Forecasters caution that extremely heavy rains from Dennis will cause extensive flooding for the next several daysIP: Logged |

Just before Hurricane Charlie hit this area in 2004, my wife Betty found this on the beach. We forgot about it in the aftermath of the storm, so it sat in a bag in a cabinet. We live in an area that caught the full impact of the storm and many homes in the immediate area were damaged severely or destroyed. Ours had very little damage in comparison. Recently we had a occasion to clean out the cabinet and time to really look at what she had found. It seems to be a bone structure of some type animal/fish. It has not been altered in any way. It really looks awesome in person.I wonder if this was the reason we fared so well through the storm. I won't use the word miracle but we were more then lucky. --Larry L. Port Charlotte, Fl. speedy@lafayetteradio.com Update: A number of people have written in to identify the object as the dried skullbone of the Gafftop sailcat catfish IP: Logged |

Twister in Manitoba Southern Manitoba including Winnipeg city, have experienced rains of biblical proportions so far this year. That to go along with a very wet 2004, has led to unprecedented over-land flooding in the region. Rivers & creeks are at all time highs for this time of year. Lake Winnipeg is at record high levels because of all the rain, which all rivers drain into. If it were not for the huge floodway diversion that was built to protect Winnipeg in the mid-60's and is now being expanded, Winnipeg would be under several feet of water right now causing billions of dollars in damage. We usually get about a half dozen twisters or small tornadoes forming all summer in our region. We have had more than that number already, causing some serious damage to some of our rural towns. This picture was taken from the front porch of a home in Landmark, Manitoba in early July, 2005 by my friend's sister-in-law, Sandy. It was quite a harrowing experience for their family. While it moved along the country side and lasted quite a while, no serious damage was done by this twister. --Ted A.

James Doohan, best known for playing the engineer "Scotty" on the original Star Trek series, passed away today at the age of 85. Reportedly, Doohan has requested that his ashes be sent into space. The phrase "Beam me up, Scotty," referring to the transporter, will live on in the pop culture lexicon.First hour guest, Star Trek consultant Richard Arnold discussed the series and the death of James Doohan. Doohan, he said, greatly enjoyed participating in the Star Trek conventions and took pride in the fact that a number of people told him they had gone into engineering because they were inspired by his character.
